CHAPTER 15
ABBY POV.
“RUN!” He yelled as he quickly glanced at me. I immediately scooted backward before stumbling to my feet. I ran for the front of the house as fast as I could, but it felt as though I was spinning in one spot. A scream escaped my throat when a man jumped into my path in front of the steps to the house and I slid over the grass as I tried to stop. Just by looking at him, I could see that he was friendly. He was bald and had a hand full of scars across and he was looking at me with a malicious grin on his face. His clothes were torn and he was covered in blood. It made him even more menacingly looking. I leaped to my feet and ran the other way. Away from him and noticed his smile widening and my fear spiked up a new level. My chest filled with panic when I heard laughter behind me. I quickly glanced behind me. The man was taking his time coming down the steps, his eyes fixated on me. There were wolves there as well but they all stood and looked at me as I ran, licking their lips as they watched me try to get away. Just as I reached the first tree, a howl pierced the air, bringing me to a stop. I knew I shouldn’t be stopping but I needed to catch my breath and I looked around. Where the man previously stood, there was a wolf now. A large ass black wolf and he had eyes just for me… and not just him but others too took an interest. WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING? RUN DAMNIT! My thoughts echoed those words loudly in my ears and I turned and ran through the trees. A few seconds later the sound of paws met my ears.
I can’t stop! I have to keep running! I said to myself as I tried to not trip over my own feet. My heart was pounding. My lungs were burning, and my knees were aching, but I couldn’t slow down. I couldn’t! or they would get me. Keep running. Keep running! I chant to myself over and over again. I have to keep running. I have to stay ahead of the wolves who are practically snapping at my heels. I can hear them growling, their paws hitting the ground, nails digging into the dirt. I don't know how much longer I can keep this up, but I have to keep going or they will tear me apart.
I knew I should not have, but I made the mistake of looking back again. I looked over my shoulder to see how close they were and then I tripped, landing with a hard thud as my head hit the dirt-covered forest floor. I bite back the scream of pain, both from my head and my leg. A quick touch to my forehead revealed blood on my fingers and I swallowed down the nausea that was bubbling up from fear. I didn’t like the sight of blood, not mine nor others. A growl reminded me of my situation and I whipped around on the ground, sitting on my ass in the dirt and staring up into a pair of golden eyes. There were four of them… no five… I think. I couldn’t think as my mind was starting to run into panic mode and was becoming dizzy. The wolves moved in around me, caging me in, crouched down, pawing the ground and ready to attack, growling, snapping their jaws at me. The biggest of the lot was a large black wolf. His eyes locked directly into mine and for a moment I could almost see something human in them.
This was it. I thought to myself as I swallowed audibly. This was it. This was how I was going to die. I took another shaky breath and closed my eyes. Waiting for the first to attack.
NO! This was not the way I was going to die. I said to myself as I felt a shot of adrenalin start to pump the blood through my body and I started to feel hot. My eyes shot open to look the black wolf in the eyes. I grabbed a stick that lay close to me and I stood up. The black wolf’s head shoots up in surprise and for a moment he glances at the others before he starts to snarl at me and advancing on me again. What surprised me, was that the others didn’t follow their leader, in fact, they had taken a step back. My eyes focused on the main wolf again and I brought up the stick to hold it in front of me protectively. I smelled the dirt as he angrily pawed the ground. His ears twitched and the sound of more thundering paws bounced off the trees. His wolf friends looked around wildly before turning and running the other way, clearly scared of who was coming and that made me feel a bit better because that meant that it must be help that was on its way. Just then, the black wolf leaped towards me.
