Chapter 66 Who Said I Was Abandoning You?
Chapter 66 Who Said I Was Abandoning You?
Elena Pov
When I said I didn’t want Lilith gone, I had expected Marcus to disagree, but I was also ready to convince him. However, his reaction had left me speechless.
Marcus had scolded me for being weak and not ruthless enough. But at the same time, he hadn’t said more, and I thought everything had ended after the Dean had forced Lilith to apologize, not until I heard a cry of pain after walking out with Marcus.
My heart pounded.
From outside, I could hear cries of panic and the Dean calling and asking Lilith what was wrong with her and why she couldn’t stand up.
I tried to go back to check, but one cold glance from Marcus made me unable to move.
We were outside, and other students rushed past us, but some didn’t even dare look our way, which I could understand.
Behind me were loud cries and scrambling noises, but here, it was so quiet and normal, like the cries didn’t exist.
I sneaked a glance at Marcus, my toes curling in my shoes.
He stood straight with his hands in his pockets. His deep eyes stared straight into nothing, and his face was without any expression, but somehow, the aura around him just seemed to make one unable to breathe.
My lips pursed.
Was he in a bad mood? Should I… maybe I should thank him for coming, right?
My fingers twisted around the shirt I was still holding onto. My heart was beating so fast, but no matter how I tried to break the silence, the words just wouldn’t come.
Just then, when I thought the silence would remain the same, Marcus suddenly spoke.
“Let’s go.”
Startled, I looked up only to see him leading the two alphas away.
My eyes widened and panic flashed in them.
What’s going on? D-did he just leave without even waiting for me or speaking?
For one heartbeat, I stayed rooted to the ground, my fingers curling helplessly at my sides. Then fear won over pride, and I ran after him.
“Marcus!”
I called out loudly.
I could feel some students cast their glances on me, but I didn’t care. All I knew was that I just wanted to stop him from leaving.
I ran after Marcus, my eyes red from tears, and only when he was almost at his car did I reach him and, without any thought, grab onto his robe.
“Marcus… You—”
Marcus paused but didn’t turn to look at me. The air around us stirred, and so did my heart. My hand trembled against the fabric. I almost let go before he even looked at me.
Slowly, he looked down, and I also followed his eyes, but when I saw his robe that I had grabbed, my face flushed red and I immediately released it.
I rubbed my fingers and sneaked another glance at him, but as if he didn’t care, he shifted his gaze back to the front and continued walking to the car.
My eyes quivered as I watched him leave. Just then, I spoke.
“Are you abandoning me again?!”
My heart shook immediately after I said so. I tried to take back my words, but it seemed it was already too late.
Marcus, who was about to reach his car, stopped.
The air turned silent, and I held my breath, my heart pounding as I watched him carefully.
Just then, he turned slightly and narrowed his dark eyes at me.
My heart skipped. I breathed heavily and immediately looked away to avoid his eyes. But Marcus didn’t look away.
The longer he stared, the harder it became to breathe, as though the whole world had gone silent around us.
My brain turned dazed as I felt his eyes trail over my body. From my toes, which were curling in my shoes, up to my neck, and finally to my face.
I didn’t look up, but every place he set his eyes on seemed to burn. I felt the urge to run away, but somehow, I couldn’t.
I gulped and inhaled shaky breaths.
Just then, I heard a cold snort.
Stunned, I looked up, my eyes widening in surprise and confusion.
Marcus’s lips pursed into a cold smile. His eyes glared at me, and for a moment, I thought he would say something hurtful, but he simply turned around and his calm voice reached me.
“Who said I was abandoning you?”
My heart skipped.
The words echoed in my mind long after he said them, making it impossible to think of anything else.
What?!
My eyes widened as I looked at Marcus, who entered the car in a daze. I still hadn’t come back to my senses when I felt his cold eyes on me.
He sat in the car, then said in his usual cold tone, “Get in the car.”
My heart tightened. I bit my lip and glanced at him once before silently walking toward him and climbing into the car.
The ride was quiet.
I sat stiffly in the back seat, my fingers twisting the stained black shirt on my lap until the fabric wrinkled under my grip.
No one spoke, and this made me even more conscious of the person sitting beside me. His eyes were closed, and he had one arm resting against the door.
I couldn’t help but sneak another glance at him, my eyes going into a daze as I looked at his calm face.
Even with his eyes closed, he seemed distant, like someone no one dared disturb.
Even the two people at the front, especially the female whom I didn’t know, kept their mouths shut and simply focused on the road.
I opened my lips once, then closed them again.
After everything that had happened yesterday, I still couldn’t believe he had come.
I let out a breath, then silently inhaled another, my fingers tightening at the mint scent that belonged to him.
Moments later, the car finally stopped in front of a private hospital. Though surprised that I was brought here, I still followed behind Marcus without saying a word.
Just then, I watched doctors hurry over with nervous smiles, their backs bent in a respectful manner.
