Chapter 33 Morning After

Chapter 33 Morning After
Morning After

"You need to get dressed and return to your suite," Ethan's voice cut through the morning quiet like ice, cold and distant in a way that made Sophia's heart clench with immediate dread.

She stirred awake on the leather couch, disoriented for a moment before the events of the night before came rushing back. The confrontation about surveillance, the passionate argument that had led to something deeper, the way they'd finally given in to the desire that had been building between them for weeks.

But the man standing across the room adjusting his tie bore no resemblance to the vulnerable person who had held her so tenderly just hours before. This was Ethan Rossi the crime lord, cold and controlled and utterly untouchable.

"Ethan?" she said softly, sitting up and clutching his dress shirt more tightly around herself. Her voice was still rough with sleep, her hair tousled from their night together. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing is wrong," he replied without looking at her, his tone clipped and businesslike. "Last night was a mistake. One that won't be repeated."

The words hit her like physical blows. Sophia felt heat flood her cheeks, shame mixing with confusion as she tried to process his complete reversal from the man who had whispered tender words against her skin in the darkness.

"A mistake?" she repeated, her voice barely above a whisper. "Is that what you call what happened between us?"

"I call it a moment of poor judgment brought on by heightened emotions and proximity," Ethan said, finally turning to face her. His dark eyes were shuttered, revealing nothing of what he might be feeling. "It won't happen again."

Sophia stared at him, searching his face for any sign of the vulnerability he'd shown her the night before, any hint of the connection she'd thought they'd shared. But there was nothing… just cold indifference that made her feel exposed and foolish.

"So that's it?" she asked, fighting to keep her voice steady despite the humiliation burning in her chest. "We finally admit our feelings for each other, we make love, and now you're dismissing it as poor judgment?"

"We had sex," Ethan corrected harshly, his words deliberately cruel. "Let's not romanticize what was essentially a physical release between two people living in close proximity."

The clinical way he described their intimate encounter made Sophia feel sick. She could still feel the phantom touch of his hands on her skin, still hear the way he'd whispered her name like a prayer in the darkness. Had all of that been meaningless to him?

"You're lying," she said, standing up despite feeling exposed in nothing but his shirt. "You felt something last night. I know you did. This coldness, this distance… it's not real."

"Isn't it?" Ethan's smile was sharp and mocking. "Perhaps you've forgotten who I am, Sophia. I'm Ethan Rossi. I don't do feelings. I don't do emotional attachments. I certainly don't fall in love with women I married for convenience."

Each word was carefully chosen to wound, and they found their mark with devastating accuracy. Sophia felt tears burning behind her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. She wouldn't give him the satisfaction of seeing how deeply his cruelty cut.

"Then why did you marry me?" she asked desperately. "If I mean nothing to you, if last night meant nothing, why choose me specifically?"

"Because you were convenient," he said with brutal honesty. "Because you needed something I could provide, which made you easily controlled. Because you were naive enough to believe this arrangement could become something real."

The words were like knives, each one designed to destroy whatever foolish hopes she'd harbored about their relationship. Sophia wrapped her arms around herself, feeling more naked and vulnerable than she ever had in her life.

"I see," she said quietly, though she could hear her voice trembling despite her efforts to stay composed. "So last night was what… entertainment? A way to pass the time while you recover from your injuries?"

Something flickered in Ethan's eyes at her words, but it was gone so quickly she might have imagined it. When he spoke again, his voice was deadly calm.

"Last night was a reminder that you're still just a woman with physical needs, despite all your moral superiority. You wanted to feel desired, to feel important, and I provided that service. Don't read more into it than that."

The casual cruelty of his dismissal made Sophia's hands shake with rage and humiliation. This was worse than his threats, worse than his control, worse than being treated like property. This was being made to feel worthless after giving him something precious.

"Get out," she said, her voice growing stronger as anger began to overpower shame. "Get out while I get dressed, and then stay away from me."

"Gladly," Ethan replied, already moving toward the door. "Agatha will bring you breakfast in your suite. I suggest you eat it there…I have business to attend to today and don't need distractions."

Distractions. That's what she was to him now… not a wife, not even a woman he'd made love to, but a distraction to be managed and avoided.

After he left, Sophia sank back onto the couch and let the tears she'd been holding back finally fall. Her body still ached in places that reminded her of their passion, still carried his scent on her skin, but his words had poisoned every tender memory.

She'd been such a fool. To think that one night of intimacy could change the fundamental nature of their relationship, could somehow transform a man who saw love as weakness into someone capable of genuine feeling.

But even as she told herself she'd been naive, something didn't feel right about his behavior. The man who had held her so carefully, who had looked at her with such intensity, who had admitted his fears about trust…that man couldn't have disappeared completely overnight.

Unless he was choosing to hide behind cruelty to protect himself from whatever he was really feeling.

As Sophia gathered her scattered clothes and prepared to make the walk of shame back to her suite, she found herself remembering Diego's late-night presence the evening before. She'd been barely conscious, but she had a vague memory of voices in the hallway, of tension that seemed to fill the air even through her sleepy haze.

Had Diego confronted Ethan about what he'd seen? Had the family patriarch reminded his son about the dangers of emotional attachment, about the weakness that love represented in their world?

The more she thought about it, the more convinced she became that Ethan's cold behavior wasn't entirely genuine. It was too complete, too deliberately hurtful, too much of a performance designed to push her away.

But knowing that his cruelty might be partly performative didn't make it hurt any less. He had still chosen to wound her rather than fight for what they'd shared. He had still decided that protecting himself was more important than protecting what had been growing between them.

As she slipped out of his study and made her way through the mansion's quiet corridors, Sophia felt the weight of her situation settling back onto her shoulders. She was still trapped in this marriage, still dependent on Ethan's goodwill for her safety and Marcus's care, still bound to a man who saw emotional connection as a liability to be eliminated.

But something fundamental had changed in her during the night they'd shared. She'd glimpsed the man beneath the monster, had felt genuine connection with someone she was beginning to love despite every rational reason not to.

And now she had to decide whether to fight for that connection or accept Ethan's dismissal and retreat into the safe distance of their original arrangement.

The problem was, she wasn't sure her heart would let her choose safety over the possibility of something real, even if that possibility was wrapped in pain and disappointment and the constant threat of being hurt again.

Standing outside her suite with her dress clutched in her hands and shame burning in her cheeks, Sophia realized that the morning after had brought clarity she wasn't sure she wanted.

She was in love with Ethan Rossi, completely and hopelessly and despite his cruelty.

And that love was going to destroy her unless she found a way to protect herself from the man who had just proven he would use her feelings against her whenever it suited his purposes.
