Chapter 32 Diego's Warning

Chapter 32 Diego's Warning
Diego's Warning

The soft click of the study door opening pierced through the quiet darkness. Ethan's eyes snapped open instantly, his body automatically tensing into alertness despite the warm weight of Sophia sleeping against his chest. Years of living in a world where relaxation could mean death had trained him to wake at the slightest unusual sound.

Diego Rossi stood silhouetted in the doorway, his tall frame casting a shadow across the floor. Even in the dim light filtering in from the hallway, Ethan could see the shock and surprise that flickered across his father's features as he took in the scene before him.

Sophia lay curled against Ethan's side on the leather couch, her dark hair spilling across his bare chest, wearing only his dress shirt that had been hastily pulled over her after their passionate encounter. Her face was peaceful in sleep, more relaxed than he'd seen her since their wedding. Scattered across the floor were the remnants of their confrontation turned intimate… her dress, his pants, papers that had been swept off his desk in their urgency to be close to each other.

Ethan's jaw tightened as he met his father's stare. There was no hiding what had happened here, no way to pretend this was anything other than what it obviously was… a husband and wife who had finally given in to the desire that had been building between them for weeks.

Moving with careful precision so as not to wake Sophia, Ethan reached for the throw blanket draped over the back of the couch and gently covered her more fully. She stirred slightly at the movement, making a soft sound of contentment, but didn't wake. For a moment, watching her peaceful expression, Ethan felt something he hadn't experienced in years… complete calm.

Then reality crashed back in as Diego's presence reminded him that their private moment was no longer private.

Slowly, carefully, Ethan extracted himself from beneath Sophia, his movements deliberate and gentle. She murmured something unintelligible and curled deeper into the couch cushions, pulling his shirt more tightly around herself like a security blanket. The sight sent an unexpected wave of tenderness through him, followed immediately by a protective instinct so fierce it surprised him.

Diego continued to watch in silence as Ethan retrieved his scattered clothing and dressed quickly. The older man's expression was unreadable, but tension radiated from his still figure in waves. This conversation… and it would be a conversation… was going to be difficult.

Once dressed, Ethan moved toward the door where his father waited. He paused beside the couch, looking down at Sophia's sleeping form one more time. In the soft light, she looked younger, vulnerable in a way that made his chest tight with emotions he wasn't ready to name.

He stepped into the hallway and carefully closed the study door behind him, ensuring the soft click wouldn't disturb her rest. Only then did he turn to face Diego, squaring his shoulders for the confrontation he knew was coming.

"What is the meaning of what I just saw?" Diego's voice was low but sharp with disapproval, his dark eyes boring into his son with laser intensity.

Ethan met his father's gaze without flinching, his own voice steady and sure. "You saw a husband and wife sleeping together. Nothing more, nothing less."

"Don't be flippant with me, Ethan." Diego's jaw tightened, and even in the dim hallway lighting, the muscle jumping beneath his skin was visible. "This was supposed to be a business arrangement. A strategic marriage to secure your inheritance and strengthen the family's position. What I just witnessed looked like something else entirely."

"Maybe it is something else." The words came out with more conviction than Ethan had expected, surprising them both. "Maybe it's become something real."

Diego's expression hardened, his features settling into the cold mask of authority that had intimidated enemies and allies alike for decades. "Real?" he repeated, the word dripping with disdain. "Real feelings, real emotions, real attachment? Those are luxuries we cannot afford in this business, son."

"Are they?" Ethan crossed his arms over his chest, a defensive gesture that felt necessary in the face of his father's disapproval. "Or are they what make us human instead of monsters?"

"They are what make us weak," Diego said flatly. "They are what make us vulnerable to our enemies. They are what make us make poor decisions based on emotion instead of strategy." He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "If you get too emotional towards that girl, you will end up losing everything. Everything we have built, everything we have sacrificed for, everything your mother died protecting."

The mention of his mother sent a spike of anger through Ethan's chest. His hands clenched into fists at his sides as he stared at his father, seeing not the powerful patriarch but the man who had chosen duty over love time and time again.

"Is that what you tell yourself about mom?" Ethan's voice was quiet but filled with years of suppressed resentment. "That she died protecting the business? Because from where I stood, she died from the stress of living in a loveless marriage with a man who saw her as nothing more than a beautiful ornament for family functions."

Diego's eyes flashed with warning. "Watch yourself, boy. You're walking into dangerous territory."

"Am I?" Ethan took a step closer, matching his father's intensity with his own. "Because I think I'm finally walking into honest territory. Mom withered away in this house, watching you conduct business while she pretended to be the perfect mafia wife. And Isabella's mother… she couldn't even pretend. She left you because you gave her money and status but never gave her yourself."

"They understood their roles…"

"They understood that they married a man incapable of love," Ethan interrupted, his voice growing stronger with each word. "That's why mom died without ever feeling truly cherished by her husband. That's why Isabella's mother left you as well. Because living with someone who treats love like a liability is slowly killing."

The silence that followed was deafening. Diego's face had gone pale, then flushed with rage as Ethan's words hit their mark. For a moment, father and son stared at each other across a gulf of unspoken truths and buried resentments.

Then Diego's hand moved.

The slap echoed through the hallway like a gunshot, the sound sharp and final. Ethan's head snapped to the side from the force of the blow, his cheek immediately beginning to burn where his father's palm had connected. The taste of blood bloomed in his mouth where his teeth had cut the inside of his lip.

For a moment, neither man moved. The sound of the slap seemed to hang in the air between them, marking a line that had been crossed and couldn't be uncrossed. Years of tension and disagreement had finally erupted into violence, patriarch asserting dominance over heir in the most primitive way possible.

Inside the study, Sophia slept peacefully, undisturbed by the confrontation happening just beyond the door. Her face remained serene, her breathing deep and even, as if the walls themselves were protecting her from the family drama unfolding in the hallway.

For the first time since entering the Rossi mansion, she was sleeping without fear, without the constant tension that had plagued her nights since their wedding. Wrapped in Ethan's shirt, surrounded by the lingering scent of their passion and the security of his presence even in sleep, she had found a moment of genuine peace.

She had no idea that outside the door, the two most important men in her new life were drawing battle lines that could destroy everything she was just beginning to hope for.
