Chapter 26 The Price of Power
Evelyn's POV
It had been hours since I left the Denklings company. I returned to my room with Adrian's last words in mind.
I had ignored him earlier, but he managed to get to me
I felt guilty about Edward because I knew Adrian was surely going to punish him.
I sat on my bed, thinking about how I'd get the fashion house back from Denklings, but before I finished processing my thoughts, my phone rang.
I picked it up without hesitation even though it was an unknown number.
I waited for the person on the other end to speak and then his voice came through.
“Hello, is this Ms. Evelyn Kane, the first daughter of the Voss family?” he asked.
My face creased in confusion but I responded. “Yes, it is.”
“This is Denklings Group. I have been told to inform you that the fashion house belonging to Voss has been returned,” he said.
I jumped out of bed and stood still in the middle of the room. “What?” I exclaimed like I hadn't heard him right.
The man didn't repeat what he had said, instead, he continued with relaying his message.
“The CEO would like you to know that it was returned thanks to your husband who asked for it,” he said. “The rest of your staked assets have also been given back.”
“Thank you, ma'am. Enjoy the rest of your evening.” The call ended but I couldn't bring myself to take the phone off my ears.
Adrian Kane. He gave the fashion house back to us. He helped me but I didn't want him to.
Another call jolted me out of my thoughts and when I checked, it was Eva.
I picked it up without hesitation but my face was expressionless. I couldn't wrap my head around why Adrian did it, after asking me not to crawl back to him for help.
“Evelyn!” Eva yelled and from the way her voice sounded, I could tell she was elated at the moment.
“Hey, Eva,” I replied, trying to give the same energy but it felt impossible.
“They returned the fashion house!” She screamed with joy. “They returned everything!”
A small smile appeared on my face. It was a good thing, worth celebrating but not when the person who helped us get it back was Adrian Kane.
He thinks he's the only one with powers and because of that he thinks he can walk over anyone on this entire fucking planet.
I wanted to prove him wrong and tell him he's nothing.
“I'm glad, Eva,” I smiled. “Congratulations to us.”
“You are not fine, Evelyn,” Eva said in a hushed tone
“What do you mean?” I asked and forced myself to chuckle.
“Something's wrong. What's it? Do you want to tell me?” She spoke too quickly.
I smiled widely. Even though she couldn't see it, I knew she'd feel it.
“Everything is fine, Eva,” I said. “You worry too much”
“Regards to Mom and Dad. Make sure to scold Dad and warn him never to gamble with everything we own again,” I said.
She giggled and I imagined her nodding her head as she did that. “Okay, sister.”
I ended the call and took a deep breath.
Adrian. Do we owe him now?
I walked downstairs in a hurry. I was going to wait for him in the living room until he got back from work.
Luckily, as I stepped down the stairs, he entered the living room.
He looked at me and raised a brow. Before he could speak, my enraged voice rose.
“Why did you do it?” I asked, fuming in anger. “I told you I wouldn't need your help! I said I'd be handling this myself, so why the fuck did you help?”
“Help?” He scoffed. “I didn't help you. You never asked for it.”
His words made my forehead crease. What does he mean?
“I only showed you who calls the game.” He smirked. “The fact is, I rule your entire life.”
I clenched my jaws, my eyes burning with anger. “You are so fucked up, Adrian!” I spat.
“You think you've got everyone wrapped around your fingers?” A scoff escaped my lips. “That's where you got it wrong! You can never have me wrapped!”
“We'll see,” he said with a stern look and walked past me, heading to the stairs.
I turned back to look at him immediately but I couldn't even stop him. All I did was watch his back as he walked.
I wanted to vent my anger but even that was difficult to do.
Mira chose that moment to appear before me. “Ma'am, should I serve your dinner?” She asked, bowing slightly.
I glanced at her sternly, my forehead still creased. “No,” I rolled my eyes.
I stormed back to my room and tried staying on my phone but every damned thing pissed me off. The only thing that didn't was sleep.
It felt like I had been gone for a long period of time after I slept but I was surprised to check the time when I woke up to see it was just minutes past 2am.
I slept for only four hours. I stood up from the bed and walked downstairs to get a bottle of water.
When I walked downstairs, I saw that Adrian had passed out on the sofa.
He leaned back against the chair and his eyes were closed, a pen in his hand.
On the center table was his laptop with the screen still on and some documents placed beside it.
I stood frozen for a few minutes and all I did was watch him.
I moved closer, being careful not to wake him. I glanced through the papers and could see he was working overnight.
I crouched down in front of the table subconsciously, my hands resting on my knees and my chin resting on them.
Adrian looked innocent.
Perfectly sculpted jaw. Heart shaped lips that looked really soft . Lashes too long to belong to a man like him.
For one terrifying second, I forgot everything he had done. I could use a kiss from those lips. Maybe I'll feel better.
I stood up abruptly.
