Chapter 89
Ava leaned heavily on Dominic as they walked through the front door of their penthouse. The familiar surroundings, once a sanctuary, now felt alien to her. Every shadow seemed to hide a threat, every sound a reminder of her captivity. Her body was marked with bruises and cuts, but the real scars were the ones unseen, buried deep within her mind.
Dominic closed the door behind them, his hand lingering on the handle as he turned to look at Ava. Her eyes were distant, unfocused, as if she were still trapped in that dark place where Alex had tortured her. The warmth of their home did little to thaw the cold fear that had settled in her bones.
“Ava,” he said softly, guiding her to the couch. “Let’s sit down for a bit.”
She nodded mechanically, allowing him to help her sit. The plush cushions enveloped her, but she felt no comfort. Her hands trembled as she folded them in her lap, her eyes darting around the room as if she expected Alex to appear at any moment.
Dominic sat beside her, his heart aching at the sight of her. He reached out, gently taking her hand in his. “You’re safe now,” he whispered, squeezing her hand lightly. “Alex can’t hurt you anymore.”
Ava’s eyes flickered to his, but there was no recognition in them, only a deep, pervasive fear. She swallowed hard, her voice barely a whisper. “I... I know. It’s just... it’s hard to believe it’s over.”
Dominic’s grip tightened slightly, a silent promise of protection. “I’m here for you, Ava. We’ll get through this together.”
She nodded again, but the words felt hollow. The memories of her captivity were too fresh, too vivid. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Alex’s sneering face, heard his taunting voice. The pain of his torture was still with her, echoing in her mind and body.
That night, as they lay in bed, the nightmares began. Ava thrashed and cried out in her sleep, her body convulsing with fear. Dominic woke with a start, his heart pounding as he tried to comfort her. “Ava, wake up,” he urged, gently shaking her shoulder. “It’s just a dream.”
Her eyes flew open, wild and unfocused. For a moment, she didn’t recognize him, her mind still trapped in the nightmare. Then, slowly, reality seeped back in, and she collapsed against him, sobbing uncontrollably.
Dominic held her tightly, his own heart breaking. “It’s okay, I’ve got you,” he murmured, stroking her hair. “You’re safe, Ava. You’re safe.”
The nights were long and filled with terror. Every time she fell asleep, the nightmares returned, dragging her back to that dark place. Dominic did everything he could to comfort her, staying up late into the night, holding her, whispering reassurances. But no matter what he did, the nightmares persisted.
During the day, Ava was a shadow of her former self. She moved through the penthouse like a ghost, her eyes empty and hollow. She barely ate, barely spoke, and when she did, her voice was flat and lifeless. The trauma of her captivity had built a wall between them, a barrier Dominic didn’t know how to break.
He watched helplessly as Ava withdrew further into herself, her once vibrant spirit now dulled by fear and pain. He tried to engage her in conversation, tried to draw her out, but she remained distant, lost in her own world of nightmares and memories.
One afternoon, as they sat in the living room, Dominic reached out, taking her hand in his. “Ava, please talk to me,” he pleaded. “Tell me what you’re feeling.”
She looked at him, her eyes filled with a deep, aching sadness. “I don’t know how to, Dominic,” she said softly. “Everything is so... dark. I feel like I’m drowning, and I don’t know how to come up for air.”
His heart ached at her words, his own helplessness a crushing weight. “We can get through this,” he said, his voice filled with determination. “We’ll find a way, together.”
Ava’s lips trembled as she tried to smile, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “I want to believe that,” she whispered. “But it’s so hard.”
Days turned into weeks, and Ava’s struggle only deepened. She began to avoid Dominic, retreating into the guest room to sleep, her nightmares too painful to share. Dominic respected her need for space, but the emotional distance between them grew, an ever-widening chasm that he feared might never be bridged.
He threw himself into his work, trying to find a way to capture Carlos, to bring some semblance of justice for Ava’s suffering. But even in his moments of focus, his mind always drifted back to her, to the pain etched on her face.
One evening, as he sat in his office, a knock on the door pulled him from his thoughts. It was Mia, her expression serious and concerned.
“How is she?” she asked, taking a seat across from him.
Dominic sighed, rubbing his temples. “Not good. She barely speaks to me, and when she does, it’s like she’s miles away. I don’t know how to help her.”
Mia reached out, placing a comforting hand on his. “She needs time, Dominic. What she went through... it’s going to take a while for her to heal.”
“I know,” he said, his voice strained. “But it’s killing me to see her like this. I feel so helpless.”
Mia squeezed his hand gently. “You’re doing everything you can. Just keep being there for her. She needs to know she’s not alone, even if she can’t see it right now.”
Dominic nodded, grateful for her support. “Thank you, Mia. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
She smiled softly. “You’re stronger than you think, Dominic. And so is Ava. She’ll find her way back to you, I’m sure of it.”
But as the weeks turned into months, the weight of Ava’s trauma continued to bear down on them. The distance between them grew, a silent testament to the horrors she had endured. Dominic felt like he was losing her, slipping away bit by bit, and he didn’t know how to stop it.
One night, as he lay in bed, staring up at the ceiling, he heard a soft knock on the door. He sat up, his heart pounding. “Come in,” he called softly.
The door creaked open, and Ava stood there, her eyes red-rimmed and filled with tears. “Dominic,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I’m so sorry.”
He was out of bed in an instant, crossing the room to pull her into his arms. “Don’t apologize,” he murmured, holding her tightly. “You have nothing to be sorry for.”
She clung to him, her body shaking with sobs. “I don’t know how to get better,” she cried. “I don’t know how to stop the nightmares, the fear. It’s like I’m trapped in my own mind.”
Dominic’s own tears fell as he held her, his heart breaking for her pain. “We’ll figure it out, Ava. We’ll get through this together. I’m not going anywhere.”
She nodded against his chest, her grip on him tightening. “I love you, Dominic. I’m just so scared.”
“I love you too,” he whispered. “And I’m here. Always.”
They stood there for a long time, holding each other, the distance between them finally beginning to close. It was a small step, but it was a step forward, a glimmer of hope in the darkness.
The next day, Ava agreed to start seeing a therapist. It was a difficult decision, but one she knew she needed to make. Dominic supported her every step of the way, attending sessions with her when she needed him, giving her space when she didn’t.
The road to recovery was long and fraught with challenges, but together, they began to navigate it, one step at a time. Dominic’s unwavering support and love became Ava’s anchor, a lifeline that kept her from sinking back into the darkness.
As the weeks passed, the nightmares began to lessen, and Ava started to find moments of peace. The scars of her ordeal would always be with her, but with Dominic by her side, she found the strength to keep moving forward.
Their love, tested by the fires of trauma and fear, emerged stronger than ever. And as they faced the future together, they knew that whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them side by side, their bond unbreakable.
