Chapter 70 Investigation 1
Adrian's POV.
I turned immediately but there was no one in sight. It was late and the hospital's dimmed light was all I could use to see.
I moved away from the car, trailing back to where the guy was headed.
Everywhere was dark. It was difficult to make out anything except for the flowers and trees.
I scoffed. How perfect was he to be able to get my phone out of my body with just a body bump.
After standing on a spot for a few minutes, I heard the distant ringing sound of my phone.
I traced it without delay. I found the phone but not the guy.
The phone was laying on a concrete block, Evelyn's father's number on the line.
I picked the phone up, not the call. I looked around, my eyes still searching for the guy.
I didn't see him and I didn't have the time to search for someone over an unsuccessful theft attempt.
I moved back to the car, the continuous call disrupting my thoughts and the peace of the silence around me.
I slid the green button, putting the phone to my ear.
“How is she?” He asked, voice panicked. “Tell me, how is my daughter?!”
His voice was raised and in the background, I could hear soft sobs of her mother and sister.
“She had surgery” I started, igniting the car. “It was successful”
“She's still unconscious. The doctor doesn't know when she will wake up” I added.
Whether the phone was snatched away from his ears, if the call was on speaker or if he gave it to the youngest daughter, I didn't know but her voice came next.
“Which hospital is it?” She asked, tears disturbing her voice. “l’ll come stay with her”
“My sister will need me!” She continued. “I'll go stay with her”
“Young lady, it's too late. Go see her tomorrow” I told her.
I wanted to hang up when her voice rose again. “Wait, you aren't with her?”
“She'll be fine” That was all I said before I hung up. I've had enough of their emotional drama.
I started the car, driving at the highest speed towards the hotel. I ignored traffic rules, it was late already, there were only a few cars on the road.
Soon, my car stopped in front of the hotel and I didn't bother finding a parking space.
I walked inside and the receptionist greeted me, one of the female attendants also stepping forward to greet me.
I ignored them and only moved towards the back patio where the party took place. The attendant followed behind me.
“Everyone left, sir,” she said.
I could also see it. Everywhere that boomed with music and people's voices was now filled with silence.
My eyes darted around until it landed on the stain of blood on the floor. Evelyn's blood.
“We were waiting for you before we cleaned up, sir,” she said. “Should we clean this place up?”
I didn't look at her before I talked. “Don't”
“This is a crime scene” I looked around once again. “It should be cleaned up only after the case is resolved”
“Then will the police be coming here sir?” She asked.
She asks too many questions and I was too disoriented to think of not answering, all I did was keep answering her.
“There will be no police involved” I stated clearly. “I will be the one to solve this case”
I turned to her sharply. “Until the case is resolved, the hotel will be closed down”
“But sir….” She attempted to object and I allowed her. “That's left for the owner to decide”
“You'll have to talk with our manager then go through legal processes—” her words were starting to bore me.
“I just said it loud and clear” I tucked my hands into my pocket. “This hotel will be closed down”
I looked into her eyes, awaiting a response. She gulped. “Yes sir”
“I need to see the cameras,” I told her, already walking ahead of her.
“We can do that tomorrow, sir,” she said. “It's late and the previous shift—” I turned to her sharply. The look on my face cut her off and made her shiver.
Menacingly, I took two steps back to her. “Nothing good will come out of defying me, young lady”
“If you don't want to regret going against me” I paused. “Just do as I say and I will be done with you real quick”
She swallowed. “Understood, sir”
She gestured towards the entrance that led outside the back patio. “This way, sir”
I walked after her but was forced to stop when someone emerged from the shadows.
“I'm with you on this,” he said. That was Nathaniel Quinn.
I snapped my face to him. I stared at him the same way I've always done, hatred and disgust.
“You won't ask me how she's doing?” I asked.
If any other person can't tell, I could tell he likes Evelyn. They were once in love. I wasn't sure about now but this man here still likes her and that itself pissed me off so much.
“You don't look like someone who's mourning a wife, so I can tell she's not dead,” he said. “For you to come back to the scene so soon, it means you want to find who did it before she wakes”
And right now, I hated how he could read me so perfectly well.
“Stay out of this,” I told him. “it's none of your business”
Nathaniel moved closer. “No, I'm working with you on this."
“I'm not letting you, I can't trust you,” I tilted my head. “You could even be the one who did that to her.”
Nathaniel scoffed, throwing his face to the side. “I love Evelyn.”
“I hate seeing the both of you together but I'll never hurt her, you should know that much.”
He moved even closer, our faces only a few inches apart. “So, let's find this asshole who hurt her together.”
My face lingered on Nathaniel. I didn't say a word but only stared blankly at him for minutes.
Finally, I spoke.
“Yes” I paused.
“Let's find that asshole together.”
