Chapter 11

I jumped out of bed, startled by a knock on my bedroom door. Heart pounding, I quickly realized it was just a dream and took a deep breath to calm myself. Determined to shake off the lingering unease, I rose from my bed and made my way towards the door. As I opened it, there stood Martha, holding a silver tray adorned with delicious food. Despite her attempt at a smile, I could see the sadness in her eyes, and it was evident that she had been crying. Inviting her into my room, she carefully placed the food on my small table.

"Martha, is something bothering you?" I inquired, concern evident in my voice.

"No, I'm fine," she replied, but her eyes betrayed her words.

"It's written all over your face, Martha. If you ever need someone to talk to, I'm here to listen," I reassured her, offering a warm smile.

"I appreciate it, Clara, but I'll be alright," she replied, attempting to smile before leaving the room.

After finishing my meal, I decided to freshen up and get dressed. With the intention of exploring the castle, I took a moment to admire myself in the mirror. A touch of lipstick and a quick comb through my hair, and I was ready to step out of my room.

As I walked down the corridor towards the grand room of the castle, I encountered several wolves who respectfully bowed and greeted me, as if acknowledging me as their Luna. Passing by a room, I overheard the familiar voices of a man and a woman. Curiosity getting the better of me, I discreetly peeked inside and saw Elijah and Martha engaged in a conversation. Martha's tear-streaked face revealed her emotional state as she confessed her feelings to Elijah.

"I've loved you for so long, Elijah," Martha confessed, her voice filled with emotion.

Elijah, however, responded with honesty, "But I don't feel the same way, Martha. I don't want to hurt you by forcing something that isn't there."

"Aries asked me to forget whatever I feel for him," Martha sobbed.

I felt a pang of guilt in my chest. I knew that Elijah' rejection was hurting Martha deeply. But I also knew that Elijah had his reasons for not wanting to be with her.

"I'm sorry, Martha. I know it hurts, but Elijah has his own reasons for saying that," I said softly.

Martha looked up at me with tear-stained eyes. "Do you know why he said that?" she asked.

I hesitated for a moment before answering. "I think he's just not ready for a relationship right now," I said, trying to be as vague as possible.

Martha nodded, but I could tell she wasn't satisfied with my answer. "Is there someone else?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

I shook my head. "No, there's no one else. Elijah just has some personal issues he needs to work through," I said, hoping that would be enough to satisfy her curiosity.

Martha sighed and wiped her tears away. "I just wish he would give me a chance," she said.

"I know, Martha. But sometimes, we can't force someone to love us," I said, trying to offer some comfort.

Martha nodded and gave me a small smile. "Thank you for listening, Emily," she said.

"Anytime, Martha. I'm here for you," I said, returning her smile.

As Martha walked away, I couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness for her. Love was never easy, especially when it was one-sided. But I knew that Martha was strong and would eventually move on from Elijah.

My heart skipped a beat as she posed the question. It caught me off guard, and for a moment, my mind wandered to the man I despised. But I quickly redirected my thoughts to my childhood crush, Bryle. He was just a classmate, nothing more.

Truth be told, I had never truly loved a man. I had never experienced the heartache and tears that Martha had gone through, and I took pride in that.

"Not yet. I'm not the kind of woman who goes chasing after men. Love doesn't come easily to me, Martha. I'm quite selective, so I've never had a boyfriend in my entire life," I replied.

"Boyfriend?" she asked, her curiosity piqued.

"Yes, a boyfriend. The man you love or have a relationship with," I clarified.

"Like a mate?" she innocently inquired.

"Yes, exactly," I responded with a smile.

I had forgotten that wolves sought mates rather than boyfriends or girlfriends. Martha poured her heart out to me about her feelings for Elias. Little did she know, I had overheard every word she had said to him.

"You know, all the girls here dream of Alpha Henrick. I'm the odd one out because I only dream of a simple man. But why? Why can't he love me?" she asked, her emotions raw.

"Perhaps we can't control who someone loves," I offered.

"But isn't love something we learn? Why won't he even give it a chance?" she questioned.

"It's complicated," I replied.

I struggled to find the right words to comfort her. We locked eyes, and she looked at me with a serious expression, as if she had another question burning inside her. I allowed her to ask one more question, hoping to bring her some solace. But her next question caught me off guard, leaving me speechless.

"Have you fallen for Alpha yet?" Martha inquired with a grin.

I hesitated for a moment, unsure of how to respond. The truth was, I couldn't deny the attraction I felt towards him, but there were also conflicting emotions that made it difficult to fully embrace those feelings.

"I'm not sure," I replied honestly.

Martha's expression turned incredulous. "What do you mean you're not sure? He's handsome, charming, and has been nothing but kind to you."

I sighed, knowing that my friend wouldn't understand the complexities of my situation. "It's not that simple, Martha. Love is a complicated thing."

But she persisted, eager to hear more about my inner turmoil.
