Chapter 79 Hunt for the truth

Chapter 79 Hunt for the truth

Evelyn's POV.

“That's none of your business,” After a stretch of silence, I finally responded.

"What matters is that you shouldn't ruin my marriage.”

Nathaniel chuckled.

“I'm not trying to ruin your marriage,” he said. “Those photos were just a cover for what is in that drive exactly.”

I still didn't understand.

“In case you get caught with it, your husband will only get the idea that you just got,” he added.

“So, I still need to look through the drive again?” I asked, face turning slightly in surprise.

“If you want to,” he replied. “There's a locked folder, it has a four digit lock, think of a passcode.”

Silence reigned for a moment before the call ended from the other end of the call.

I looked at the flashdrive again in my hands. What the hell was kept inside here that it needed to be with a lock?

Not only a lock, it had memories of Nathaniel and I as a cover.

I headed back out of the room immediately, heading downstairs to Adrian's study.

The door opened just as I got to the stairs. “Welcome, Mr. Kane,” Mira greeted.

I hadn't heard the sound of his car stopping due to the call with Nathaniel or probably the fact that I was lost in thoughts.

I quickly turned back, not wanting Adrian Kane to see me. He's home early, the time should be around 5pm.

“Thank you, Mira,” he replied. His voice was getting closer.

I stayed glued to the wall, not able to bring my legs to walk.

I had suddenly become nervous with his presence because of his study which I had visited today.

He walked past me and the scent of his cologne filled the air while I dragged a deep breath in.

I walked after him, ensuring to keep a distance. Adrian stopped and I thought he had caught me following behind him.

I quickly hid. I expected him to come for me but he stood fixed on the spot.

I strained my ears and realized his phone was vibrating with a call. He picked it up.

“What's the issue?” He asked, his cold voice appealing to my ears.

“I'll come over there right now,” he added. He dropped the call and resumed walking.

I didn't follow him. First, I tried to put the pieces together then recalled Cassandra's messages.

'A possibility,' that was what I thought. There was a possibility that the call was from where he had kept that guy.

I walked to my room, making sure to hide the flashdrive well. In Adrian's home, there was no guarantee.

Someone could come in here and search. He could have planted some device somewhere once again.

Starting to lock my door because of the flashdrive would look suspicious, it would start to raise questions and it would lead to the room being searched through.

I peeped through the door. I could see Adrian's door from there. Adrian used the shower, for a few more minutes, he didn't come out. Suddenly, I heard the twitching sound of the doorknob.

I closed my door, hiding back inside the room. When Adrian walked past my door, I walked out.

Slowly I trailed behind him. “Should I serve your meal, sir?” Mira asked when he got downstairs.

Adrian replied curtly then he was out of the house. “Later,”

Mira stared at the door like it was his back. I let a few seconds pass before I descended the stairs, pretending not to know Adrian was back.

“Mr. Kane just got back from work not quite long, I thought I should tell you since you asked about him earlier,” Mira said.

I flashed her a smile. “Where's he? His room?”

“No,” she replied sharply. “He headed back outside just now.”

I nodded in understanding. “The doctor wants me to take walks, I'll do so now.”

I turned to leave but Mira's footsteps which dragged after me just once, made me stop. I turned to face her.

“I will go with you,” she said. “I don't want you collapsing while no one is there.”

Maybe if I was truly taking a walk then I would consider what she just said.

“Don't bother, Mira,” I smiled. “I want to do this alone, I got it.”

She sighed. She didn't push things further and just nodded.

I walked out of the house and there was no guard at the entrance. I looked around for where Adrian could have gone through.

There was no sign of Adrian going out through the main entrance. I searched for trails that could lead me to where he went and I found it.

The water under the bathroom fur slippers he was wearing. I traced it and it led me to the back of the house, to a small old looking building I hadn't known existed.

The door was slightly opened. I stood outside and peeped through.

A guy was tied to the floor, Adrian standing in front of him, David behind the guy.

I gasped, eyes blinking in disbelief. Cassandra was right, someone was being kept hostage in the mansion.

Adrian crouched down in front of him. “You tried to commit suicide?” He laughed.

“I see how hard you are trying to protect your master,” he added.

Again, I took a closer look at the floor. There was a substance that had been chewed, looking like it was forced out of someone's mouth.

“If you have something to protect,” the guy's voice rose weakly. “Then you will be willing to die to keep what you know to yourself.”

“You still won't tell me who that man behind you is?” Adrian's back straightened.

“Just kill me if you are not going to let me go,” The guy gritted.

I can't imagine how many days they've kept him here for, making him go through pain and torture just so he could speak the truth.

His whole face looked battered, his body weak. I could see through his soul, he was exhausted and tired of all these.

“Come in if you want to watch, wifey”, Adrian's voice cut through my thoughts.

My heart jumped. He didn't turn but he knew I was here!
