Chapter 84 The Siblings Who Didn't Have Time to Be Born
In America, actually, there was still enough time for everything.
Although Bella's suicide interrupted his return, as long as he was willing, showing up at the wedding on time was not a problem at all.
It was uncle Tod's sudden appearance that interrupted all his stubbornness and disregard.
Not having seen him for over a decade, the humorous and amiable uncle Tod in Avila's memory had already turned into a weathered old man.
But Avila still recognized him from his familiar features.
However, even before they had the chance to greet each other, the other person angrily swung their cane and struck his arm.
Avila endured the intense pain, his gaze sweeping over uncle Tod's noticeably crippled right leg, and remained composed without furrowing his brows.
He remembered that uncle Tod's lame right leg was a result of saving his father when they were young.
Avila dismissed the bodyguards and respectfully stood before him. "Uncle Tod..."
"Don't call me uncle, I can't stand it!"
"..."
After beating him, uncle Tod still looked furious, barely maintaining his balance as he leaned on his cane. "I'm asking you, are you going to marry Joel's daughter?"
Avila paused, raised his eyes, and calmly replied, "We are already married."
"You..." uncle Tod pointed at him, trembling with anger. "You scoundrel! Marrying the daughter of our enemy, do you think you're being fair to your deceased parents?"
The intense pain in his arm and the deeply furrowed brows made Avila, for the first time, lose his composure in front of his uncle who had watched him grow up. "When my parents passed away, Lara was still a child. She had no involvement in it; she is innocent."
"A child?" uncle Tod sneered, a hint of maliciousness in his eyes. "Then what about your unborn sibling? Are they not innocent as well?"
Avila looked at him in disbelief. "What are you saying?"
"Before Avila Group encountered trouble, your father told me that your mother had been two months pregnant. Because it was still less than three months, they couldn't reveal it publicly, so only a few people knew about it."
Avila froze in shock, unable to recover for a long time.
Uncle Tod emphasized, "So, are you saying that an unborn sibling is not as important as the daughter of an enemy?"
"..."
"Although I've been in the United States for these years, I often inquire about your life through others. I know you've been by Joel's side, and I know that it's all for revenge!"
While speaking, uncle Tod gazed at him with a heartache. "After staying hidden for ten years, you managed to reclaim the company. Why would you jeopardize your revenge for a woman?"
Question after question, like sharp blades, pierced his heart one by one.
Caught off guard, he struggled to cope.
A younger brother or sister...
Avila clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white. The handsome face was clouded with gloom, his heart in agony.
He never knew that hatred could deepen over time...
And he didn't know that trying to escape from hatred was nothing but wishful thinking.
The lights in the operating room went out.
The doctors came out, removed their masks, and said, "Miss Cole's wrist injury has been taken care of. Despite losing a lot of blood, we managed to save her."
"What about her hand?"
The doctor sighed. "Both new and old injuries are on one arm. It's a complicated case, but we've managed to treat it. Sorry, we have tried our best to save her. Whether she can continue playing the violin in the future depends on her recovery. However, it's best not to have too high hopes."
Avila furrowed his brow. "Thank you, doctor."
"By the way, Miss Cole has severe sickle cell anemia. Although we have saved her life, she has lost a lot of blood. She will need continuous blood transfusions. However, her blood type is rare, and our hospital's supply is insufficient. If possible, you can try other hospitals."
"Understood."
Bella, pale-faced, was pushed out by the nurse.
Uncle Tod asked, "Who is she?"
Avila replied calmly, "A friend."
"What kind of friend makes you leave your own wedding to come to the United States to take care of her?"
"Any kind of friend is fine as long as I'm willing."
Uncle Tod didn't probe further. He had already said the most important words and shouldn't interfere or inquire any further. Nor would he.
Times change, and if he still treated Avila as the child from ten years ago, that would be extremely foolish and dangerous.
However, leaving behind his so-called wife and coming here to take care of another woman showed that he didn't have much genuine affection for Joel's daughter either.
Uncle Tod let out a sigh. "Avila, now that you have regained control of the company, it's a way of getting back at her father. Please don't make the same mistakes for a woman again. If she is beautiful, play with her and then leave her. Don't take it too seriously."
Avila's voice was cold and composed. "I have just taken over the company, and internal affairs still need to be reconciled. Marrying her was a way to appease the board of directors. Uncle Tod, you're thinking too much."
Uncle Tod nodded. "If that's really the case, I support your decision. You need to set your mind straight and not forget the feud between the Avila Family and the Morris Family. Don't think that she's innocent and defenseless just because she's young. It's a jungle out there. Being Joel's daughter is already a mistake!"
Being Joel's daughter is already a mistake...
The words echoed in Avila's ears.
In the pitch-black room, Avila absentmindedly stared into space, not even noticing when the cigarette burned his fingers. When he snapped back to reality, his index and ring fingers were red from the burn.
He threw away the cigarette butt and walked out of the room.
Inside the hospital room, Bella woke up after receiving a blood transfusion, but she was very weak, and her wrist was also in pain.
However, as long as she thought about Lara angrily and helplessly drawing blood from herself to give to her, Bella felt a sense of relief throughout her body.
Avila stood by the bed, looking down at her with a cold gaze. "Did I not say that hurting your own body is the most foolish thing to do?"
Bella's gaze fell on his right arm in a cast, and she weakly asked, "What happened to your arm?"
Avila smirked, devoid of any laughter, but with a sneer. "Got beat up. Are you surprised?"
Bella closed her eyes and asked, "What do you mean?"
The man pulled a chair and sat down by the bed, exuding an aloof and cold demeanor. "I never believe in coincidences," he said.
Uncle Tod appeared abruptly outside her operating room and struck him with a force that seemed like an attempt to wake him up.
In America, he didn't expose him because no matter what uncle Tod said, he was his elder and he owed a debt to his father. He didn't need to make the other party lose face.
Bella bit her pale lips, unable to draw any blood even with force. When she let go, it left behind a trace of white. "That's right, I brought uncle Tod here. A few years ago, he sent someone to Emberton city to find you, and I happened to find out. Later, I kept in touch with him."
Avila sat expressionlessly.
Bella had just barely survived. Even though she was anxious inside, she didn't dare to be too excited. "Uncle Tod is also doing this for your own good. Marrying the enemy's daughter, you will definitely regret it. Besides, even if it's for the sibling who hadn’t been born, you shouldn't marry Lara!"
The man frowned. "Are you doing all this to stop me from attending my own wedding?"
Bella took a deep breath. "Yes, I'm risking my life to stop you from sinking deeper into it, Avila. You don't have to acknowledge the relationship between me and uncle Tod, but after the shareholders' meeting, you must divorce Lara. I don't want to see you regretting it for the rest of your life."
"Must?"
Avila smirked, teasingly looking at her. "Bella, no one can threaten me, including you, understand?"
