Chapter 83
Golem POV.
Her request for a promise caught me off guard, and I found myself searching for the right words.
"I don't understand you, Isadora," I began. "Where is this coming from? What have I ever done to give you such an impression?"
She held her ground. "I love you, Golem, but how can I trust that you won't run away from me? If you can run away from your mother, then who am I?"
Hearing her say those words, I was taken aback by a whirlwind of surprise as I took a few steps backward, stunned by her response. The weight of her doubt hit me like a tidal wave, and for a moment, I felt lost in a sea of confusion.
"You just broke my heart, Isadora," I confessed. With that said, I walked towards the wardrobe,
Hearing her say those words, I was taken aback by a whirlwind of surprise. I took a few steps backward, struggling to find the right words. "You just broke my heart, Isadora," I finally uttered.
With that said, I walked towards the wardrobe, grabbing my clothes from where I kept them during the escapade of the previous night. Isadora got on her feet and approached me, intercepting my path as I walked towards the door. "You're not going to say anything? You just want to walk out on me like that?" she questioned.
I held her gaze, my face devoid of any smile. "What's there to say, Isadora? It's called the past for a reason."
"The past is a part of our lives we can't just ignore," she argued.
Gradually losing my patience, I raised my voice involuntarily. "Well, I've chosen to ignore mine."
I never liked bringing up issues of the past because I'd done a lot of things I wasn't proud of, and the guilt kept haunting me every single time it flashed in my memory. Isadora just didn't understand; I wouldn't blame her, though. She was clueless about this part of me, and we were still getting to know each other.
Her gaze softened, and her eyes twitched like she was about to shed a tear. "Don't raise your voice at me, Golem. I did nothing wrong. I only asked you to promise me you're not going to vanish from my life from one day to the next."
She already ruined my mood, and there was no turning back now. It wasn't her fault. Let's just say it was my own demons judging me over something I still hadn't forgiven myself for – running away from my mother as a child and leaving her alone without any company, only to return when she was dead. That was terrible.
"What is the point in a promise, Isadora?" I replied, holding her gaze. "You and I know that my words aren't enough to convince you, or is it?" I inquired
She responded, "It's not."
Impatiently, I retorted, "Then what do you want from me, woman?"
"I want you to sit on the throne and occupy your rightful position as the king of the South. That way, you officially have a home here beside me, and I can rest assured you won't suddenly vanish."
"Hell no!" I immediately responded without allowing her another second to complete her sentence. "How the hell do you expect me to be both king of dragons and king of the South at the same time?" I added.
She looked at me calculatingly, disappointment in her eyes. "My instincts are right, then. You only came back here for your mother's funeral, then you found me, and you don't still plan to stay. You only want to be here for a little while and then vanish, just like you did in the past."
Losing my patience for a bit, I retorted, "You keep bringing up the past with every little opportunity you get. What's your deal with the past, Isadora? Well, if you love the past so much, let's talk about your past instead."
She held my gaze with a sad glint in her eyes as she asked, "What about my past do you want to know?"
"For starters," I responded, "what transpired between you and Leonardis that made you both want to kill each other so much? And why did you keep referring to yourself as a whore?"
Isadora shook her head in disappointment. She walked towards the window and said, "Clearly, Golem, you are offended by the fact that I want you to have a life with me in the south. But it's fine; I'm not going to force you to do anything. If you don't want to build a life with me in the South, you can leave."
"Well, thank you, my lady. Next time, don't dish out what you can't take," I responded, and with that, I stormed out of her room.
Just as I walked out of the room, a wave of guilt and realization came over me, and I halted my steps. I realized that I messed up, and what I said was a completely stupid thing to say to someone I loved so much.
"Ah, fuck," I muttered, smashing my head into the nearby walls by the palace hallway creating holes.
Just then, one of the men walked past me and asked, "My King, is everything okay?"
"Get me a glass of whiskey. Oh, fuck it, just get me the whole bottle," I barked impatiently.
In less than a split second, he returned, handing me a bottle of the finest whiskey in the south. I took a massive gulp, smashing the bottle on the ground, and screamed at him, "What are you still staring at? Get out of here immediately."
I smashed my head into the walls one more time. Finally, having taken a moment to gather my thoughts, I returned to Isadora's room. She was now in a towel, about to get into the shower. I declared, "You're my weakness, Isadora, and for you, I'll sacrifice everything. Maybe it's time I embrace my destiny and stop fighting it ."
She eyed me calculatively, questioning, "What are you trying to say, Golem?"
"Fuck it, Isaa. I want to have everything with you—a life, a family. I don't mind spending the rest of my life trapped in a slow-paced life as king of the south. As long as you're beside me and my queen, that's all that matters."
Without wasting another second Isadora threw herself into me in a tight hug, attacking my lips with kisses
