Chapter 70 Another one

Chapter 70 Another one

Lucas's POV

Now he has called Parker's phone immediately after he got the number.

“Isn't that Patrick's phone ringing in your possession?” He points at the phone.

“What are you doing with Parker's phone, and where is he? You got yours, don't you? Is there something you're not telling me?” He asked me in a different tone.

It's remarkable how he managed to switch characters so quickly.

“Parker is my brother, remember? The bond we share permits us to access each other's stuff. You're not a stranger to us. I don't need to explain this to you before you understand,“ I set the record straight.

“I see,” Mark nodded after a close-up stare at me.

I couldn't tell if my explanation was enough to grant my safe passage.

“You two were so fond of each other in school. You were more like the twins' your parents never had,” Mark comes with yet another strategy to delay me.

But this time, I refused to fall for his tricks. I already know where this conversation is leading to.

“Can I leave now? I have got to be at an important place right now and you're slowing me down,” I requested.

He's beginning to bore me with his long talks. If he could read meanings into situations, he would understand that I am not in the mood to have this talk with him.

“I am afraid you can't leave now,” Mark rejected my request.

He insisted that I step down from the car, “I need to conduct a search on this car. That's the only way you can be allowed to leave,”

“Is this a joke?” I scoffed. “Please tell me this is a prank because I don't even find it funny,”

“How did we get here? We were cool a while ago so what's this about?” I snarled.

He's showing me a version of him that I haven't witnessed before.

“I'm only doing my job, Parker. You are in no position to dictate to me. Are we clear?” he claimed.

Just when I thought it wouldn't get any worse, he summoned another cop via his walkie-talkie. “Sheriff Maurice, we have a very critical situation. I need you to come right here to sort this out,”

“Mark, you cannot be doing this. We are friends. I really need to be out of here this minute,” I lowered my tone.

He snubbed me. He wasn't even looking in my direction. To him, I don't even exist.

I was startled. It just dawned on me that Mark meant every damn word he said.

In a few minutes, a cop showed up, suspected to be Sheriff Maurice that Mark called via his walkie-talkie.

“What's the issue, Mark?” He asked Mark. “You've been on this vehicle for too long. Is he giving you problems that you can't handle?”

Right before me, Mark whispers to the ears of the sheriff while I make a move to watch and ponder on what they're up to.

I didn't bother asking either. I just wanted to get the fuck out of this place.

“Sir, we need you to step down and open the door of your car,” Sheriff Maurice commanded me.

“Why do I need to do that? It doesn't make any sense to me. Are you aware that this is a public assault? You could get sued for it,” I played the smart game.

Still, it wasn't enough to get them off my trail. They threatened to arrest me on the spot if I kept on being stubborn.

“I am not hiding anything suspicious. I already explained this to Mark,” I defended myself.

I try not to make the mistake of leaving my car. That will be falling on their trip.

“Don't complicate it for you, sir.
You're making me lose my patience.” Sheriff pulled out his gun just when I thought he would be a bit gentler with me.

“Alright, I will. There's no need to get violent,” I surrendered to their command.

It's two against one. I can never be a match for them. It's a lonely road. They could kill me on the spot and have me buried in a shallow grave.

“But can you please put the gun away? It's scaring me,” I begged Maurice before to avoid being a case of an accidental discharge.

First, I took off my seatbelt. Slowly, I paid attention to them. When I noticed they were a bit distracted, I started the car and drove at full speed.

In the process of trying to escape, I ran into a cop who tried to stop me. I didn't bother stopping to confirm if he was dead.

I glared at the side mirror and noticed some spill of blood on the ground.

It could only mean one thing; I failed to wipe out Parker's blood from the booth. It may have just exposed me.

Mark had observed the blood leaking from my booth and instructed me to come down. He knew I'd storm off if he had told me.

I stopped by a secluded area and opened the booth to wipe the blood thoroughly using my clothes. I didn't care if I ended up being shirtless.

If that's what it requires to evade arrest, I am willing to go completely nude.

“This is the shit I'm referring to,” I said to myself after a satisfactory cleaning.

I sprayed the car with deodorant to eliminate the bad smell that was caused by Parker's corpse.

There's no guarantee that I won't have another encounter with some cops ahead of me.

I returned to the car and gulped from the plastic water next to my seat.

I turned on the air conditioner to cool off my head.

I wasn't done resting when I noticed the cops trailing me from behind.

They brought out their megaphones, screaming at me to surrender to them now.

I was confused about what to do. This wasn't the happy ending I wished for myself.

I thought meeting Mark would be a blessing. I had no idea that he was my Waterloo.

My problem started when I agreed to get to know him. Had I known I'd find myself in this mess, I would have rejected him.

Now I'm stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea.

Jace POV

“Why were you planning to kidnap my daughter through Jessie?” Kingston confronted Douglas.

I have waited for this moment all my life. I'm eager to find out how Douglas will deny the allegations.