I frowned, still confused.
“Alpha Marcus!” they echoed in greeting, then kept looking at him as if searching for any injury.
Marcus maintained his cold face.
The doctors waited nervously for his next word, while I stood there completely confused.
Just then, his jaw tightened, then he pointed his chin at me.
“Follow them. Treat your injuries.”
My eyes widened again.
Unconsciously, I raised my hand to touch my face, but hissed when I touched a spot on my cheek.
My face flushed.
I didn’t even know I had also sustained some scratches from the fight. I hadn’t felt anything until now.
I bit my lips, but I didn’t have time to think as the doctors quickly led me to the treatment room.
Soon, I was sitting in a room as a nurse helped treat my bruises.
The cold medicine brushed against my skin, and the sting made me flinch.
The nurse apologized softly, but I barely heard her as my thoughts were somewhere else. My heart was thumping heavily, and I just couldn’t wait to be done.
Immediately after she finished the treatment, before the nurse could say another word, I was already on my feet and heading for the door.
I rushed back into the hospital hallway, and just as I hoped, Marcus was waiting there.
He stood by the window with both hands in his pockets, looking outside. The sunlight fell across his dark robe, making his figure look even taller and more majestic.
I held my breath, as if afraid to disturb the peace. My steps slowed, and for some reason, walking toward him felt harder than fighting Lilith.
Just standing a few steps away from him made my fingers tighten and my heartbeat lose its rhythm.
I wanted him. I wanted him so badly, and I wanted him to notice me and also want me just as I did. But—
As if Marcus heard my footsteps, he turned his head slightly, and only then did I see the unlit cigarette stick between his lips.
His eyes swept over my face before dropping to the bandage on my arm.
“Done?”
I pursed my lips, then nodded.
“…Yes.”
Silence returned.
My stomach flipped. I really didn’t know what to say, so I lowered my head and stared at my shoes.
My fingers rubbed against each other before I finally forced the words out.
“Thank you… for today.”
He didn’t answer immediately, and for a moment, my heart clenched painfully.
Seconds passed. Then his deep voice sounded.
“You did well today.”
I looked up, startled. I searched his face, almost wondering if I had imagined hearing those words.
“What?”
His face was cold, but he still spoke seriously.
“If anyone bullies you, tear their faces apart. Be ruthless!”
I blinked.
“But, the school rules…”
I didn’t even finish before his sneer cut in. He looked at me as though the answer should have been obvious.
“So what?”
His expression didn’t change.
“Do whatever you want. I’ll deal with it.”
My heartbeat skipped.
Before I could even ask more questions, he had already turned away.
My eyes followed him, my face flushed and my lips curled into a shy smile but I quickly bit the inside of my cheek, trying to stop the smile from growing wider.
Doesn’t that mean… he still cares about me?
I bit my lips, but when I looked up, he had gone far, so I sped up and ran after him.
Outside, the black car we came in was already waiting.
He looked at one of the men, then ordered, “Take her back to college.”
My chest tightened.
“W-What about you?”
“I have work.”
The answer was short.
I hesitated.
There were still things I wanted to ask him. I had thought we would go home, but…
I really wanted to ask why he had come even after the fight. He could simply have sent someone. Why did he call me his little omega girl? And…
Had the cold war between us ended?
My fingers tightened around the shirt.
“Marcus…”
He paused.
For one tiny moment, I thought he would turn around, but he didn’t.
Without another word, he stepped into a different car followed by the man whom I had come to know was called Nexus and the lady.
The door closed.
For a second, I wanted to knock on the window and ask him not to leave, but my feet refused to move.
Moments later, it disappeared onto the road.
I stood there watching until I couldn’t see it anymore, and only then did I lower my head and quietly climb into the car waiting for me.
When the car stopped in front of the college, one of the guards opened the door for me.
I thanked him softly before stepping outside.
Before I could even react, the black car drove away.
I stayed where I was. Students walked past in the distance, laughing and talking, but none of it seemed to reach me.
The afternoon breeze brushed across my face, and without realizing it, I hugged myself and stared blankly at the empty road.
Everything that had happened since yesterday felt unreal.
The argument with Marcus. Then another with Lilith. Marcus arriving and protecting me. His words, and finally his cold back.
I blinked.
Why do I feel like this had gone back to the way it was when I first arrived at his mansion?
My heart sank.
I was so lost in thought that the world around me slowly faded away. Just then—
Tap.
A light touch landed on my shoulder.
I gasped, then spun around too quickly, but my foot slipped and the ground tilted beneath me.
“Ahh!”
I cried out, my hands stretching to grab onto anything, but thank goodness, before I could fall, a warm hand caught my arm and another steadied my waist.
“Hey, be careful.”
The unfamiliar voice carried a trace of concern.
Startled, I looked up.
For a brief second, our eyes met and…
I froze.
(This is a long chapter but I really can’t split it. Enjoy)
