Chapter 49 Nate's Rescue
Evelyn's POV.
I've always had this thought that Cassandra and Adrian could still be together and it turned out to be true.
If they weren't, they wouldn't be standing in the balcony hallway, kissing each other.
I stormed away from the place, knowing there was nothing I could do. I didn't want to interrupt their special moment and I didn't want to see the sickening sight for a moment longer.
As I walked back into the main hall where the party was going on, a masked waiter appeared in front of me with a smile.
“Have bread, ma'am,” she said.
I took the bread from her with the rage of the sight I had just seen. I didn't even thank her and cut out a large bite into my mouth, munching angrily.
A few seconds later, I noticed something. Other maids were not masked, causing me to squint my gaze.
“Why was that waiter masked?”
Suddenly, my vision started going blurry, the world tilting in front of me.
I stared at the bread and processed how it came to me. A masked waiter while the rest were not masked.
Something was wrong with the bread and I didn't pay attention.
The bread fell off my hand, falling to the floor with a soft thud. I clutched my chest, struggling to breathe.
My chest hurt badly, my lungs struggling for oxygen. It suddenly felt like I forgot how to breathe.
People's voices became distant, their faces and body figures getting completely blurred out.
I fell to the floor with a loud thud, my eyes closing and opening at the same time.
That bread must have been poisoned, it was doing something weird to my body.
“Evie!!” Someone called, shaking my body on the ground. Even if I forget everyone's voices, I won't forget his.
It was Nathaniel.
I couldn't feel my body but I knew he picked me up.
I could see him through my hazy eyes moving through the midst of people and getting into a car afterwards.
“Hang on, Evie!” He said, breath shaky. “We will be there soon.”
My lips felt too heavy to speak and my eyes grew even more tired. I was going to stay awake for Nathaniel but darkness enveloped me before I could attempt to stop it.
When I opened my eyes again, I was on a hospital bed, the electronic medical device beeping slowly.
An IV was fixed on my hand and an oxygen mask was placed on my nose.
I looked around and observed everything before I moved my hand slowly, taking the oxygen mask off my nose.
“Evie,” Nate rushed to me. I hadn't noticed he was standing at the other end of the room until he called my name. “Are you okay? Does anywhere hurt anymore?”
I stared at him for a while, not able to give a response. He's my goddamn ex-boyfriend for goodness sake, how could he care this much?
I nodded slowly. I still feel weak but I was fine.
My face lifted up to the window and I saw that the day was just breaking.
“It's morning already?” I asked, blinking my eyes.
“Yes,” Nate responded. “You slept for seven hours.”
I looked around and surprisingly, I was looking for Adrian Kane.
“Where's my husband?” I asked.
Nate didn't reply immediately and with the look on his face, I could tell what it meant and that made a chuckle escape my lips.
I didn't fear what Nate would be saying. I expected it.
“He isn't here. I bet he didn't notice you were gone as he was having a nice time with his ex girlfriend,” Nate said.
So it's obvious I wasn't the only one who saw and recognized them.
I laughed. I bet he didn't even notice that I wasn't home after he returned home yesterday.
Almost immediately, the door to the hospital room swung open.
Slowly, my face moved to the door and I saw Adrian walk in.
He looked angry and his eyes landed on me before anything else.
Adrian took his face away from me almost immediately, confirming the fact that he's a legit asshole.
He moved over to Nate, punching him on the face. I gasped, not expecting what he had just done.
Adrian adjusted his tie and sighed heavily in relief.
“You must be crazy,” he snapped. “Who said you can take her?”
“What makes you think you are in control of her?” Adrian said breathlessly, his words spat with rage.
“What do you mean?” Nate snapped his face back to him, his own face also getting darkened.
“What makes you think you can touch her as you want? What makes you think you can take her anywhere you want?” Adrian's rage kept boiling, steaming like hot water.
I couldn't understand him at the moment. I couldn't understand the reason he was getting so worked up.
“So, while you were having fun with your ex, I should let her be when she collapsed?” Nate scoffed.
With lightning speed, Nate also moved closer to Adrian, landing a punch on his face. I gasped.
“And this is to tell you that you don't get to turn me into your punching bag just to let out your frustration.”
Adrian's jaws clenched. He moved closer to Nate again. I didn't know if he was just going to give him a warning or if he was going to try to beat him up again.
I stood up from the bed, removing the IV in a hurry.
“Stop!” I got into their midst. “Please stop!” I yelled.
“What do you both think you are doing right now?” I glared at them, yelling in anger.
Only then did I realize that I was still weak. The chest pain I had felt when I ate that bread started again and I collapsed.
I expected to fall to the floor but I fell into strong arms instead, though I didn't know who they belonged to.
