Chapter 20 Can you keep a secret?

Chapter 20 Can you keep a secret?

Evelyn's POV.

I laughed loudly - the room went silent and everyone turned to me.

“Is my husband that much of a popular person? Everyone is being too curious about him,” I said nervously.

Cecelia laughed. “Of course, he is. Everyone here is dying to know how he met you.”

“Excluding my humble self.” Cassandra said before I could respond

“Don't pretend,” Cecelia scoffed, her face snapping to Cassandra. “Let's not act like this isn't personal for you, Cassandra.”

Cassandra didn't reply but I knew she was trying to hold her anger back in.

They fixed their attention on me once again and I leaned back into my chair with a smile.

“We actually met in a mall,” I started. “Was it love at first sight?”

I acted like I was zoning out and going back into that memory like it was the pleasant memory I've ever had when it was the worst nightmare I've had in my entire life.

“We bumped into each other,” I continued. “Everything I've bought fell to the floor and he crouched down to help me pick them up.”

The ladies gasped, their hands going over their mouths. “Mr. Kane really did that?”

Their eyes were wide open in surprise. “Like….. he really did that?”

I only smiled and twirled my chair around, feeling the moment.

Cassandra chuckled and that forced me to look at her. Slowly, she also turned her gaze to me.

She wheeled her chair closer to me and leaned in beside my ear. She whispered. “We both know that is a goddamn lie, Adrian will never do that for you,”

“Crouch down?” She scoffed. “In your dreams!”

My jaws clenched but I quickly hid it because I didn't want the other ladies to see through my facade.

“About the second question,” I smiled at everyone. “I think we should ask Miss Cassandra.”

“Why on earth did my husband leave her? She should know.”

Everyone agreed with me and turned to look at her. She looked at me with her eyes burning in anger.

“He picked you from the streets!” She snapped. “Don't act like you are any special to Adrian Kane, you will never be!”

Cecelia laughed. “What's this?” She looked at Cassandra surprised.

“Don't tell me you are jealous right now!” She blinked her eyes fast with a wide smile. “You just heard her, she said they met in a mall! Not on some streets!”

I let out a low chuckle to myself. They won't believe her anyways, they'd prefer believing Adrian Kane's wife to his ex.

Cassandra could say nothing anymore as she went totally silent.

“This is pointless” She breathed out. “You are all too blind to see the truth and I won't pretend like I don't see it too.”

She stood up, her chair scraping mercilessly against the floor.

Our eyes locked for some seconds and her jaws were clenched, her eyes flaring with hatred as they bored into mine.

She walked out of the door and no one stopped her. They only watched her walking until she was out of the room.

They turned back to me when she was gone.

Cecelia raised her voice again. “We won't be having another gathering until after a month, we will like to add you to our platform, is that okay?” She asked.

“Of course,” I smiled. “It is.”

“We'll be having a mask party, would you like to attend that too?” She stood up and walked to me.

“Maybe you can convince Mr. Kane to show up too, no one would know he's there. It's a mask party after all,” she said in a low tone.

I chuckled nervously. That would probably not be possible but it's too early to let her down.

“Of course,” I replied. “I'll try to convince him.”

Everyone of them giggled, looking glad that I would be bringing Adrian Kane along to their mask party.

“Then, we will end the gathering here,” Cecelia said. “I'll be sure to add you to the platform.”

I stood up and grabbed my bag on the table.

“Then, I'll take my leave.” I smiled slightly. “It was nice spending time with you ladies today.”

I walked outside and David was still standing by the door, his gaze fixed on a spot.

“Are you done, ma'am?” He asked.

“Yes, let's leave,” I replied.

We walked out of the organization, heading to where he parked the car.

David held the car door open for me. I was about to get in when I heard a loud voice behind me.

“Crouch down and pack your stuff? Really?” It was Cassandra. “That's funny.”

“You watch too many K-dramas, don't you?” She added.

I sighed deeply in frustration and turned to her. I raised a brow.

She was resting her hand on a car, her head tilted to the side.

She's beautiful, I wouldn't lie. She stood tall in a fitted black dress that clung to her curves like it belonged there, her long black hair falling sleek and glossy down her back.

Her makeup was flawless, deliberate… sharp eyeliner, nude lips, and a confidence that bordered on cruelty.

I also didn't know why Adrian Kane would leave such a lady, all in the name of revenge.

“Don't you think it's time to get into your car and leave?” My voice was calm, frustration creeping into my tone.

She leaned away from the car and moved closer to me. “You are forcing yourself on him, aren't you?”

I scoffed. I just couldn't tell her he was the one refusing to let me go.

“The mall shit is a stupid lie, they were all just too foolish to realize that!” She spat.

“What do you know?” I sneered.

She chuckled. “I already told you, you don't know Adrian Kane. You don't know who he is.”

Her words rang a bell and my eyes widened. The message from last night! “Wait, that was you?”

She smirked. “If you really want to know about him, then reply to that message.”

She walked away then slid into her car immediately while I stood speechless.

What exactly does she know about Adrian Kane that she wants to share? Why is she fixated on letting me in on the secret?
