Chapter 738: White Shark's Message

Chapter 738: White Shark's Message

We finished our work early in the afternoon and headed to the school to pick up Brett.

When we arrived, there were already quite a few parents waiting at the school gate.

"Picking up Brett again, huh?" Renee's icy voice suddenly cut through the chatter behind us.

Hearing her voice made my skin crawl, like I was being haunted by a ghost.

Royce and I turned around to face her.

Today, Renee was wearing a white dress. If you didn't know her, you might think she was some innocent and kind-hearted woman.

I gave her a once-over. "What do you want?"

"No big deal," Renee said, curling her lips into a sly smile. "I'm here to pick up my daughter. Thought I'd say hi when I saw you."

To me, her behavior felt more like a challenge.

She was just rubbing it in our faces that we couldn't turn her in to the cops right now, so she kept popping up to annoy us.

"Your daughter's over there," I said, catching a glimpse of a familiar small figure from the corner of my eye.

Renee nodded and called out to Briar, who ran up to her. But she didn't seem in any rush to leave.

I really didn't want to deal with her anymore, so I turned away, ignoring both Briar and Renee.

But Renee seemed determined not to let us off the hook. She suddenly mentioned a name.

"White Shark asked me to pass along his regards. He wants to know how you've been lately."

Hearing that name made my blood run cold. I spun around to face Renee, but her smile was blindingly bright.

"Anyway, I've delivered his message. Your response probably doesn't matter," she said before walking away with Briar.

I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms until I felt numb. Royce grabbed my wrist and gently pried my fingers open one by one.

"Take a deep breath. Relax."

Royce's voice was calm and reassuring, bringing a sense of peace.

I looked up at him. "You think..."

"White Shark had Renee say that to mess with our plans and emotions. We can't let him succeed."

Royce's words were serious.

I nodded, realizing he had a point.

No wonder Renee had been showing up more frequently. It was deliberate.

But we still hadn't found any trace or information about White Shark. Could he really still be out there somewhere?

Renee wouldn't lie about something like this, right?

After all, Renee had survived the ocean.

As I pondered further, Brett ran over and hugged my leg.

"Mom, Dad, you both came to pick me up?"

Brett's voice snapped me back to reality. I crouched down and picked him up.

For now, I needed to push those dark thoughts aside. I couldn't let my negative emotions affect Brett.

"Yeah, are you happy?" Royce asked, giving Brett's cheek a gentle squeeze.

Brett nodded seriously, and Royce took his backpack.

We walked to the car, chatting, and my mood gradually stabilized.

After dropping Brett off at Kelly's house, Royce and I headed home.

That night, Renee's words kept me awake, tossing and turning.

"Can't sleep?" Royce pulled me into his arms, concern etched on his face.

I nodded. "Renee warned me a few days ago. Do you think they're really planning something?"

"They've been quiet for a while. It's expected they'd make a move," Royce said, rubbing my head. "Whether we're worried or indifferent, it won't change their plans."

He was right, but I still couldn't sleep.

I rarely felt this way. If it weren't for Renee, I wouldn't be like this.

But I didn't want Royce to worry along with me. He'd been busy lately. I needed to manage my own emotions.

"No point in overthinking now. Let's just rest," I said, forcing myself to relax.

"If you can't sleep, we can talk," Royce said, looking at me seriously.

I almost thought he knew I was struggling. Was I that obvious?

"Okay."

I closed my eyes, hoping sleep would come.

I focused on my breathing and tried to empty my mind.

Eventually, I fell asleep.

But my sleep was restless, filled with nightmares.

I couldn't remember the details, just the image of the sea.

I woke up abruptly, breathing heavily, and rubbed my forehead.

"Nightmare?" Royce asked, worried.

I nodded. "But I feel better now. What time is it?"

"Just after four. We can still sleep a bit," Royce said, looking tired.

I felt a pang of guilt and rubbed his face. "Let's rest a bit more."

Royce held me close and closed his eyes.

I still couldn't sleep, staring at his face in a daze.

If we'd stayed out of this, maybe things would be different.

But there's no turning back. Even if we'd stayed together, who knows what would have happened?

These issues involved the previous generation's grudges.

I looked at Royce, feeling a bit sleepy. I snuggled closer and closed my eyes.

When I woke up again, it was daylight.

"Any more nightmares?" Royce asked.

I shook my head. "No, I slept well these last two hours."

I wasn't lying. I felt much better than earlier.

Royce looked relieved and we got up to start our day.

At the office, I felt energized and decided to discuss a project with Asher.

But when I called, he didn't answer.
