Chapter 34 Make-Up Sex
Rafe’s POV
“His injuries are minor…mostly bruising and a mild concussion. Nothing life-threatening,” the doctor's voice cut through my haze of thoughts as he stood in the hospital hallway, clipboard in hand, his voice calm and professional. “For now he’s still unconscious, but stable, we’ll keep him overnight for observation… so you two can go home.”
Relief flooded through me instantly, but it was quickly drowned by exhaustion, guilt, and the heavy weight of everything that had happened.
“Thank you.” I nodded to the doctor and turned away before he could offer any more
reassurances.
“Rafe, wait—”
Shawn called after me the second I began to walk out through the hospital door, his voice rough with exhaustion and something softer I didn’t want to name.
I didn’t stop. My shoes squeaked against the polished marble floor as I walked straight toward the parking lot where Shawn’s car was parked.
My mind couldn't stop reeling from everything that had just happened this night—guilt over the stranger, anger at Shawn, and a dangerous flicker of hope I hated myself for feeling.
“I’m talking to you, Rafe!”
Shawn barked behind me, but it did nothing to make me stop. I reached the car, yanked the passenger door open, and slid into the seat, slamming the door shut behind me.
The driver’s door opened seconds later as Shawn followed inside, sliding into the seat. He didn’t start the engine. Instead, he turned to me, venting immediately.
“You can’t just walk away like that, Rafe. Not after everything that happened tonight. Talk to me, damn it!”
I uttered no words in response, still staring ahead through the windshield, my jaw clenched so tightly that I could hear my teeth shatter.
“What’s so hard to understand that I don’t want to talk to you right now, Shawn!” I snapped back coldly. “Just drive us home. Tomorrow we’ll come back and check on him. That’s it.”
“That’s it?” A bitter, frustrated laughter tears out of Shawn, nothing funny about the sound of it. “So that’s all you have to say? After I almost beat a guy unconscious because of you?”
I turned fully to face him now, my eyes blazing with pure, unfiltered rage.
“Because of me? Are you fucking kidding me right now, Shawn? You’re the one who stormed in there like a jealous lover and started throwing punches! I told you to leave. I told you it was none of your business, but you just want everything to always go your way, don’t you?”
“I was only protecting you!” he shouted, his voice rising to match mine. “You think I’m happy seeing you let some random asshole use you for his pleasure? After everything we’ve been through? After you begged me to fuck you in the bathroom this morning?”
My face burned with humiliation and rage the moment he uttered those words. “Begged? I didn’t beg you for shit tonight. You left me for Avery. You stood there and told her you’d meet her parents like it was the easiest decision in the world. So don’t you dare act like the victim here!”
BAM!
Shawn slammed his hand against the steering wheel, the sound echoing loudly in the small space of the car.
“Why can’t you understand that I chose to make that decision to protect us! To keep our secret from blowing up in front of everyone. But you just couldn’t understand that? Huh? Instead, you ran straight to a stranger you’ve barely known for one week just to make me jealous!”
“I don’t care how it makes you feel!” I snapped, my voice trembling with rage. “You are nobody to try to control me…you have no fucking right to punch people because you’re jealous. You don’t get to decide who I fuck when you’re busy playing the perfect boyfriend!”
For a moment, the car filled with heavy silence, but only for a few seconds. The silence was shattered by Shawn’s heavy breathing as his chest rose and fell angrily.
“You’re mine, Rafe.” He growled, his voice dripping to a low, dangerous whisper that sent chills through me. “Whether you like it or not.”
“Yeah?”
A humourless laughter tore out of me, shaking my head. “Keep telling yourself that…and just maybe one day you’ll actually believe your own li—“
Before I could finish the sentence, Shawn’s hand shot out, cupping the back of my neck with surprising gentleness. He pulled me toward him and crashed his mouth against mine in a hard, desperate kiss.
I gasped into it, shocked by the sudden intensity. But his mouth swallowed every muffled sound that escaped my lips. For several long seconds, I froze, then I kissed him back, my fingers gripping his shirt tightly as if I was afraid he’d disappear.
When he finally pulled away, his forehead rested against mine, and for the first time since I’d known Shawn Calder… I saw something raw and vulnerable in his eyes.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered, his voice cracking with every word. “For leaving you hanging tonight…for…for making you think I didn’t want this.” He swallowed hard, his thumb brushing tenderly over my cheek.
“….but I’m done lying to myself anymore. I’m into men. I’m into you. I want this…whatever the hell this is between us… to continue. I’m craving you so fucking bad right now, Rafe. I miss you. I miss the way you feel under me, I want to fuck you right now.”
Holy shit!
For a moment, I stared at him, stunned at the words that just left his mouth.
Did Shawn just say this to me?
Or am I dreaming?
“Promise me,” Shawn’s voice cut through my thoughts as his eyes searched mine, desperate and painfully sincere. “Promise me you’ll stop whatever you have with that guy. I want you to belong to me…and only me.”
My throat tightened. “What about Avery? How long are you going to keep lying to her?”
“I’ll…” he hesitated for a second, pain flickering across his face before he forced the words out. “I’ll tell her the truth soon…hold on for me. Please. Give us time.”
Those words sparked something deep inside both of us — a mix of relief, longing, and raw hunger.
Before my brain could think twice, I crashed my lips against his, this time with raw hunger. Our hands were gripping each other desperately, as if we were afraid the other might vanish.
I unbuckled my seatbelt and climbed over the center console, settling onto Shawn’s lap and deepening the kiss, sucking on his tongue as my hands roamed over his chest.
A shameless moan tore out of Shawn as he groaned into my mouth, his hands sliding under my shirt to grip my waist possessively, as if marking me.
I pulled back, breaking the kiss just enough to whisper against his lips, my voice filthy and teasing. “You promised to fuck me tonight, remember? So why don’t we do that right now… in the car?”
