Chapter 133
Beneath the Surface
The sound of waves crashing against the shore echoed faintly through Claire’s mind. She wasn’t at the beach, but the stress had her mind conjuring places of peace, serenity she hadn’t known in a long time.
But peace wasn’t an option anymore.
It was war now—and every moment was a strategic move.
She stood by the glass window of the office Adrian had given her in one of his private floors at Blackwood Industries. The city pulsed below her, unaware of the chaos stirring in the lives of its most elite.
"You're quiet today," Daniel said, entering with two cups of coffee. He handed her one and leaned against the edge of her desk.
Claire sipped it, eyes still locked on the skyline. "Just thinking."
"About?"
"Everything." Her voice was low. "Lucas. Ava. The lawsuit. Cassandra. The fact that we’re standing in the eye of a storm and pretending we can control the weather."
Daniel gave a short laugh. "You’ve changed, Claire. The woman I met months ago would’ve cried over her broken image in society. This Claire… she’s thinking about how to take down an empire."
"I don’t want to take down an empire," Claire said. "I want to rebuild mine."
Daniel gave her a look of quiet respect.
She turned to him. "What’s the update?"
"Gabriel just got off the phone with our lawyer. The judge assigned to Ava’s case has a reputation for leaning toward dramatic media spectacles."
Claire grimaced. "So she’s playing to the crowd."
"And winning, if public buzz is any indication," Daniel said. "But we’ve started our own PR initiative. You’ll be appearing on The Society Hour next week."
Claire blinked. "That show?"
Daniel nodded. "We need to remind the public who you really are. Let them see the scars. Let them see the fire."
Claire smirked. "You’re asking me to weaponize sympathy."
"I’m asking you to control the narrative."
She took another sip. "Then let’s start writing it."
Meanwhile, at Blackwood Manor
Adrian sat in his father’s old study, which he rarely visited. It still smelled faintly of cigars and dust, the relics of a man he had long since buried.
But today, he wasn’t there to mourn.
He was there to confront a ghost.
"Did you find the records?" Adrian asked.
His private investigator nodded. "Yes, sir. And… you were right. Cassandra’s finances have been directly tied to a Victor-owned offshore account."
Adrian’s jaw clenched. "How long?"
"Since six months before she showed back up in New York."
That confirmed everything.
Cassandra’s return hadn’t been fate. It hadn’t even been desperation.
It had been strategy.
"And the child?"
The investigator hesitated. "There is no child. We found the clinic records. The pregnancy was fabricated."
Adrian didn’t flinch, but inside, rage boiled.
He’d been manipulated. Again.
But this time, he wouldn’t be blindsided.
He rose from the desk. "Call Daniel. Tell him I want Cassandra taken out of the city. Quietly."
"And if she refuses?"
Adrian looked up, his voice glacial. "Then make her disappear."
The House of Mirrors
That night, Claire walked through the halls of Blackwood Manor alone. Adrian had been gone for hours. And though she trusted him more now than ever, the silence made her anxious.
She paused in front of the portrait gallery, eyes settling on the massive painting of Gregory Blackwood—Adrian’s late father.
There was something cruel in his painted smile. Cold. Judgmental.
"Did you know?" she asked the painting aloud. "Did you know what kind of damage your legacy would cause?"
She stepped closer. "You raised a man who learned to fight his battles with walls and silence. Who had to unlearn everything just to feel love again. You don’t deserve to watch over him."
With that, she turned sharply and left.
But she didn’t see the shadow watching from down the hall.
Face to Face
The next morning, Cassandra Blackwood was escorted into the conference room by two Blackwood security guards.
Claire was already there.
"Cassandra," she said coolly.
Cassandra’s lips curled. "Claire. Still playing queen, I see."
Claire stood, facing her with steel in her spine. "I’m not playing. I am the queen. And you’ve overstayed your welcome."
Cassandra rolled her eyes. "You have no idea what you’re stepping into. Victor has power you can’t begin to understand."
"I don’t need to understand it," Claire replied. "Because when this is over, he won’t have any left."
Cassandra laughed. "You think Adrian will choose you over his own history? You’re just a placeholder, Claire. Temporary. Disposable."
Claire stepped closer. "You’ve always underestimated me. Just like Ava. Just like Victor. And that’s your mistake. Because I’m not just Adrian’s wife—I’m the mother of his son. And I’m not disposable."
Cassandra's smile faltered for a fraction of a second.
Then Adrian entered.
He walked in without a word, his presence cold and commanding. Cassandra turned to him with that familiar, soft smile.
"Adrian," she said. "They’re trying to—"
"I know what you did," he said, voice low and lethal. "The fake pregnancy. The money. The lies."
Cassandra’s eyes widened. "Adrian, I—"
"I gave you the benefit of the doubt. One last chance. You used it to betray me."
She reached for his arm, but he stepped back. "Get out, Cassandra. And don’t come back."
The guards moved toward her, and Cassandra’s composure cracked. "You’re throwing me out for her? After everything we had?"
Adrian looked at Claire, then back at Cassandra.
"There is no 'we' anymore. There hasn’t been for a long time."
Cassandra’s lips trembled, but she said nothing else as she was escorted out.
Silence settled in the room.
Claire stared at Adrian. "Was that hard for you?"
He looked at her. "Yes. But not for the reason you think."
"Then why?"
"Because I used to be the kind of man who believed I deserved someone like Cassandra."
Claire stepped toward him. "And now?"
He looked into her eyes. "Now I know I only want someone who can look into the dark and not flinch. Someone who doesn't run when things fall apart. Someone like you."
They had drawn the battle lines, pushed the traitors into the light, and cast aside the ghosts of their past. But the war wasn’t over. Not yet.
And the next move… would change everything.
