Chapter 48
Indigo called me for dinner. After I got home from the Morgan Group, I took a long nap.
I said what I needed to say to Jessa and Levi. I think I made myself pretty clear.
I'm sure after I left, the two of them talked things through. Maybe we'll have an answer soon.
Levi sat at the dining table, still looking cold and distant.
"Mrs. Morgan is here."
Levi seemed to snap out of it and started eating.
I sat down across from him. It felt a bit too quiet, and then I remembered Celestia wasn't here.
"Indigo, didn't you pick up Celestia?"
"Oh, right, Mrs. Morgan, I was just about to tell you. Mrs. Natalia Morgan picked up Celestia. She said the roses at the estate abroad are in bloom, and Celestia loves roses."
She went abroad?
My heart sank. I never thought Levi's parents would be interested in spending time with kids, since they seemed so used to their life as just the two of them.
Over the years, they rarely came back unless something important came up.
"Oh, I'll contact her later then."
I haven't had much time with my daughter these past few days. Celestia went to the Morgan mansion before, and now she's gone abroad. That feeling of anxiety came back again.
Indigo smiled. "Mr. Morgan just spoke with her on the phone. Celestia is having a great time."
"Oh."
Maybe I'm being too sensitive, but I can't shake the feeling that my daughter is starting to drift away from me again.
Indigo left us to eat, as it wasn't appropriate for her to join us.
Levi and I ate in silence as the day's events replayed in my mind.
"Have you gone for a checkup recently?"
Levi suddenly asked this question, and I almost didn't know how to respond.
"I'm fine now."
I'd actually forgotten about my fracture. Talk about forgetting the pain once the wound heals. On days when Jessa wasn't causing trouble, I didn't even have time to think about these things.
Work kept me busy. Being occupied every day was much better than staying home and overthinking everything.
Though Levi's concern surprised me, it didn't make me happy.
I was still going crazy over his refusal to take a clear position.
"Have you looked at Grandpa's documents?"
"No."
"He's prepared an asset distribution plan. He wants to give you all the property under his name."
Levi said it casually, as if it were nothing important.
But to me, this was way too much. What had I done to deserve Aiden's assets?
Even when I was thinking about divorce, I never considered taking a penny of Levi's property.
"I understand. I'll find time to talk to Grandpa. I won't accept it."
Levi put down his utensils, as if the food in front of him had lost all appeal.
As he got up to leave, I stopped him.
"I'm really struggling right now. You and Jessa are making my life difficult. Ever since she came back, everything has been terrible." I paused before continuing, "I've said this more than once—if you like her, just tell me honestly. I'll let you two be together."
As I spoke, I got worked up again. "I hate being caught in the middle of this mess. Jessa won't stop until she gets what she wants."
Levi's straight back was like a wall, blocking off all his emotions.
"Honestly, you're not being very gracious. You won't give Jessa an answer, but you expect me to suffer through this. Do you enjoy this?"
Suddenly, Levi turned around.
He said quietly, "You were the one who wanted to get married. Now you want a divorce?"
My heart felt like salt had been poured on it—the pain was instant. I didn't expect that when he actually said those words, I wouldn't be able to handle it at all.
"Don't you want a divorce?"
I asked him back. During all the time since Jessa came back, hadn't he thought about divorcing me?
A long silence...
When it came to our relationship, Levi seemed to lose all ability to function. He was like a stone that never echoed back.
"Can we communicate effectively?"
I broke the silence again.
Levi sat back down.
"We've been married for six years. We've always gotten along fine. You don't need to tell outsiders I'm your wife."
"That's the truth."
I laughed bitterly. "Don't you think it's ridiculous? Now you say it's the truth, but why didn't you acknowledge it before?"
Levi looked at his watch. "Are we bringing up old grievances?"
"Have you ever given me a chance to bring them up?"
I was losing control a bit. "Levi, our conversations never go beyond three exchanges. We rarely talk about personal matters."
"Our only connection is Celestia."
"And then what?"
Levi looked confused by my question. I wasn't even sure what I was trying to say anymore.
I was clearly upset, but he remained calm to the point of being infuriating.
Didn't he have any feelings? Couldn't he see how frustrated, stressed, and vulnerable I was?
"You're under too much pressure. If work is exhausting you, then stop working."
I instantly lost all desire to continue this conversation...
The food on the table had gone completely cold, just like my spirits.
"Just tell me—are you getting a divorce or not?"
I closed my eyes, waiting for his answer. I didn't want to beat around the bush anymore. This was pointless.
"No."
Levi dropped those two words and left. This was the first time he'd given a direct answer, and it left me with mixed feelings.
Was he planning to torture me forever?
Staying close to Jessa while refusing to divorce me?
The dining room was eerily quiet. I felt cold all over.
Indigo tiptoed over.
"Mrs. Morgan, you ate so little. Let me reheat this for you."
"No need."
I had no appetite left. Levi had already filled me up with frustration.
"Did you two argue just now?" Indigo came closer. "I didn't mean to eavesdrop, but honestly, you two aren't at the point of divorce."
"You have a lovely daughter together. That alone means no one can compare to you."
"Mr. Morgan might still be conflicted about the past, but over these years, he's seen how great you are."
Indigo tried to comfort me, but I wasn't convinced. Maybe in Levi's mind, not letting go was his "revenge" for what I did years ago.
"Maybe you both need to calm down. Celestia needs a good family environment. The Morgan family has good conditions, but parents not being together would be too cruel for a child."
Indigo had hit on my weak spot—this was my biggest worry.
"I can't accept him having another woman in his heart. It's a matter of principle."
"But this problem didn't just appear now. You knew about Mr. Morgan and Miss Greer's relationship from the start, and you could tolerate it back then."
It was like a wake-up call. This problem existed six years ago and still exists now. It just didn't flare up in between, so I thought it was gone.
If there was a mistake, it wasn't now—it was at the very beginning.
But now that I've realized it, shouldn't I cut my losses?
"Six years is a long time. You and Mr. Morgan worked so hard to get to this point. Mr. Morgan won't give up, will he?"
Won't he give up?
But he loves Jessa...
