Chapter 70 CHAPTER 70

Chapter 70 CHAPTER 70
When I returned from training, despite feeling fatigued all over, I forced myself to look into the box.

Maybe there's a way to have everything.

But I didn't have much hope for that, my father wouldn't have locked us away from the world otherwise.

But I owed it to myself to figure out that whole puzzle.

So I found a journal where he wrote things he titled The Great War in a large scribble at the top.

I read the book until I fell asleep and when I woke up, there was ink imprinted on my face.

There was no new information from there, except some contradictory information against what we're taught in class.

Which I have come to expect now.

One thing I was sure of though, was that although the wolves are on the right side of this war, they're not really fighting clean.

There's an intentional conditioning of young minds that scared me, white lies, outright lies and sometimes, propaganda that could only point in one direction.

I guess they're doing everything to come back on top.

Right now, vampires hold the upper hand and we're only able to win if we retaliate en masse.

Also, care must be taken to avoid unleashing another bloodlust.

Their King is kind enough to hold onto the virus but it's said he can always redistribute it and turn the world into a blood bath.

Hence why my own people are being desperate, doing anything and everything to regain the upper hand.

Everything I read about this war however, makes it clearer that I can't run away from it, can't have a good life with my soul mate away from this madness.

I must be a part of it.

And I hate that.

Everyone deserves a choice and I'm supposed to be making the vampires choose something or whatever but I don't get a choice myself.

Urgh, I have to stop ranting at myself.

"It's good for self-development," Sabrina chuckled and we prepared for school.

I got downstairs and my guards, sorry, cousins weren't dressed for school.

"What's happening?"

"We're helping Kane to prepare for the party. Will you be coming?"

I was about to answer when a knock came on the door.

I let Edgar get it while I watched from behind the door.

When I realised it was Kael, I stepped out.

"What's wrong? I'm not meant to come in till Friday or Saturday, I think?"

"Alpha Bauer is leaving in the morning so you have to come in now, sorry."

"Right now? You mean they can just come out of nowhere and pick me up?"

"You are loyal to the Council, are you not?"

"I don't have an answer to that. Let them call Aunt Kelly. I'm not leaving here without her approval."

"Come on, Sera. Why are you stressing this?"

"Because who knows if the vampires sent you?"

"Good point," Tori said, standing next to me. "Mum is upstairs. Get him to call her."

Kael sighed and went off to make his call.

I watched in annoyance as he did his thing and came back, right as Aunt Kelly walked down.

"You can go with him, Sera. He just wants to brief you about the completed mission, nothing too important. You'll be back for the party, don't worry."

"You guys are throwing a party?" Kael asked, a little too excited for someone his age.

Okay, I don't know how old he is but still, it's a high school-aged party, he shouldn't look that excited.

"Yes, you wanna come?!" Edgar matched his energy.

"Yes, man. I'll bring this one back right on time."

"For the record, I don't like this," I grumbled as I entered his car.

"None of us does, but we do what we must."

"Who even leads the Council? Like which gives all the orders?"

"There are five elders who make the major decisions. But each state has their branch that looks out for all the Packs in there. Didn't you do wolf government studies?"

"Who knows if they discussed that while you were beating the shit out of me during training?"

"Eh. You've got a point."

There was minimal banter throughout the journey but for the most part, my anxiety kept me quiet until we reached Memphis.

I stepped down and went in, knowing my way now.

The receptionist gave me my black card and I waited for Kael by the elevator.

"You go in, I'll wait out here."

I nodded, my head beating loudly as I got into the elevator.

Pressing the button for the ground floor, I held my breath as it took me down.

When it opened, I held the card out before walking out.

The wolves didn't try to attack me this time.

Still, I walked with caution towards the reception.

"Oh, Sera. He's waiting for you in that office," she pointed to one down the opposite hall, the first door there.

I nodded and walked there, holding my card out for the wolf that was also there.

I knocked and the door was opened almost immediately.

"Sera!" The man who was barely an inch taller than me smiled.

Too brightly.

"Good afternoon, Alpha Baeur. Kael said you wanted to see me earlier."

"Yes, yes. Come in," he ushered me into the office.

It was dark themed with brown curtains and a large oak table in the centre.

He pulled out the seat for me and then went to his own.

"Is there a problem? I thought you wouldn't need to see me until I finished high school?"

"Oh, you worry too much. You should see the Council as well... Your big brother. We're not enemies."

"You threatened to kill me if I didn't kill vampires," I deadpanned.

"Well, you can hardly blame us for that. The moon goddess created you for that sole purpose, quite literally. And with a power like that, it's a blessing and a curse. But don't let this take away the feeling of victory this moment is supposed to bring. You completed your mission and we wanted to reward you for that."

"Reward?"

"Yes. Every person you took out had a bounty on their head and you helped the Council make some extra cash. It's only fitting that you take part in it."

What the hell?

"Who... How are they getting on the list? What list is that even? I thought we were the only enemies of the vampire?".

He laughed deeply.

"Far from it," he said as he wrote a cheque. "But don't bother yourself about all of that. I invited you down here to assign you to your trainers."

"What am I training for?"

"Your purpose of course. Or do you think you can simply walk up to the Vampire King and cut off his head without resistance?"

"I've umm... Never thought that far."

"I know. And things are shifting rather quickly. Faster than we can keep a handle on. So, this will take over your evening training, nothing dramatic that it'll affect your studies and normal life. But I want you to have a head start. When you finish with this phase of your life, then you can go to Russia where everything will kick off properly."

"Russia?"

"Don't worry, everything will make sense soon."

Oh my God, what am I getting into?
