Chapter 182 The Three Who Came Before
Chapter 182 The Three Who Came Before
Ivy POV
The place where my mother had stood was empty. The silver mist drifted across the water, quiet and undisturbed, carrying the last traces of the golden light until it disappeared into the distance.
I stood where she had left me, my hand resting against my chest. The ache was still there. Maybe it always would be. But it no longer felt like an open wound. It felt like love.
I drew a slow breath before turning toward Vuk and Veyra. Neither of them had spoken while I said goodbye. They had simply waited, giving me the time I needed.
"Thank you," I said.
The words were simple, but they carried everything I could not put into sentences.
Veyra inclined their head. Vuk offered a quiet smile.
"You didn't just say goodbye," Veyra said. "You finally let yourself grieve."
I nodded. "I think I did."
For years I had mourned the way my mother died. Only now had I been able to celebrate the life she had given me. Silence settled around us again.
It was Vuk who finally broke it."I spent centuries believing I could fix every mistake I made."
His gaze drifted across the endless water.
"Every answer created another problem. Every solution demanded another sacrifice. Somewhere along the way, I stopped asking whether the burden still belonged to me."
His voice carried no pride. Only honesty.
"I built a system that was meant to protect wolves."
He looked at me.
"When it became something else, I convinced myself the answer was to tighten my grip instead of letting go."
I listened without interrupting.
"I told myself I was protecting the future." A tired smile crossed his face."The truth was much simpler."
He looked down at his hands."I was afraid."
The admission hung between us. Afraid.
Not cruel. Not selfish. Just afraid.
"I spent a long time blaming you," I admitted.
"I know."
"I blamed the Founding Line. The Keepers. Every choice that came before mine."
He nodded."You had every right."
I thought about that before shaking my head. "No."
His eyes met mine.
"I had every reason."
A small smile appeared on his face."But reasons aren't the same as being right."
The anger I had carried for so long no longer fit inside me. Looking at him now, I didn't see the man who had created impossible burdens.
I saw someone who had spent centuries trying to repair a mistake he no longer knew how to undo."You did the best you could with what you understood."
His shoulders eased."So did you."
Veyra stepped beside us."The past cannot be rewritten." Their voice was as calm as flowing water."But it can be understood."
They looked toward the silver horizon."I believed balance meant remaining untouched."
Their expression grew distant."I watched from afar because I thought interfering would only make things worse."
Their eyes returned to mine."I forgot that choosing not to act is still a choice."
I remembered everything the wolf world had become. The wars. The hierarchy. The fear.
"The world kept changing," Veyra continued, "and I convinced myself someone else would restore what had been lost."
A faint smile touched their face."In the end, it was never someone else."
"It was us," I said quietly.
Veyra nodded."It always had to be."
None of us spoke for a while. The silence felt peaceful. No lessons remained. No arguments. No burdens waiting to be passed on. Only understanding.
Vuk looked toward me once more."Do you know why the Founding Line truly ends with you?"
I thought of the Charter. The council. The choice we had made to leave the old system behind.
"Because there isn't a place for it anymore."
A smile reached his eyes."Exactly. There will still be mistakes," Veyra said."There always will."
I nodded.
"But they'll be ours."
Neither of them corrected me.That answer seemed to please them. For the first time since entering this strange place, I understood why I had been brought here.
This wasn't about saying goodbye to the past. It was about leaving it where it belonged.
Vuk looked at Veyra."We spent so long trying to carry the world that we forgot it was never ours to keep."
Veyra smiled.
"And now someone else understands what we never did." They both turned toward me."Thank you, Ivy."
The words caught me by surprise. "For what?"
Vuk's smile was gentle."For ending our story before it became someone else's prison."
A warm light began to spread across the silver water. Neither of them looked surprised. They had been waiting for it.
Veyra glanced toward the growing light before looking back at me."One meeting remains."
"The Moon Goddess?" I asked.
They both nodded. Vuk stepped aside, making room for the path of light stretching across the water.
"Go."
His voice carried the peace of someone who had finally laid down a burden."Your journey isn't ending."
A faint smile touched my lips.
"It is finally beginning."
Together, Vuk and Veyra watched as I stepped onto the path filled with light, leaving the past behind and walking toward the last farewell waiting beyond the mist.
