Chapter 132
The Ghost in the Mirror
Claire hadn’t slept.
Not really.
The moment she closed her eyes, she saw Ava’s smile. Victor’s threat. The footage of Lucas. Her body might have been in bed beside Adrian, but her mind paced an endless hallway of fear, anger, and unanswered questions.
By the time dawn crept over the horizon, she was sitting upright, staring at the city through the glass wall of the penthouse, her arms wrapped tightly around herself. The skyline looked peaceful—deceptively so. But beneath that calm exterior, a war was brewing.
She didn’t flinch when Adrian sat beside her, shirtless, his hair tousled and damp from a shower.
"You didn’t sleep," he said quietly.
"No."
His eyes studied her face, dark and alert despite the early hour. "Neither did I."
Claire didn’t speak. Her mind was still occupied with their son—Lucas. She could still hear his laugh echoing from the last voicemail he’d sent her, telling her about the bunny he saw outside his classroom window. The idea that Victor had eyes on him, that Ava had crossed that sacred boundary, made her stomach twist.
"We can’t keep reacting," she said. "We have to strike first."
Adrian nodded slowly. "I’ve already put surveillance on Ava. We’re monitoring her phone, her movements. Victor’s harder to track, but we’ll find a weak link."
Claire looked at him. "And Cassandra?"
His jaw flexed. "She’s still with them. I don’t know if she’s a prisoner or an ally."
"You think she’d turn on you again?"
Adrian’s silence was answer enough.
Claire sighed. "If she does, I want to be the one to deal with her."
Adrian raised an eyebrow.
"She tried to destroy us. Tried to ruin our marriage before it had even begun. And now she’s back with the enemy? No. I’m not letting her hurt you again."
"You still think she has that power?" Adrian asked softly.
Claire’s gaze dropped. "Maybe not over you. But over your past? Yes."
Adrian didn’t deny it.
The Strategy Room
Daniel arrived two hours later with Gabriel in tow. The mood in the conference room was tense.
"The school’s been secured," Gabriel began. "Lucas has a new protection detail. Unmarked. Discreet. No one goes near him without clearance."
Claire’s shoulders relaxed just enough to breathe.
Daniel laid down a tablet. "And Ava?"
"She’s slipping," he said. "She thinks she’s smarter than everyone, but she’s gotten sloppy. We have audio of her speaking to someone named ‘Rafa.’ He’s a known courier for Victor."
"Can we intercept him?" Adrian asked.
"We already did," Daniel said with a faint smile. "He’s currently enjoying an extended stay in one of Blackwood Security’s safehouses. He’s talking."
Claire leaned in. "And what is he saying?"
"That Ava’s planning something big. A public humiliation. Possibly legal. She mentioned reporters, a courtroom, even judges. She’s digging into your past, Claire."
Claire’s pulse quickened. "She wants to reopen the theft case?"
"Possibly. Or she’s trying to fabricate something worse. Fraud. Embezzlement. If she can paint you as a criminal again, she weakens both of you—personally and professionally."
Adrian stood. "Then we hit her first."
Daniel nodded. "We’ve begun drafting a counterattack. But Victor... he’s the wildcard."
Claire narrowed her eyes. "Then we smoke him out."
A Shadowed Visit
Later that afternoon, Claire walked into the boutique where Ava was known to frequent, dressed in a sleek black suit and heels that clicked like thunder against the marble.
Ava was trying on a necklace when she saw Claire in the mirror.
"Well, well," she murmured, setting the diamonds down. "If it isn’t the runaway bride herself."
Claire didn’t waste time. "Whatever game you’re playing ends now."
Ava turned slowly, looking Claire over. "You know, you’ve changed. Prison looks good on you."
Claire smiled coldly. "And betrayal suits you. But don’t confuse confidence with immunity. You’ve made this personal, Ava. Bringing Lucas into it?"
Ava shrugged. "All’s fair in love and war."
"This isn’t war. It’s survival. And you’re losing."
Ava walked closer, her perfume strong and suffocating. "You think Adrian can protect you from everything? From Victor? From me?"
Claire didn’t blink. "I don’t need Adrian to protect me. I’m not the scared girl you ambushed at the altar. I’m the woman who walked through hell and came out steel."
Ava’s eyes flared. "You still think you’re better than me."
Claire leaned in. "No, Ava. I know I am."
Whispers in the Dark
That night, as Claire returned to the penthouse, her phone buzzed. A message.
Unknown Number: You should have walked away while you had the chance. The game has only just begun.
Attached was a photo.
Of Claire.
From that morning.
Standing alone outside Lucas’s school.
Claire’s fingers went numb.
"Adrian!" she shouted, running into the living room.
He met her halfway, and she handed him the phone.
His expression darkened as he studied the image. "They’re watching you too now."
Claire’s voice shook. "What do they want from us?"
Adrian set the phone down slowly. "Not money. Not power. They want to dismantle everything we are. They want us broken."
Claire sat on the edge of the couch, her breathing shallow.
"I can’t lose him, Adrian. I can’t lose our son."
"You won’t," he said firmly, kneeling before her. "I swear it. I will burn the world down before I let anyone hurt him."
Claire looked at him, and for the first time in days, the mask slipped.
And she let herself fall—into him, into his arms, into the only place that still felt real.
A Plan in Motion
Three days passed.
In that time, Adrian and Daniel orchestrated a coordinated surveillance network across the city. Gabriel handled the decoys—fake appearances by Claire and Adrian to draw Victor’s people out. Information trickled in through multiple sources. Enough for them to begin connecting the dots.
Ava had already filed paperwork for a civil lawsuit.
Defamation.
She was claiming Claire and Adrian had deliberately humiliated her in public. That Claire had stolen family assets and laundered them through Adrian’s companies.
It was laughable—but dangerous.
Because the court of public opinion didn’t care about facts. Only spectacle.
"We’ll counter her," Adrian said. "But we need a bombshell of our own."
Claire looked through the dossier Daniel provided, her eyes locking onto a name.
"Ava’s plastic surgery invoices," she said slowly. "Charged to her late mother’s estate?"
Daniel smirked. "Fraud. And elder abuse, if we spin it right."
Adrian nodded. "Let’s spin it."
The first move had been made—but now, Claire and Adrian weren’t just fighting for survival. They were fighting to reclaim their truth.
And this time, they wouldn’t stop until Ava and Victor were nothing but ghosts of the past.
