Chapter 145 If He's Not Your Child.
Jessica got home, forcing herself to smile and keep conversations with her son. Jeremy was a lot more chatty than she thought.
Opening the door, she stood there frozen like a statue. The first face she saw, reaching for the door knob from the inside was her husband, Chris.
He stood there too, frozen for a second, eyes looking her up and down.
She felt her heart skip a beat, the man she had forced another man's child on. What would he do to her if he found out the truth about Jeremy? Would he finally kill her? He had always threatened to do so for reasons that were nothing compared to huge secret.
Did she love him enough to fear losing him to the truth? No. She did not care about that. She just did not want to get embarrassed and she was afraid of what he might to do her. Obviously something worse than a divorce.
"What are you doing just standing there?" Chris' voice was a little relaxed compared to his usual sternness whenever he spoke with her.
His voice cut her out from her thought and she batted her lashes, feeling flustered. "Huh? Well I was just... I was going in. What about you? Why are you just standing there?"
"Come in if you are coming in and don't try to put the blame on me." He said, moving away from the exit and returning to the living room.
She followed. Rather hesitantly. Her eyes watched as he went to sit down on the sofa. She knew he wanted to discuss with her. Heaving a sigh, she hugged Jeremy closer to her chest and went to sit down on the seat adjacent to his.
Her eyes flickered around the place nervously like it was somewhere she had never seen before. Her hands clung onto her son like she never wanted to let go.
Chris' eyes never left her body. Even as he spoke. "I saw Jeremy's caretaker and asked about him, she told me you took her job from her." There was a coolness to his tone that made Jessica feel unsettled.
She sat on the edge of her seat, back straightened and knees pressing together. "Oh yeah, I did. Uhm... My son and I-- we barely get to spend time together so I wish to draw closer to him. He's just a baby now but he will remember it when he grows up if I am a bad mother."
Chris let out a scoffed laugh. "Tch... When did you start caring about things like that?" His thick brow arched.
"What?" She let out a nervous chuckle. "I have always cared for my son, I have just been busy lately. But not anymore, my time will be devoted to caring for him so he can turn out as a good boy when he is older."
"How can you give what you don't have?" His voice was cold.
Jessica stiffened. "What?"
Sarah walked in just then, a smile split her smooth face. "Oh! Is that my grand baby? It has been a while since I saw you last." She took Jeremy from Jessica's hands without asking. "Your mother is always hiding you from me, you love me right?"
"Yeah!" Jeremy exclaimed.
Sarah chuckled, her heart full of joy. "Oh! Grandma loves you too." She turned to look at Jessica. "I'm taking him out for ice cream. Then we are going to the children's park. We won't be back until later at night. Don't wait for us."
Jessica rose to her feet. "I'm not against him having fun but I think he should rest today. Besides, we already had ice cream a while ago."
"No it's fine," Chris chimed in, still remained seated. "I want to talk to you anyway so let them go out. I need the house alone with you."
"Oh you naughty couple!" Sarah exclaimed with a soft chuckle. "There's a baby here-- oh my goodness. Tsk tsk tsk... A man will always have desires no matter what." She turned around and walked out of the house with Jeremy in her arms.
"But-- but--" Jessica stuttered, wanting to go after then. A sigh escaped her mouth. Why was she so soft for no reason? Her mind was not in the right place at the moment.
She had to deal with Jayden first and quickly for her confidence to return.
Even without her confidence though, her pride still remained. She turned to face Chris, fire burning in her gaze. "What did you mean by what you said? You can't give what you don't have? What does that mean?"
"Am I wrong? You're a bad person, but you want to raise a good kid? Ha! You make me laugh."
"I'm a bad person?" She scoffed a laugh and folded her arms underneath her breast. "If I'm considered to be a bad person then what does that make you? The devil himself?"
Chris let out a soft laughter. "That's not what I'm here to discuss with you anyway. I want to talk about custody."
Jessica's eyes squinted. "Custody?" Confusion hinted at her tone.
He nodded his head. "Custody. After we divorce, I want to keep Jeremy, he is my son after all."
She broke out in a hysterical laugh, clapping her hands. "Oh you make me laugh. So that's what you meant by custody. My son stays with me, besides, I haven't agreed to the divorce."
"I'm not making a request here," he said, rising to his feet. "I'm giving an order. You are no longer a wife to me but my child will always be my child--"
"And if he's not your child?" The words poured from her mouth before she even realized it.
Chris' eyes squinted. "What?"
Her hands fell to her side, realizing what she had just said. Why would she let her anger get the best of her? How was she to change what she had said now?
"What did you just say?" Chris questioned, taking a step towards her.
She swallowed.
