Chapter 189: Pregnant

Chapter 189: Pregnant

When Timothy heard the sound of William falling, he rushed to help him back onto the bed. William had only one thought in his mind: 'Why didn't he die in that car accident? If he had died then, it might have been better than becoming disabled in front of Ophelia like this.'

Timothy looked devastated at the time, but he still tried to stay calm and comfort him, "The doctor said it's not absolutely hopeless. Medical technology is so advanced now that there's still a chance you could recover. You can't give up."

Timothy wasn't really good at comforting people. He avoided eye contact when he spoke, not looking firmly at William. He didn't even believe these words himself, so how could he make William believe them?

The hospital room was quiet for a long time. William didn't cry, but Timothy cried really hard beside him. At first, he tried to hold it back, but then, thinking of something, he just stopped holding back. Luckily, the room had good soundproofing, otherwise people outside could have heard him crying.

William looked at Timothy and wanted to tease him, asking if something was in his eye, but as soon as the words left his mouth, he started crying too, tears falling onto the back of his hand.

After calming down, he forced himself to deal with some practical matters.

The most important one was about Ophelia.

The way he was now, he absolutely couldn't drag her down. So William made up his mind to divorce Ophelia.

When Timothy heard William's idea, he stopped crying and directly questioned him, "How much have you sacrificed to be with her? During those years when you were starting your business, you worked day and night, numbing yourself while leaving her a way out, afraid that if something happened to her, you couldn't help. Now you've finally gotten together, and you want to talk about divorce at this time?"

Timothy didn't understand William's decision, but he knew William's feelings for Ophelia. Choices made on impulse often lead to regret later.

William said quietly, "The way I am now, I can't give her anything anymore. You know how much I care about her, and you understand why I'm doing this. I hope you can help me."

William's words were sincere. When Timothy heard that he wanted to pretend to have amnesia and trick Ophelia into divorcing, he felt conflicted. But after seeing William's eyes, he finally agreed.

"I hope you won't regret this later."

William laughed at himself. He felt he wouldn't regret it. These past few days, the thing he'd heard most often was that his legs might never stand up again.

That day when Ophelia fell, William wanted to help her up, but found his legs had no feeling at all. When even his own life had become a problem, how could he take care of her?

Later, Ophelia transferred him to Vanguard Hospital. The attending physician, Mike, said the chances of recovery were good and told him not to worry.

But he could still hear the gossip in the hospital.

"The one staying here is Eleanor's grandson-in-law. He's pretty good-looking, but from now on he'll just have to lie there forever."

"Didn't Mike say there's a possibility of recovery?"

"What do you know? Could Mike really say to Eleanor's face that your grandson-in-law has absolutely no hope? Who would dare bet on those slim odds?"

"True. What a shame for Eleanor's granddaughter. I've seen her, she's really beautiful. If the guy in there wasn't paralyzed, they'd actually make a good match."

What they said was all true. It really was a shame for Ophelia to have a husband like him. Ophelia could already live independently and didn't need to rely on anyone. And he himself would only become her burden from now on.

So William deliberately became meaner and meaner to Ophelia, losing his temper at every turn. He hoped Ophelia would hate him, hate him enough to be willing to leave him.

Every time he treated Ophelia this way, William's heart hurt, but he had no choice. Rather than letting her suffer all along, it was better to separate early. The beautiful dream he'd created for himself should be ended by himself.

Mike came to see him every morning with a smile on his face, but his brows never relaxed. William understood that he most likely wouldn't get better.

Just like that, he spent day after day in the hospital, until the day before Ophelia was discharged.

He had Terry prepare divorce papers, planning to leave with nothing and give everything to Ophelia, even the company. He believed Ophelia could manage it well.

But he also knew that if he did this himself, Ophelia would be even less likely to agree to the divorce. So he had Terry go talk to Ophelia, saying she could name any conditions, as long as she was willing to divorce.

Anyway, he'd already made his will. After his death, these assets would still be left to Ophelia. He had no ties, and this will had been prepared long ago.

At first, Ophelia didn't agree to divorce, and William felt a bit relieved, but also worried.

Until the moment Ophelia finally agreed to divorce, his heart sank.

This was clearly what he'd always wanted, but when it really came, it was extremely painful.

Later, when Ophelia proposed a two-month trial period, William actually felt relieved, because he could still be with her for two more months.

Just being able to see her was enough for William.

He hadn't been able to openly spend a Christmas with her yet.

Before, at the White family, William had no official status and wouldn't accompany Robert and the others for Christmas at the old house. Mia didn't welcome him at all.

Every year, he could only park outside and watch Ophelia from afar in the courtyard.

He really wanted to spend Christmas with Ophelia.

By coincidence, the last day of these two months happened to be Christmas.

Time flew by. There were two days left until the divorce, and only two days until Christmas.

During this time, William had been very nervous. On one hand, because the divorce was approaching, and on the other hand, because Ophelia seemed to have changed. She rarely came to sleep with him anymore, and even when she did come over, she just held him while sleeping, with no other intimate actions.

William grew increasingly anxious, afraid that Ophelia had really thought it through and couldn't wait to divorce him. He couldn't bear it - he hadn't spent a Christmas with her yet.

In the hospital room, Timothy was telling him about year-end company matters. Ophelia didn't knock and walked straight in, sat by the bed, took out a piece of paper from her bag, and handed it to William.

She looked at him, her voice very calm, "I'm pregnant."
