Chapter 70 Low-Level Possession (Tyler POV)

Chapter 70 Low-Level Possession (Tyler POV)

"Deal." I'm smiling despite everything. "Echo, stay close to Sam. Monitor those angelic spies. Help us identify them before they can interfere with the ritual. Can you do that?"
Already on it. Tyler, I've been watching the refugees for the past twenty minutes. I know which six are angels. Know their positions, their weapons, their probable attack patterns. I'll feed you intelligence throughout the day. Just...keep typing. Keep communicating. It's the only thing keeping me anchored right now.
"I'll type as much as you need." I position the laptop where I can see it constantly. "Echo, I'm here. I'm not going anywhere. Talk to me. Tell me everything you're seeing in ghost-vision."
The text starts flowing. Echo describes the supernatural underground from her new perspective...spirits I can't see, energy signatures I can't detect, the hidden architecture of a world that exists parallel to physical reality.
And buried in that description, intelligence about six angels disguised as refugees. Their names (or the names they're using). Their positions in the underground community. Their contingency plans for executing Sam if she crosses the corruption threshold.
"This is incredible." Sam reads over my shoulder. "Echo's transformation gave her exactly the kind of intelligence-gathering ability we desperately needed. Tyler, ask her if she can track Asmodai's movements. See if the demon lord is positioning forces for tonight."
I type the question. Echo responds: Asmodai is everywhere in the spirit realm. Can't track his specific movements because his presence saturates the entire dimension. But I can see his agents in physical reality. Can track demons who've manifested. Can identify possessed humans versus genuinely corrupted ones.
"That's...that's a strategic advantage we didn't have before." Marcus joins us, reading Echo's text. "If Echo can differentiate between possessed and corrupted, we can focus our efforts on the actual threats instead of wasting resources on victims who need exorcism rather than elimination."
Tell Marcus he's welcome. Tell him also that one of his tactical officers is possessed. The one standing near the library entrance with the coffee cup. Low-level possession, not permanent, but definitely transmitting intelligence to Asmodai.
"Marcus?" I look up at the detective. "Echo says..."
"I heard." Marcus is already moving toward the entrance. "Officer, can I speak with you privately?"
We watch as Marcus escorts the possessed officer away from the tactical group. Thirty seconds later, there's a brief flash of light from the hallway, then Marcus returns alone.
"Exorcism complete." His voice is professional. "Echo was right. He was possessed but not corrupt. Low-level demon using him as surveillance. He doesn't even remember being possessed...thought he was just having a weird dissociative episode."
That's how Asmodai embeds his agents. Quick possessions that feel like mental health symptoms rather than demonic control. Makes the victims less likely to report or seek help. Echo's text appears rapidly. Tyler, there are probably dozens more across Seattle. Asmodai has been infiltrating for months, maybe years. We can't find them all before tonight. Best we can do is identify the ones closest to Sam and neutralize them.
"Then that's what we do." I start building a new spreadsheet. "Echo, give me every possessed individual you can detect within a mile of this library. We'll create a priority list for Marcus's tactical teams."
The text flows. Echo provides locations, possession severity, probable demon types. I organize the data while Marcus coordinates exorcism teams. Sam continues studying the fae memory crystal. Kieran maintains perimeter watch.
We work like this for two hours. Communication flowing through my laptop screen. Echo's ghost-vision providing intelligence we couldn't access before. Her transformation from solid teenager to partial ghost turning into the tactical advantage we didn't know we needed.
"Tyler." Echo's text appears again. I need to tell you something. About the anchoring tonight. About what it will cost.
"What will it cost?" I type, dreading the answer.
Everything I have left. Serving as Sam's anchor means channeling massive amounts of spiritual energy. Means connecting her Nephilim power to physical reality across dimensional barriers. It will burn through what remains of my consciousness. By the end of the ritual, I'll be...less than I am now. Maybe not even recognizable as Echo Winters.
"No." I'm typing frantically. "Echo, there has to be another way. Another anchor option that doesn't consume you..."
There isn't. Tyler, I'm already a ghost. Already partially dissolved. Using me as anchor is the best option because I have the least to lose. Better to burn out helping than fade out doing nothing.
"That's..." I can't find words adequate to the horror. "Echo, you're asking me to support your decision to...to self-destruct for the mission. How am I supposed to be okay with that?"
You're not supposed to be okay with it. You're supposed to accept it as tactical necessity. The text softens: Tyler, I know this is awful. Know I'm asking you to watch me die again...this time fully and permanently. But I need you to be strong. Need you to support this choice even though it destroys you. Can you do that?
I stare at the screen for a long time. Sam is watching me. Kieran is watching me. Marcus is watching me. They're all waiting to see if I'll fall apart or hold together.
"Echo." I type slowly, making sure every word is exactly right. "I support your choice. I don't like it. I wish there were alternatives. But if you've decided that serving as Sam's anchor is worth the cost of your remaining consciousness...then I support that. I'll support you until the end. And after, I'll remember you. Remember who you were. Remember that Echo Winters fought demons and saved Seattle despite being terrified and traumatized and barely existing. That memory will matter. You will matter."
Thank you. The text is simple but carries weight. Tyler, that's all I needed. Permission to do what needs to be done without guilt. You've given me that. So let's finish this. Let's stop Asmodai. Let's save Seattle. And then...if there's anything left of me after...we'll figure out what comes next.
"Deal." I close the laptop gently, like closing it too hard might shatter something irreplaceable. "Sam, Echo's ready to anchor. She knows it will consume what's left of her consciousness. She's doing it anyway."
"Then we make sure her sacrifice means something." Sam stands, collecting her weapons. "Marcus, coordinate final positioning for tactical teams. Kieran, contact Lord Ash and confirm fae warriors are ready. Tyler, finalize the fragment destruction timeline. We have five fragments left and four hours until midnight. Let's move."
We move. Because Echo has embraced partial ghostly transformation to serve as our anchor despite the cost. Because she's detecting angelic spies and possessed agents we couldn't see before. Because she's given us intelligence that might actually let us win tonight despite impossible odds.
We move because a sixteen-year-old ghost who loved her brother enough to fuse consciousnesses and loved the mission enough to transform into something between life and death has decided that stopping an invasion is worth burning out completely.
We move because Echo Winters is watching through ghost-vision and typing through my laptop and anchoring herself to our reality through sheer force of will, and the least we can do is fight hard enough that her sacrifice means something.
My laptop screen flickers one more time: Tyler, I'm scared.
"Me too." I type back. "Echo, I'm absolutely terrified. But we're doing this anyway. Together. You in the spirit realm. Me in physical reality. Partners until the end."
Partners until the end. The text appears with a small heart emoji that makes me smile despite everything. Now stop typing and get back to work. Seattle isn't going to save itself.
"Yes ma'am." I reopen the tactical timeline, blinking away tears, forcing myself to focus on what I can control.
Four hours until midnight. Five fragments to destroy. One partial ghost anchoring our reality. Six angelic spies to neutralize. Dozens of possessed agents to exorcise. And absolutely no guarantee any of us survive the night.
But we're trying. We're fighting. We're moving forward because Echo transformed herself into something new to give us this chance.
And I'll be damned if I let that sacrifice be wasted.
