No sooner had she uttered those words and Gretchen heard the melodic chime of the fingerprint door lock being released.
In the blink of an eye, Cristofer swung the door open and entered the room.
Fixing his gaze upon Gretchen, he furrowed his brow and addressed her directly in a low, commanding tone, “Tell me, what else do you want?”
“Can’t you be nicer to me?” Gretchen said with dissatisfaction. “I’m pregnant with your child, after all. Besides, don’t you want me to donate my lungs to Estelle? I guess that you haven’t found any other suitable donor, right?”
When Cristofer heard her words, blue veins stood out on his temples. He gritted his teeth and said, “Cut the crap. Money, house, shares, or my company? Just tell me what you want directly.”
Raising her eyebrows in surprise, Gretchen asked, “You are even willing to give me your company?”
“As long as you are willing to donate your lungs to Estelle, you can even claim my life.”
“Do you love her so much?” Gretchen chuckled.
“It’s none of your business. Just tell me what you want.”
“I want you to treat me well and return to stay with me every night before the baby is born.”
“No way,” Cristofer refused without hesitation.
The smile on Gretchen’s face disappeared in an instant. “Since you love her so much, why didn’t you cherish her before?”
“Had it not been for the car accident, I wouldn’t have misinterpreted her intentions, and our relationship wouldn’t have deteriorated to this extent. Neither his father nor my parents would have lost their lives, and Mrs. Moorsum wouldn’t have perished either. It is your actions that bear the responsibility for all these tragic outcomes. Now, you are simply an organ donor for me, specifically intended for Estelle’s benefit. Do you understand the gravity of the situation?”
Upon hearing this, Gretchen expressed her disapproval, stating, “Cristofer, as you yourself admitted, it was your misunderstanding of Estelle that led to this situation. Cristofer was silent.
“You must be feeling jealous now, aren’t you?” Gretchen remarked, implying, “Estelle has moved on and is in a relationship with Tim. She no longer loves you. She left you and started anew while you are left powerless, attempting to please me on her behalf. Unfortunately, no matter how hard you try, she won’t return to you.”
With a stern expression, Cristofer countered, “She’s with Tim? Who informed you of this?”
“Considering how quickly my scandal spread and tarnished my reputation, her new lover must possess wealth and influence. In Hadale, only three individuals have such power: you, Justin, and Tim. It cannot be you or Justin, so it must be Tim. It’s not too difficult to deduce. Cristofer, do you now understand who the mysterious’ Mr. Mysterious’ that Estelle often mentioned is? Don’t you think you should be grateful for my revelation and reward me?” Gretchen remarked, anticipating acknowledgment and appreciation from Cristofer.
“What reward do you want?”
“Stay with me tonight.”
Hearing Gretchen’s words, Cristofer sneered, remembering that she had said the same words to him the last time she threatened him.
He looked down at her flat belly and asked doubtfully, “You miscarried, so you want to drug me again? What did you prepare today? Drugged water or wine?”
“I know you will guard against me and won’t drink anything I give you, so this time, I have prepared something else that can definitely make you listen to me,” Gretchen swiftly blurted out.
Hearing this, Cristofer frowned and looked at her with suspicion and vigilance.
Gretchen smiled and said, “Don’t look at me like that. I won’t hurt you. A few days ago, I accidentally found a notebook at home. It should be Estelle’s notebook. The handwriting looks childish. And the words on it might have been written many years ago.”
Cristofer suddenly stared at her with sharp eyes. “Is this her diary?”
“Sort of,” Gretchen confirmed as she picked up the notebook with a brown cover and flipped through it carelessly. “In the notebook is a wish list that she wrote down before her twentieth birthday. Unfortunately, she didn’t celebrate her twentieth birthday. I looked through the wishes and found that none of them had been fulfilled. What a pity!”
All of a sudden, Cristofer became emotional, and he reached out to grab the notebook. “Give it to me!”
Gretchen had expected he would react like this, so she was well prepared and quickly dodged when Cristofer approached her.
Then she took out a lighter and flicked it, warning Cristofer in a loud voice, “Don’t move! Otherwise, I will burn this notebook, and you will never be able to see what she has written!”
The flame on the lighter flickered and almost met the notebook.
Cristofer halted his tracks instantly.
He still recognized the notebook. He had accompanied Estelle to buy it when she was at university.
Six years had passed, and some of the paper in it was loose and was about to fall.
“Okay. Okay. I won’t move. Calm down,” Cristofer said, trying to calm Gretchen down.
When Gretchen witnessed his current state, she couldn’t help but burst into laughter and remarked, “Cristofer, I bet you never anticipated being in such a vulnerable position controlled by me.”
“Just give me the notebook.”
“No,” Gretchen said willfully, “If you don’t promise to stay with me tonight, I won’t give it to you. I’ll soak it in the water later.”
Cristofer dismissed Gretchen’s actions, stating, “Please cease your absurdity. You’re only acting this way because your plan fell through, and you’re feeling resentful. And your desire to be with me stems solely from your greed for money. I am willing to provide you with any amount of money you desire, alright?”
With a sneer, Gretchen played with the lighter and said with a sigh, “Yes, the reason why I chose to be with you was that I wanted money from you in the past. My mother said that you are an inexhaustible money resource. Even if you lost the Hans Group, you would be able to make a comeback. And the fact showed that my mother has great discernment in choosing a husband for me. But unfortunately, everything went as she expected except that Estelle was pregnant again!”
When she spoke the word “pregnant,” she gritted her teeth.
