Chapter 28 HIDDEN CURRENTS
Godiva's POV
He stared at me intently, then brought out his tongue mockingly.
And I knew I was just overthinking. Jerald would never kiss me and behave this childish.
I was taken aback the second I sighted Jerald walking out of the pathway, headed toward where I was seated, with his shirt hung across his shoulder.
I never for once imagined his body to look half as hot as it looked. He had broad, healthy muscles and abs, safe to say the dream body of every girl.
I slapped myself back to reality as I watched him sit right beside me. At first, I wanted to pretend I was unaware of his presence, before I suddenly remembered I owed him one for the hangover drink he sent through Dina.
“Thanks for the drink,” I said reluctantly, flipping my hair and still fixing my gaze on the boys playing.
“If you wanna say thank you, at least be a little sincere,” he replied, turning my head his direction.
“Thank you, Jerald,” I screamed, prostrating before him, drawing the attention of people around.
“What the hell?” he said, jumping up in shock. I couldn’t stop laughing at the manner he sprang up from the chair when I screamed.
“When we go back to Mavick city, you better go get yourself checked in a psychiatry,” he advised as he walked toward the boys’ hostel.
Stopping abruptly and turning to me, he said, “Don’t go nowhere, wait a little for me to get changed.”
For some reason, I found the manner of approach, the command, and his way of exerting authority sexy.
I quickly called myself to order. If we returned to Mavick city, Liz would literally hunt me down and kill me if I even so much as thought of snatching her boyfriend.
I knew the danger in it, but something in me liked being in the middle of the drama.
My breasts were itchy and giving me some subtle pleasure when I thought of fighting Liz over Jerald and snatching her betrothed.
I slapped myself back to reality as I laughed out loudly.
I watched Jerald as he walked to the hostel in his usual elegant manner, his back a little sweaty and even more attractive. I was lost in the moment, admiring him, when someone tapped me on my shoulder in a creepy manner.
“Jeez!” I exclaimed in panic, turning back to see Hakeem revealing his not so pretty dentition.
“What is wrong with you?” I barked aggressively at him.
“Why were you lusting over my friend? I can’t let him get entangled in your sorry lifestyle,” Hakeem said, still smiling.
I ignored him and returned my gaze to the boys playing football.
“I didn’t know you were a drunkard,” Hakeem whispered in my ears and burst out laughing.
I swiftly pressed my palms over his mouth, looking around to make sure nobody heard him. “What’s wrong with you!” I snapped at him.
“I don’t want to hear this from anybody.”
“Your secret is safe with me. Don’t you have any question to ask about last night?” he teased as he winked at me and walked away.
Watching him walk away, I clenched my teeth and tried so hard to fight the loud scream I was about to let out.
“How did I end up kissing a school mate, not even Jerald, but Hakeem, my nemesis?” I thought to myself.
Jerald returned a few minutes after Hakeem left. He put on a blue Nike with a jogger and vest, which exposed his manly muscles.
“Why did you put on a similar outfit as me?” I teased Jerald, who was yet to sit. He grinned and sat beside me.
“Let’s take a stroll back to that weird river,” he said, smiling.
“You can’t call going to that river a stroll, it is a complete journey we are embarking on,” I added as we both laughed loudly, causing people to stare.
The stroll started with an awkward silence. We were just counting our steps and keeping mute.
“I didn’t see you at the fest yesterday,” I broke the silence.
“Yeah, I was dealing with personal stuffs, so I needed time away from everyone,” he replied.
“I heard what happened between Leo and you, the boys didn’t stop talking about it,” he continued.
“Let’s forget all of that, please,” I said, downcast.
“I wished I was there to spice up the drama,” he said, laughing aloud.
“I guess you’re having fun mocking my situation,” I replied coldly.
“I’ve always thought you’re too pretty for a guy like Leo,” Jerald beckoned, patting me on my back.
I never knew words could be comforting until those words came out from Jerald’s lips. He knew the exact words to inflict pain and equally lessen pain.
“You need to be careful with your next dating decision. I wouldn’t always be there to protect you,” Jerald said, a little serious.
Those words were supposed to be comforting, but strangely, hearing them from Jerald made me a little sad. I turned to him with a light and obviously fake smile.
Arriving at the river, it was unusually quiet. Maybe it was because it was already evening. We both heaved a sigh of relief as we sat on a rock directly facing the stream.
For minutes, we were silent, enjoying the peace that came with staring at the water body in front of us, which kept on swirling from left to right as the wind blew.
Something was bothering me and I needed to use this opportunity to find out.
“Do you really love Lis?” I asked out of the blue. I could see the shock on Jerald’s face after I asked the question.
For a minute, I got no reply, and my heart panicked. I was about asking again when he spoke up in his deep voice.
“Why you asking?”
“No… nothing,” I stammered and looked away as I picked a stone from where we sat and aimed at the river.
“You are a very pathological liar, and it’s written all over your face.”
“Speak up!” he urged.
