Chapter 58 CHAPTER 58

Chapter 58 CHAPTER 58

"Damn, did I piss you off or something?" Kael asked with a chuckle but I wasn't smiling.

I haven't for the last three days.

Something was pulling me out of this place, tugging at me to get out, like an alarm bell going off in my head but I know I won't be able to get out without finishing this task.

It's why Kael is on the ground right now, shocked for the third time today that I got his ass on the ground.

It wasn't even part of the killing tactics he's been teaching me but my body was moving on autopilot.

"Let's stick to you pulling out my spine for now, okay?"

"The surprise thing?" I frowned.

"Yes. That's the only way to kill your next target."

"Why? Cause girls are stronger?"

"She's older."

"It's just fifty years difference."

"And look how you fared with him. You need to use the element of surprise."

"I don't know if that's possible Kael, I can only get her alone in a hotel room where she does drugs. I'm thinking of going in as room service or something. Every other time, she's with her friends and there are about four of them. You're not training me enough to deal with four vampires."

"So what? You want to fight her directly?"

"What other choice do I have?"

He sighed, my frustration leaking into him.

"Fine. We continue practising combat then."

"I want to go tomorrow."

"Are you nuts? You think because you beat me once or twice today, you can suddenly go and take on a two-hundred-year-old vampire?"

He won't understand why but I just need to get out of here. Sabrina is restless as fuck and I fear it's my fault.

She shifted last night and began running to the portal until I pulled back control.

"I'm ready, Kael. I won't freeze again. I just want to get this over and done with."

"I'm not sure..."

"If I beat you three more times, will you agree?"

"I don't like that tone, too proud," he smirked.

"You agree then? One win for each tactic."

"Fine, each time I beat you though, that cancels out the other."

I roll my eyes but take the challenge.

"Sabrina, if you want us to get out of here, put all your weight on my end and let's get this done," I hissed at my growling wolf.

She complied immediately.

Karl's eyes shifted to black and he ran at me.

I've seen this tactic too many times and I know he's expecting me to dodge so I run towards him instead.

It's a game of chicken and at the last second, I see the shock in his eyes that I didn't back away.

I hit him hard with my body, all the way to the ground while pulling my stake out of the holster around my waist and then I pointed it at his chest.

"Thou art a pile of ashes."

"Oh, so all I needed to get you back to normal was to let you win me?"

I smile a little but he's right, winning this time was exciting.

And that's how the evening went.

He won three times and I won six.

So the next morning, we packed up and headed to Memphis.

While driving through town, a scent caught my attention.

One I refused to believe was truly real even though it was really strong.

Why would Cael Valkori come back to Nashville?

His attempt at kidnapping and killing me didn't work and he ran away but then I remembered the Council predicting he'll be back and it's got me wondering if he was back to finish the job or...

It's wishful thinking but what if the mate bond is working on his end too?

Like I said, wishful thinking. The vampire wants me dead.

My rambling thoughts got caught off when we arrived at the hotel.

It's large, conspicuous and the kind of place a vampire would hide in without ever being caught.

Free food if they have self-control, parties in the club around and the sun is at the back.

Perfect hiding place.

Last night, Kael made me realise he actually had a laptop with active WiFi service in the beach house.

It was a betrayal I had to forgive, again because apparently it's not allowed that he lets me know.

I thought of all the times I could have texted Fabian, but decided to focus on getting the mission set up.

I went to the back and changed into my working clothes, a brown coloured shirt with lots of buttons and the most bland trousers ever.

We picked it up on our way here.

After changing into it, I took the map, strapped my stakes in all the right places and got my mind ready.

"Promise me you won't die?"

I didn't answer Kael, I wasn't enjoying myself and had no atom of humour left in my veins.

The hotel had a back entrance which I used.

Kael had used his Council connections to get me pass cards and all those things you need to avoid being carted off to the police on a mission like this.

I had also watched her routine through the camera in her room throughout the night so I knew when she was going to have her 'dinner' and who was serving her.

Poor girl.

She met me in the elevator and I thought about telling her that the vampire inside there has been draining her every afternoon and compelling her to forget as well as eat food rich in iron, but I didn't.

Instead, I used the syringe Kael gave me and she was fast asleep in seconds.

I checked her pulse to make sure she was sleeping before going out, dragging the cart with me.

I also took her cap, just for the camouflage.

Before I got there, I chewed my leaf, praying she wouldn't take forever to open up.

Thankfully, she seemed to be famished so the moment I rang, the door flung open.

"Who are you?"

"Room service Ma'am," I answered in a patronising tone, pushing the cart of delicious-smelling food in.

"You're not the girl I usually... Have."

"She's a bit busy now. Where do you want it?"

She looked at me, probably wondering what's off with my scent but I don't stand still for her to clock it.

"Eh, you will do," she muttered under her breath before she lunged for my throat.
