Chapter 46 A new threat unfolds
“How do you…”
Miguel's eyes opened wide like they were going to pop out of his socket but Hazel simply smiled and pointed towards his eyes.
“I don't have to try too hard, it's written right in your eyes”.
She said and he looked at her, surprised.
“That's new, I didn't know sirens could do that”.
He said and she smiled.
“Well, I'm full of surprises, aren't I”?
She asked and he sighed as he nodded.
“So tell me…”
He said, looking at her seriously.
“What did you see in him”?
He asked but he couldn't help but notice that she looked very hesitant to tell him.
“Why are you in such a rush? Let's keep guard, I can always tell you later”.
She said, trying to brush the matter away.
After looking at her for a while, he decided to let it be for now as he would ask her later on.
Hazel wasn't speaking because she had long noticed a raven seated on a tree, just watching them.
It has been there right from when she had arrived and even when she used her siren powers to expose the men, the bird flew due to the effect of her scream, but it didn't go far as it immediately rested back on the tree when the place was settled.
She could already tell it was sent but when she suddenly noticed the bird had it's gaze fixed on her in particular, she finally concluded it was sent by Rave.
If she tells Miguel what she had seen in the rogue, Rave would definitely also get the information and she wasn't ready to do that, even if the information wasn't all so grand.
It was soon dawn and they finally left the border, exchanging shifts with the day guards.
The rogue was also taken and placed in a cell while Miguel left with Hazel.
“Do you want to speak now or do you want to wait till we get to Kael"?
He asked but she kept looking to see if the raven was still following her.
“I'll tell you when we get home, I don't think it's safe to speak now”.
She said and he nodded.
They finally got back to Kael's place and Kael immediately rushed over to Hazel and hugged her tight.
He couldn't bring himself to sleep at all last night because of how worried he was but Hazel was just shocked to see him like this.
“Why are you overreacting? I didn't go to war”.
She said and he pulled away, looking at her so seriously.
“Do you know how worried I was”!
He said and she chuckled.
“I'm not a child Kael. You don't have to be worried about me like I'm some fragile princess”.
She said and he sighed.
“Seems everyone has the same thoughts except me”.
He said and she looked at him with a brow raised.
“Huh”?
She asked but he shook his head.
“It's nothing, did anything happen yesterday"?
He asked and Hazel nodded but then, she walked towards the window and looked right back at the raven that was still standing very close, trying to listen.
“What is that”?
Kael asked but Hazel shook her head.
“I'm not sure, it's been following me since yesterday”.
She said but suddenly, they heard Dona speak.
“It can't hear anything you say inside”.
She said, causing them to turn and look at her.
She gently flashes Miguel a quick smile before bowing to Kael.
“I placed a soundproof magic spell on the house already, unless you want them to hear you or the window is opened, they can't hear anything”.
She said and Hazel nodded as that sounded thoughtful.
“Forgive me for not informing you first”.
She said but they suddenly heard the bird crow heavily, it sounded like it wanted to use its screams to break the glass.
Hazel looked at it and smirked and soon, it flew away.
“Who do you think sent it”?
Miguel asked.
“The best bet is definitely Rave, but I'm not sure”.
She said and went ahead to sit down.
“So… did you get anything from the rogue”?
Miguel asked and Kael looked at him.
“Rogue”?
He asked and looked at Hazel.
“Were you attacked”?
He asked but she shook her head.
“Not me, the border.
Seems they wanted to test the strenght of the warriors in the borders”.
She said and looked at Miguel.
“And to be honest, if I wasn't there last night, they might have won”.
She said and Miguel raised a brow, unsure of what she was talking about.
Yes she was strong but so was he. And all the other warriors at the border were also very strong and well trained.
“What are you talking about? Our men easily took them out yesterday”.
He said and she nodded.
“They were only able to do that because my scream had weakened the men already and neutralized the venom they were supposed to use to take out our men”.
She said but he was totally lost.
“What do you mean by venom”?
Kael suddenly asked and Hazel looked at him.
“When I went into the rogues head, I found out we aren't just fighting against Rave or the dragon pack, we are also up against the vampires”.
She said and Kael's eyes immediately darkened.
“What are you talking about? The vampires are in a completely different space and have not coexisted amongst the werewolves for the longest time”.
He said and she nodded.
“Well, I'm honestly not sure what their deal is. At first, I thought one of Rave's powers was linked to vampires but it wasn't her who fed them the venom, it was someone different, a man”.
She said and Kael sighed.
He didn't like what he was hearing. Battles with vampires were never funny ones.
He has only fought them once before and it wasn't even a war, it was just a collision and to make it worse, the one he fought back then wasn't even one of the strong ones.
“If vampires are part of the equation now, then we are in more mess than we can possibly think”.
