CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHT
CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHT
Winter's POV
The next morning dawned grey and overcast, matching the unease simmering in the air. I barely slept, and judging by Damon’s dark-circled eyes, neither had he. The coffee he held was untouched, forgotten in his hand as he stared out the window, lost in thought.
Kai’s footsteps pitter-pattered down the hallway, a reminder that life, no matter how precarious, had to keep moving. Damon’s gaze softened when Kai ran into the room, holding his favorite stuffed dinosaur.
“Dad, can we play today?” Kai’s voice was hopeful, his innocence a stark contrast to the tension in the room.
Damon set his coffee on the table and crouched down to Kai’s level. “Not right now, buddy, but soon. Okay?”
Kai pouted but nodded, shuffling off toward the playroom. Damon stood and turned back to me, his expression hardening again.
Hours later, Damon’s phone buzzed, breaking the uneasy silence between us. He grabbed it immediately, his voice low and tense as he answered.
“Yeah?” His jaw tightened as he listened. “You’re sure?”
I moved closer, trying to read his expression. When he hung up, his face was grim.
“That was Coach James. Eric’s been spotted near the old gym downtown.”
“What? What’s he doing there?”
Damon shook his head. “Probably desperate, trying to get money or hide out. James thinks he’s been hanging around to find people to back him up.”
Fear prickled at the edges of my mind. “You’re not going there alone, are you?”
Damon’s eyes met mine, steady and determined. “No. The police are already on their way. But I need to be there, Winter. I need to see this through.”
My chest tightened. “Damon…”
He stepped closer, cupping my face gently. “I’ll be careful. But I can’t let him keep running wild. Not when he’s a threat to you and Kai.”
I wanted to argue, to beg him to stay, but the fire in his eyes told me there was no point. Damon had already made up his mind.
The wait for news felt like a lifetime. I busied myself with Kai, trying to keep him entertained while my thoughts spiraled. The idea of Eric being caught should have been a relief, but it only deepened my anxiety.
What if he had a plan? What if he had people helping him? The possibilities were endless, and each one more terrifying than the last.
Finally, just as the sun dipped below the horizon, Damon’s car pulled into the driveway. He stepped out, looking weary but unharmed.
I met him at the door, my heart pounding. “What happened?”
“They found him,” Damon said, his voice heavy with exhaustion. “Eric’s in custody. He put up fight, and got far before they could catch him.”
My shoulders dropped and all the semblance of peace I had managed to achieve shattered in one moment.
Damon placed his hands on my shoulders, grounding me. “It’s not over yet. He’ll get arrested and face charges, but for now we’ll need to be ready in case he tries anything through someone else.”
I nodded, swallowing the lump in my throat. “At least he’s going to lay low for some time”
That night, for the first time in what felt like weeks, I allowed myself to relax. Damon stayed close, his presence a reassuring reminder that we’d faced the worst and come out on the other side.
As we sat together on the couch, Damon reached for my hand. “We’ll get through this, Winter. I know it doesn’t feel like it, but we’re stronger than this.”
I looked at him, the weight of the past few days reflected in his eyes. “I know. And I’m not going anywhere.”
His grip on my hand tightened, and for a moment, the chaos outside our door felt like a distant memory. Together, we were unbreakable.
The storm is coming, I feel the pull,
A silence hanging, dark and full.
The winds are soft, but I know they lie,
For soon enough, the clouds will cry.
The quiet before the thunder’s roar,
A moment’s peace we can’t ignore.
It’s in this stillness that we see,
The edge of what’s meant to be.
Our hearts are racing, yet we stand,
Uncertain, waiting, hand in hand.
Will the storm break us apart,
Or bind us closer, heart to heart?
The calm before the world unravels,
It’s where we choose the paths that travel.
Do we fight it, or let it flow,
And trust that love will always grow?
In this stillness, we find the truth,
A chance to heal, to reclaim youth.
So let the storm come, let it roar,
I know we’ll stand, we’ll be no more.
Together, we’ll face what’s ahead,
With hope and love, we won’t be led,
By fear or doubt or what could break,
In the quiet, we learn to awake.
