Chapter 67 Fused Consciousness (Echo POV)
Chapter 67 Fused Consciousness (Echo POV)
"Don't. Echo, don't die like I did. Don't throw yourself away for tactics and missions and people who'll move on without you. You deserve more than heroic death at sixteen."
"Seventeen now. In spirit form years." But the joke falls flat. "Rhodes, what do I deserve? To fade slowly while refusing to help? To watch Seattle burn while preserving my own consciousness? That's not heroism. That's just...selfishness with extra steps."
"It's survival." Rhodes's presence trembles within our fusion. "Echo, our parents died when we were kids. I died when you were thirteen. You've lost everyone you've ever loved. Don't you want to...to rest? To stop fighting and let go?"
"No." The word comes from the deepest part of me. "Rhodes, I can't rest while people are still suffering. Can't let go while there's still work to do. Maybe that makes me an idiot. Maybe it means I'm too damaged to stop fighting. But it's who I am."
"Who we are." Rhodes's voice softens. "Echo, if we're doing this...if we're staying fused until the ritual and then dissolving...let's do it right. Let's be the best anchor Sam could ask for. Let's make our final act count for something."
"Together." Our combined presence solidifies with renewed purpose. "Rhodes and Echo. The Winters siblings. Fighting until the end."
We feel the dissolution beginning. The edges of our fused consciousness starting to fray. Hours, Asmodai said. We have hours before we fade completely.
Hours to serve as an anchor. Hours to help save Seattle. Hours to make sixteen and seventeen years of life mean something beyond survival and suffering.
"Sam." I reach out through the dimensional barriers, trying to communicate with the physical world. "Sam, if you can hear me...we're ready. Rhodes and I are fused. We're stable. We can serve as your anchor tonight despite the dissolution. Just...use us quickly. Because we don't have long."
No response. The barrier between spirit realm and physical reality is too thick for normal communication.
"Then we wait." Rhodes settles deeper into our fusion. "Echo, tell me stories. Tell me what happened after I died. Tell me about Sam and Tyler and the team you found. Tell me everything so I know my death wasn't wasted."
So I tell him. Tell him about three years of grief and hunting and slowly learning to use medium abilities he never got to develop. Tell him about meeting Sam and Tyler and Kieran and becoming part of something that mattered. Tell him about this week's chaos...demons and portals and blood oaths and impossible choices.
Tell him about Tyler confessing his feelings. About promising to say yes after the ritual. About twelve years of life force sacrificed to keep me solid just a few hours longer.
"He loves you." Rhodes sounds awed. "Echo, this Tyler...he gave up twelve years of his life for you. That's..."
"I know." Our combined consciousness aches with the knowledge of what I'm losing. "Rhodes, I was going to...after the ritual...I was going to tell him I felt the same way. That I wanted to try. That I'd never met anyone who made me feel like I could have a future instead of just survival."
"You still can." Rhodes insists. "Echo, we can hold on long enough for you to talk to him one more time. Long enough to say what you need to say."
"What's the point?" Bitterness bleeds through our fusion. "Rhodes, I'm dead. We're dead. Tyler giving up twelve years won't matter if I dissolve before tonight. And telling him I love him...past tense...will just make the goodbye harder for both of us."
"So make it easier by not saying goodbye at all?" Rhodes's voice is sharp. "Echo, that's cowardice. Tyler deserves to know how you felt. Deserves to hear that his sacrifice mattered to you. Don't rob him of that closure just because you're afraid of hurting."
He's right. I hate that he's right, but three years of being the protective big brother has given Rhodes uncomfortable wisdom about emotional honesty.
"Fine." Our combined presence focuses on the barrier between realms. "But you're helping me. Rhodes, your consciousness has been in the spirit realm for three years. You know how to communicate across dimensions better than I do."
"Together." He pours energy into our combined voice. "On three. One. Two. Three..."
"Tyler!" We shout across dimensional barriers with everything we have. "Tyler, if you can hear us...we're here! Rhodes and Echo! We're fused! We're ready to serve as Sam's anchor but we need you to know..."
The strain of cross-dimensional communication hits like a physical blow. Our fusion starts fragmenting immediately, consciousness tearing at the seams from the effort.
"Echo, stop!" Rhodes pulls us back before we dissolve completely. "We can't...that took too much energy. If we try again..."
"We die." I feel it too. The fusion is failing faster than Asmodai predicted. Minutes now, not hours. "Rhodes, I'm sorry. I should have listened. Should have preserved our energy for the ritual instead of trying to talk to Tyler."
"You did what you needed to do." Rhodes's presence wraps around mine protectively. "Echo, if we're dissolving anyway, at least you tried to say goodbye properly. That matters."
We fade. Not completely...not yet...but enough that the spirit realm starts looking less solid, more distant, like reality itself is becoming a memory we can't quite grasp.
"Echo." Rhodes's voice is faint now. "Before we go...before we dissolve completely...I need you to know something. I don't regret dying to protect you three years ago. I'd make the same choice a thousand times. You were...are...the most important person in my existence. And if dying meant you got to live a little longer, it was worth it."
Tears that don't exist burn through our fading consciousness. "Rhodes, don't give me the goodbye speech. We're supposed to hold on until the ritual. Supposed to help Sam. Supposed to..."
"We tried." His presence is barely distinguishable from mine anymore. "Echo, we tried so hard. Fought Asmodai. Fused our consciousnesses. Attempted to be heroes. But sometimes trying isn't enough. Sometimes..."
Our fusion collapses. Not completely, but enough that Rhodes and I separate back into individual consciousnesses. Weak. Barely present. Dissolving into the gray space that's growing darker by the second.
"Rhodes?" I reach for him, but my hands...metaphorical hands...pass through his fading presence. "Rhodes, stay with me. Please. Don't fade. Don't..."
"Love you, Echo." His voice is barely a whisper now. "Tell Tyler...tell Sam...tell everyone..."
He's gone. Dissolved completely. Rhodes Winters, who protected me for thirteen years and suffered in the spirit realm for three more, has finally faded into nothing.
And I'm alone. Truly alone. A ghost without even my brother's presence to keep me company in the darkness.
"Sam." I whisper it to the void. "Sam, I tried. Tried to be strong enough. Tried to serve as your anchor. But I failed. Rhodes and I both failed. And now..."
Now I'm dissolving too. Following my brother into whatever comes after consciousness ends.
The spirit realm goes dark. And Echo Winters...medium, survivor, almost-girlfriend, failed anchor...fades into nothing while Seattle races toward midnight and the ritual that will decide everything.
