Chapter 71 Precautionary Measures
Chapter 71 Precautionary Measures
Jace POV
“Kidnap your daughter? What the hell are you talking about, sir?” Douglas denied immediately, just like I predicted.
“Who is feeding you lies about me? This is insane. I need to speak with that person right now,” Douglas fumed.
It's his audacity to lie with a straight face. I am aware that he's a jerk.
But with this manner of attitude? Douglas might be cunning and more dangerous than Adolf Hitler.
“What did you say to him, you snitch? I'm pretty sure you're behind this.“ Douglas attacked me while ignoring the question he was asked.
He was staring at me as though he wanted to devour me to his satisfaction.
Even in cuffs, Douglas is still dreadful. He'd definitely rip my soul apart if I made the mistake of getting closer to him.
“Quit the silly attitude, Douglas, and answer the damn question. You'd be doing yourself no good by proving smart. The odds are against you now,” I clapped back at him.
“I am not responsible for your predicament. Stop pretending to be innocent because we both know you aren't,” I put him in his place. I gave him no chance to demonstrate his dominance over me.
“You dare lie against me and pretend to be a saint? How do you even sleep at night?”
“Peacefully, Douglas,” I retorted. “You know why? I am not a murderer like you,”
“Where is your evidence to prove that I really wanted to kidnap his daughter?” Douglas dared me.
He might be digging his grave without even knowing. He thought he would outsmart me on this one.
He has absolutely no idea that I have a backup plan. I didn't retaliate or return the same energy he used on me.
Rather, I brought out my phone and played the voice recording of our conversation where he threatened to wipe my entire family, should I refuse to assist him in kidnapping Amira.
“Remind me whose voice is that again?” I flaunted the phone to his face.
“Or was the voice doctored to frame you up?” I mock him with wicked laughter.
He was perplexed. I can tell from his facial expressions that he has accepted the defeat already. He felt that in his thick skin.
“I'd leave you to pick up from where you left,” I told Kingston, and stepped aside for a moment. I want to assume that he has a lot to say to Douglas.
He's directly involved in this case as much as I am. The last time I checked, it's his daughter who was kidnapped and not my mind. I have rescued Jessie, and that's what matters to me.
“I need you to confess all your crimes to me now without leaving no stone unturned,” Kingston demanded.
That was fast. I never thought he'd use that approach on Douglas.
He is so unpredictable. He popped the question like he had been secretly undergoing training on how to become a sheriff.
“You wish, Kingston. Your rage is ineffective on me. Jace can explain better” Douglas giggled.
He refused to utter more words until he spoke with his lawyer.
Kingston was furious as he hit the wall to express his anger. Douglas's response just limited him to what he could have done.
I am not surprised that Douglas has an attorney. That explains why he's been in and out of prison on many occasions. It shows that his lawyer is doing an impressive job.
"Do you mind if we swap contacts for the purpose of this case?” I went to speak with Romeo.
“I want to be kept abreast of the first court hearing. I cannot wait to testify against him. I am more dedicated to this case than ever before. He doesn't deserve to be seen among humans,” I buttressed.
“That's not a problem. No one will stop you from getting involved,” Romeo granted my request without a second thought.
I dialled the number right in front of him to be sure if it was real.
Romeo might be acting nice to me in recent times, but I still don't trust him enough.
“Thank you once again,” I shook hands with Romeo after confirming the phone number he gave to me. .
Without speaking to anyone further, I grabbed Jesse's arm and walked out on everyone like an accomplished soldier that just conquered an army.
“Where are you going?” I heard Kingston calling me.
I chose not to respond. He is the last person I want to have a conversation with right now.
This sight of him irritates me right now, and I don't want to do anything silly to him, especially when I haven't left the station yet.
“Wait, it's late. It can be very dangerous out there. Consider the safety of your kid brother,” Kingston called me again.
His voice was louder than the previous time, yet I chose not to respond. He's very irrelevant to me right now.
“Someone is calling you. Didn't you hear him?” Jessie called my attention to Kingston running behind us like a marathon race.
Instantly, I cautioned Jessie to stay out of this. He's far too young to understand what's going on, and I'm not ready to explain to him either.
“Hey,” I felt someone grab my arm from behind. “I know you heard me,”
I knew it was Kingston even without checking to confirm.
“Why can't you just let me be? Haven't you done enough?” I poured out my anger at him. I proved to him that I am not scared of him any more.
“Why are you avoiding me like a plague? Let me drop you off at home. It's not safe out there,” he suggested. He was so passionate about wanting to assist me.
I looked around and saw the darkness that was hovering around the dark clouds.
It will be a miracle to find a cab heading home. I nearly lost Jessie when he was whisked away by Douglas.
I won't forgive myself if anything bad happens to him again.
I don't want to accept Douglas's offer. At the same time, I want to guarantee Jessie's safety.
And the only way I can make that happen is by using Kingston's car as a means of transportation home.
