Chapter 98

Chapter 98
Ruby

I'm old and grey now, Rowan and Owen are still glowing, they haven't aged a day in all these years we have been married. Damien is old now too just like me, us wolves we take longer to age, but we eventually do.

“Baby I've been calling you.” Owen interrupts my thoughts as I'm sitting at the pouch admiring the sunset. He stands behind me, leans a bit and hugs me from behind. He kisses my saggy cheeks. I pull away, I don't feel confident anymore, it could have been better if we had aged together.

“Are you alright baby.” He asks coming in front of me, he kneels on one knee and takes my hand in his.

“I'm fine, Owen.” I simply say.

“Please tell me what's bothering you, my angel.” He asks, his ruby eyes staring deep into my soul. He almost brings me to tears, I can clearly see the love he has for me in his eyes. It has never faded in fact, it increased with time. My old heart swells in sadness because anytime now I might leave them. I feel so bad, I regret not reconsidering turning into a vampire. But I really wanted to live my life the way I was supposed to. I wanted to age and die peacefully, I'm happy they didn't force me.

“I'm really sorry for not turning into a vampire, I wouldn't have aged. I wouldn't have been old and haggard like this, Owen. I'm so sorry, I'm going to leave you soon." I say looking at him. I love my mates so much and the thought of leaving them hurts me deeply and my children too. They also stopped aging moment they hit eighteen. They are almost seventy now but they look the same as they were when they were eighteen. I'm glad atleast my mates won't be completely alone, a part of me through my children will always be with them.

I knew this time will come but it seems so soon.

Owen doesn't answer me instead he looks away for a moment, sighs then looks back at me, holding my hand even tighter he says, "I know baby, I want to go with you, but I can't. I wish there was a way for me to come with you, my angel. I wouldn't have thought twice." a tear escapes his eyes and I wipe it.

Come to think of it, it's Owen whom I've been closer with comparing with Damien and Rowan.

“Don't forget me baby when I leave, and don't be too sad either okay.” I say, placing my hand on his cheek. He looks like my great-grandson now and not my mate. Occasionally, it troubles me, but he has never made me feel any less of his mate.

“Never, I will never forget you. I'm going to pray to your goddess each and every day to bring you back to me, Ruby, I swear.” He smiles weakly, I can see how he is struggling to be strong. "Because I don't know how I will live without you my mate." this time he completely breaks down. He places his head on my lap and I pat his back repeatedly as he sniffles.

“Take me inside, please, and call Rowan.” I ask when he completely comes down. I need to lie down, my back feels so stiff. He scoops me in his arms and I wrap my hands around his neck and lay my head on his chest. He feels so warm, his scent so intoxicating as always. I don't think we have had enough time together.

“I love you.” I say to him. Somehow it feels like it's the last I will tell him.

“And I love you, baby always.” He answers, kissing my forehead. His heart is beating so fast, he clearly knows that our time is up. In my next life I would love to be born as his mate, I wish to be born with a longer lifespan. “I'll be back in a short while.” He smiles placing me carefully on the bed., I think it's the last smile I'll see of him. I'm grateful of the love he gave me and all my mates as well. Atleast the last image I have of him is smiling.

I remember Zama my good friend, she died eventually in jail, My mother and father as well. They died in old age though. Lincoln never talked to me again after Zama was arrested, he even left the pack. So much happened, I couldn't follow my dreams, my mates were enough for me. I didn't think I had anything more to ask for from the goddess. All I can say is I'm grateful for my life. It has been amazing.

Third person’s POV

Owen gets out of their room, tears dripping down uncontrollably down his cheeks. He tried to hold them in to no avail, after his whole life revolved around Ruby, it's about to come to an end. He doesn't know how his life will be without her.

He leans on the wall right outside their room, let's his tears flow before heading to call Rowan who is in a meeting concerning the realms.

As he is descending the stairs he meets Rowan half way running towards him. His eyes bloodshot.

“What is it?” Owen asks.

“She is gone.” He says running past Owen, that's when it dawns him, Ruby is gone. He teleports to their room where he had left her lying down and the lack of a heartbeat confirms it. Ruby lies on the bed, her body stiff, her eyes closed. Even in that state, she looks beautiful.

Owen collapses on the floor, Rowan stands mute not believing what has happened and Damien takes forever to get to the room. He goes straight for her hand.

“I'll come soon, my love, you won't be alone for long.” He says kissing her knuckles. In a span of one week, Damien follows Ruby. Rowan and Owen are left with the children.
