Chapter 78 A trip down memory lane
Evelyn's POV.
I didn't want to reply to Cassandra's message. She could be the one who had tried to kill me, she doesn't like me afterall. But I replied anyway.
“You are funny,” I typed back. “What makes you think I'll trust you again?”
“What are you scheming this time around? How are you going to frame me up again?”
She viewed the message immediately and typed back. “It's left to you to believe me.”
“If you don't, it's fine,” she typed. “Just know the person will still come for you.”
I stared at the screen and clenched my jaws. There was no harm in asking her who it was. If she's asking to meet, then I back out.
I typed back. “Tell me then. Who is it?”
“You almost got killed because of your husband, Adrian Kane,” her words made me frown.
It didn't sound impossible. There were a lot of people who might want that man dead because of his cold attitude and arrogant shoulders but I needed her to explain.
“I don't know who this person is,” she continued. “But he knows a lot about Adrian. He knows Adrian has a lot of secret he's willing to go to the end of the world to keep.”
“The man uses a burner phone and even Adrian can't decipher who he is,” she kept typing. “But the man who stabbed you should know,”
“And where is that man who stabbed me?” I typed quickly.
“I think he's in Adrian's custody. In the same mansion where you are living with him,” she said.
Cassandra used 'I think'.
It means she's also not sure of the information she's passing.
“Where did you hear this from?” I asked, wanting to verify her source.
“From Adrian. The guy is with him,” she replied.
“Why are you telling me this?” My hands typed fast on my phone, the keyboard clacking aggressively. “You are not the type to help people solve their problems.”
The next message Cassandra sent was “lol” and I imagined her laughing alone at the moment.
“I'm not trying to help you solve your problems.” she typed. “I'm also curious about who this person is.”
“You might have ways to find out, that's why I'm telling you.”
I read the message and didn't reply. I switched the screen of my phone off and dropped it on the bed.
Eva arrived minutes later, handing the bag over to me.
I checked through and heaved a sigh of relief. The flashdrive was still there and every other thing I had placed inside the bag.
Later in the evening, Mom left and Eva spent the night with me. Adrian didn't call but Nathaniel did, checking up on me.
Two days passed by in a blur. Mira kept visiting with meals and other things I needed. The doctor kept checking my stats, adding injections to my IV and administering other treatments.
It was evening and Mira was here like always. Today she didn't come with an evening meal, she came to see the doctor.
The doctor had scheduled my discharge and she had gone to her for the processings.
“I've sorted the paperwork out, ma'am,” Mira told me. “We can leave now, your discharge has been processed.”
I could stand well and my stomach hurt less now. We walked outside to the lobby of the hospital and the doctor appeared in front of me again.
“You should take walks frequently,” she said. “That way you will heal more faster.”
“Don't stress yourself out,” she continued. “And make sure you take the drugs I prescribed.”
I smiled widely at her even though it didn't reach my eyes. “Thank you, doctor.”
We resumed walking, finally making it out of the hospital. The outside air felt fresh on my skin, soothing and cold.
Eva headed back to our parents home after a goodbye that refused to end quickly. Edward helped with my things while Mira opened the car door.
The drive back to the mansion was filled with silence. Edward soon parked the car inside the compound, everyone stepping down.
I headed into the house, a short breeze welcoming me back into Adrian's home.
“Where's Adrian?” I turned back to face Mira who entered behind me.
“I don't think he's home, ma'am,” She said, "He had been quite busy for the past few days.”
I nodded and walked up the stairs, heading to my room.
I stayed on my phone for hours but then suddenly remembered the flash drive again. I needed to get a laptop to look through what's inside.
I walked out of the room, going back downstairs. I tiptoed, being cautious of Mira.
She was nowhere in sight and that made me breathe out in relief.
I headed to Adrian's study and opened the door gently. I moved over to his laptop without delay, turning it on.
I swiped it open, luckily, there was no lock. I quickly inserted the flashdrive, opening it up on the laptop.
There were different folders listed on the screen. I clicked the first one and I blinked at everything I saw.
They were photos of Nathaniel and I, memories we had packed in what seemed like a suitcase and forgotten.
Those were the happy moments of my life but now it's gone. That era is gone and it's never coming back.
I checked through some more folders, thinking something more important could be in them but all I saw was pictures I snapped together with Nathaniel.
I removed the flashdrive, emotions swirling inside of me. I didn't know if it was anger or regret.
I was torn between believing that he shouldn't have kept these and the regret of leaving him without knowing what happened to him.
I stood up from the chair, turning the laptop off. I walked out, leaving no traces, like I was never here.
I returned to my room and called Nathaniel. He picked up instantly.
“What are you trying to do?” I asked, annoyed. “Trying to bring back memories? Trying to return things to how they used to be?” I scoffed.
“I'm married, Nathaniel!” I gritted. “It can never happen.”
Nathaniel replied my words, his voice calm. “Let me ask you, Evie. Are you happy in that marriage?”
Silence took over me as I had no answer to that question.
Am I happy here?
