Chapter 50 Kidnapping
Chapter 50 Kidnapping
Kidnapping
"The ice cream truck has seventeen different flavor combinations," Marcus announced happily as they walked through the small park near their safe house, his voice carrying the excitement he always showed when encountering new patterns to analyze. "The mathematical probability of achieving optimal flavor distribution across multiple customers requires fascinating logistical considerations."
Sophia smiled at her brother's enthusiasm, feeling lighter than she had in months. Three days of freedom from the mansion had worked wonders for her and she wanted Marcus to feel it as well. Marcus's anxiety had decreased significantly without the oppressive atmosphere of the Rossi estate, and Sophia felt like she was rediscovering who she used to be.
"Maybe we should get some ice cream then," she suggested, watching Marcus's face light up at the prospect. "You could help them optimize their distribution strategy."
It had been Ethan's idea for them to take this walk. Marcus needed fresh air and normal experiences, he'd said, and Sophia needed to remember what it felt like to move freely through the world. The park was public enough to be safe but small enough that his security team could monitor them from a distance.
Sophia glanced around and spotted two of Ethan's men positioned strategically near the playground, trying to look casual while maintaining visual contact. It should have made her feel secure, but something about their body language seemed tense, alert in a way that made her uneasy.
"Sophia," Marcus said suddenly, his voice taking on the worried tone that meant he'd noticed something wrong. "The pattern of surveillance has changed. Your protection detail is displaying stress indicators."
Before she could ask what he meant, a van pulled up to the curb directly beside them. The side door slid open, and three men in dark clothing emerged with military precision.
"Run," Sophia said to Marcus, but it was already too late.
One of the men grabbed her arm while another blocked Marcus's path. The third man was speaking rapidly into a radio, coordinating with someone she couldn't see.
"Don't make this difficult," the man holding her said quietly, his voice professional and calm. "We don't want to hurt anyone, but we will if we have to."
"Let her go!" Marcus's voice cracked with distress as he tried to reach his sister. "Unauthorized contact protocols! Stranger danger procedures! Help, help, help!"
His shouts drew attention from other park visitors, but Sophia could see more men emerging from positions she hadn't noticed before. This wasn't a random crime… it was a coordinated operation with backup plans and contingencies.
"Please," Sophia said desperately, struggling against the man's grip. "Don't hurt my brother. He's not part of whatever this is about. He's just…"
"We're not here for your brother," the man replied, already pushing her toward the van. "Just you, Mrs. Rossi."
The use of her married name sent ice through her veins. This wasn't random at all. Someone knew exactly who she was, her value to Ethan, and had planned this kidnapping with surgical precision.
As they forced her into the van, Sophia caught sight of Ethan's security team finally mobilizing, but they were too far away and outnumbered. Gunfire erupted behind them as the van pulled away from the curb, but she couldn't tell if anyone had been hit.
"Marcus!" she screamed through the van's rear window, seeing her brother standing frozen in the middle of the park, his hands over his ears as he tried to process the chaos around him.
"He'll be fine," one of her captors said with professional indifference. "Our business is with you, not with him."
The van sped through the city streets with practiced efficiency, taking turns that seemed random but were clearly planned to avoid main roads and traffic cameras. Sophia tried to memorize their route, but the windows were tinted too dark to see landmarks clearly.
"Who are you?" she asked, though she suspected she already knew the answer. "What do you want from me?"
"We're people who understand the value of leverage," the man beside her replied. "And you, Mrs. Rossi, are very valuable leverage indeed."

Twenty minutes later, back at the safe house, Ethan's phone rang with the call that would change everything. He answered it expecting an update from his security team, but Marcus's panicked voice on the other end made his blood freeze.
"They took her, they took her, they took Sophia!" Marcus was sobbing, his words barely coherent through his distress. "Men with guns and coordination protocols! Pattern recognition failure! I couldn't protect her!"
The phone slipped from Ethan's hands as the full implications hit him. Sophia was gone. Taken by professionals who knew exactly who she was and what she meant to him. In three days of peaceful domesticity, he'd let his guard down, had allowed himself to believe they could build a normal life together.
And now she was paying the price for his moment of weakness.
"Get me everything," he said to Tony, who had arrived within minutes of Marcus's call. "Traffic cameras, cell phone data, witness statements. I want to know who took her and where they went."
"Boss, we're going to need resources for this kind of operation," Tony replied carefully. "The kind of resources we don't have access to anymore."
The truth hit Ethan like a physical blow. As long as he'd been part of the Rossi family, he'd had unlimited access to information networks, surveillance systems, and tracking capabilities that could find anyone anywhere. But he'd walked away from all of that when he'd chosen Sophia over his birthright.
Now, when he needed those resources most desperately, they were beyond his reach.
"There is one option," Tony said quietly. "Your father's offer is probably still open. If you went back, if you made peace with the family…"
"No." The word came out sharper than Ethan intended. "I won't crawl back to Diego and beg for help. I won't give him the satisfaction of seeing me broken."
"Then how do we find her?" Tony asked. "Because whoever took her knew exactly what they were doing. This was planned, coordinated, professional. These aren't street criminals we can shake down for information."
Ethan stared at his phone, where Marcus was still crying and trying to explain what had happened in his precise, analytical way. His brother-in-law was traumatized but unharmed, which meant the kidnappers had been surgical in their approach. They'd taken exactly who they wanted and left the rest.
Which meant they knew Sophia's value to him better than he'd realized.
"Boss?" Tony prompted. "What are your orders?"
Ethan closed his eyes and tried to think past the rage and terror clouding his judgment. Every instinct he possessed was screaming at him to burn the city down until he found her, to use every violent method at his disposal to get her back. But violence without direction was useless, and direction required information he no longer had access to.
Unless he swallowed his pride and went back to the one place he'd sworn never to return.
"Call the mansion," he said finally, the words tasting like poison in his mouth. "Tell my father I need to see him. Tell him it's about Sophia."
"Sir, are you sure…"
"Call him," Ethan repeated, his voice carrying the kind of finality that ended arguments. "Tell him his son is coming home."
As Tony made the call, Ethan stared out the window at the park where Sophia had been taken, where his moment of happiness had been shattered by forces he should have anticipated. He'd thought love made him stronger, had believed that choosing her over family duty was a victory.
Now he realized it had just made him a target.
And somewhere in the city, the woman he loved was paying the price for his mistakes, trapped by enemies who saw her as nothing more than a tool to use against him.
He would get her back, no matter what it cost him. Even if it meant giving up everything he'd gained by leaving the family… if it meant becoming the monster he'd been trying so hard not to be.
