Chapter 72

Chapter 72
Marcello pov

The darkness seemed to swallow everything whole, but I stood tall, my resolve burning like a fire. I would not be defeated. I would not be denied.

Lyra would be mine again, no matter the cost.

I stepped out of the dimly lit room, the cool evening air enveloping me like a refreshing embrace, a stark contrast to the stifling atmosphere I had just escaped. The muted sounds of the night—distant leaves rustling and the soft hoot of an owl—seemed to mock my turmoil. My godfather's sudden appearance was like a slap in the face; his calm demeanor was a sharp contrast to the chaos swirling in my mind.

"Marcello, what's going on?" he inquired, his voice smooth as silk, as if he were discussing mundane matters over coffee rather than confronting a crisis. His eyes, sharp and penetrating, seemed to dissect me in the fading light, searching for the hidden truths I was struggling to articulate.

A surge of anger rose within me, and my words tumbled out in a frantic rush, each syllable infused with desperation. "Lyra's gone! She's not in her cell, she's not in the house...I don’t know where she is!" My voice cracked slightly, underscoring the panic that coursed through my veins.

Despite my distress, my godfather’s expression remained inscrutable, a mask of calm that only heightened my frustration. The faint glint in his eyes suggested he was harboring secrets I was not privy to. "I know," he stated, his voice laced with an infuriating serenity, as if he were delivering a well-rehearsed line rather than dealing with a potential disaster.

My thoughts reeled, spinning in frantic circles as I struggled to process his words. "You know? What do you mean?" I demanded, my voice rising with an edge of disbelief. The air crackled between us with unspoken tension, the shadows around us seeming to grow heavier.

He smiled, a small, enigmatic expression that only further fueled my frustration, as if he were in on a joke I wasn’t meant to understand. "I mean," he replied slowly, allowing each word to sink in, "she's not missing, Marcello. She's exactly where she's supposed to be." The certainty in his tone sent a chill down my spine as the implications of his words hung in the air, heavy with foreboding.

I felt a sickening jolt, as if someone had punched me square in the gut, the air escaping my lungs in a rush. My heart raced, pounding furiously against my ribcage. “What are you talking about?” I spat, my voice sharp with anger. “She’s not in her cell. She’s not in the house... where the hell is she?”

My godfather's chuckle echoed in the dimly lit room, a low, throaty sound that only stirred the simmering rage inside me. “Calm down, Marcello. She’ll be back. And when she is, you’ll understand.”

Understand? Understand what? My mind raced, spinning with questions like a whirlwind, and I felt as though I was trapped in a maze with no way out, each turn more frustrating than the last. “What’s going on?” I demanded, my voice raw and strained, each word laced with desperation. “What do you know that I don’t?”

But my godfather merely lifted an eyebrow, an infuriating smile curling at the corners of his mouth, the glint in his eyes hinting at some secret joke that I wasn’t privy to. He turned on his heel, his footsteps echoing down the corridor, leaving me in a storm of anger and confusion, my thoughts tangled in a web of uncertainty.

I stood there, rooted in place, a tempest of frustration swirling within me. My heart raced as a torrent of questions bombarded my mind. What secrets did my godfather hold? Why was he keeping them from me? Each moment felt like an eternity, and I couldn’t shake the sensation that I was losing my grip on reality, as if the world around me was spiraling beyond my control.

But in the midst of that chaos, a flicker of determination ignited deep within me. I wouldn't let this mystery consume me. I would delve into the shadows surrounding Lyra's disappearance, unearthing the truths that lay buried beneath layers of silence and hesitation. I vowed to confront my godfather and coax out the answers I needed. I would hunt down every lead, interrogate every witness, and pursue any clues—no matter how faint. I was resolved to ensure that whoever was responsible for this heartbreak would face justice. The stakes were too high for me to stand by and do nothing; I was ready to fight for the truth, for Lyra.

I pulled out my phone and dialed a number, waiting for the person on the other end to pick up. When they did, I wasted no time on pleasantries.

"Keep an eye on Rebekah," I said, my voice low and urgent. "Something isn't right."

There was a pause on the other end of the line, and then a voice spoke up. "What's going on, Marcello?"

"Lyra's gone," I replied, my jaw clenched. "And my godfather seems to know more than he's letting on. I  want Rebekah caught off guard."

The voice on the other end of the line nodded, even though I couldn't see them. "Consider it done. I'll make sure she's safe."

I nodded, even though they couldn't see me either. "Good. Keep me updated."

I hung up the phone, my mind racing with possibilities. What was going on with Lyra? And what did my godfather have to do with it? I was determined to find out.

As I stood there, lost in thought, I heard a noise behind me. I turned to see one of my guards approaching me, a look of caution on his face.

"What is it?" I asked, my voice still low and even.

"It's about the guards who lost Lyra, sir," he replied, his voice hesitant. "They're...they're not talking."

I raised an eyebrow. "Not talking?"

The guard shook his head. "No, sir. They're refusing to say anything about what happened to Lyra. But...but I think I might know something."

I leaned forward, my interest piqued. "What is it?"
