Chapter 90

Ava sat in the small, warmly lit office of Dr. Harper, her new therapist. The walls were adorned with calming artwork, and the soft hum of a white noise machine provided a sense of privacy and security. Despite the comforting environment, Ava felt a knot of anxiety tighten in her stomach. She glanced at Dominic, who was sitting beside her, his hand resting reassuringly on her knee.

"You can do this," Dominic whispered, his eyes filled with unwavering support. "I'll be right here if you need me."

Ava nodded, her throat dry. "I know," she replied softly, her voice barely audible. "I just... I don't know where to start."

Dr. Harper smiled gently from her chair across the room. She was a middle-aged woman with kind eyes and an air of calm that Ava found both soothing and intimidating. "It's perfectly normal to feel that way, Ava," she said. "We can take this at your own pace. There's no rush."

Ava took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. "Okay," she said, her voice trembling. "I guess... I guess I should start with what happened."

Over the next few sessions, Ava slowly began to open up about her ordeal. Each word felt like pulling a splinter from her skin, painful and raw, but necessary. She spoke about Alex, the torture, the fear that had gripped her every moment of her captivity. Dr. Harper listened patiently, offering gentle guidance and support.

"It was like... like being trapped in a nightmare," Ava said during one session, her voice breaking. "Every day, I wondered if it would be my last. I couldn't see a way out."

Dr. Harper nodded, her expression empathetic. "That sense of helplessness is a common response to trauma, Ava. It's important to acknowledge those feelings and understand that they were a natural reaction to an incredibly difficult situation."

Ava nodded, tears streaming down her face. "I just... I don't know how to move past it. Every time I close my eyes, I see his face. I hear his voice."

"It's going to take time," Dr. Harper said gently. "But you're already taking the first steps by talking about it. You're beginning to reclaim your power, bit by bit."

Dominic watched from his seat, his heart aching for Ava. He felt a profound sense of helplessness, unable to take away her pain. He wanted to do more, to fix everything, but he knew that this was a journey Ava had to take on her own. All he could do was be there for her, offering his unwavering support.

After one particularly difficult session, Ava leaned heavily on Dominic as they walked back to their car. "I don't know if I can do this," she whispered, her voice filled with despair. "It's too hard."

Dominic stopped and turned to her, his hands gently cupping her face. "You can do this, Ava. You're the strongest person I know. And I'm here with you, every step of the way."

Ava's eyes searched his, finding the determination and love she needed to keep going. "Thank you," she said, her voice cracking. "I don't know what I'd do without you."

As the weeks went by, the therapy sessions continued to be a struggle. Ava was forced to confront painful memories and emotions she had tried to bury. Each session left her feeling drained, both physically and emotionally. There were days when she wanted to give up, when the weight of her trauma felt too heavy to bear.

During one session, Ava spoke about a particularly harrowing memory. "There was one night... he said he was going to kill me," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I believed him. I was so sure that I wouldn't make it out alive."

Dr. Harper leaned forward, her expression compassionate. "That fear is a powerful thing, Ava. It's something that can leave deep scars. But it's also important to remember that you're here now. You survived."

Ava nodded, tears spilling down her cheeks. "Sometimes, I don't feel like I survived. It's like a part of me is still back there, in that room."

"It's a process, Ava," Dr. Harper said softly. "Healing takes time. It's okay to feel like this. What's important is that you keep moving forward, even if it's just one small step at a time."

Dominic listened, his heart breaking for Ava. He wished he could take her pain and make it his own, but he knew that all he could do was be there for her, to hold her when she cried, to remind her that she wasn't alone.

One evening, after a particularly grueling session, Ava sat on the couch, her eyes red and swollen from crying. Dominic sat beside her, his arm around her shoulders. "I hate seeing you go through this," he said quietly. "I wish I could make it all go away."

Ava leaned into him, drawing strength from his presence. "I know," she said, her voice trembling. "But I have to do this. I have to face it if I'm ever going to move on."

Dominic pressed a kiss to her forehead, his heart filled with love and admiration for her strength. "And I'll be here, every step of the way," he promised.

As the therapy sessions continued, Ava began to notice small changes. The nightmares, while still present, became less frequent. She found herself able to talk about her experiences without breaking down completely. The fear, though still there, began to loosen its grip on her mind.

One afternoon, as they sat in Dr. Harper's office, Ava spoke about a moment of hope. "There was a time, right before you found me," she said, looking at Dominic. "I thought about you. It gave me the strength to keep going."

Dominic's eyes filled with tears, and he reached for her hand. "You were my strength too, Ava," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "Knowing that I had to find you, that I had to bring you back... it kept me going."

Dr. Harper smiled gently. "That connection, that love, is a powerful thing. It's something that can help you both heal."

Ava nodded, squeezing Dominic's hand. "I know it's going to be a long road," she said. "But I feel like... like maybe there's a light at the end of the tunnel."

Dominic smiled, his heart swelling with pride and love. "There is, Ava. And we'll reach it together."

Despite the progress, there were still setbacks. There were days when Ava felt like she was right back where she started, when the weight of her trauma threatened to overwhelm her. Dominic remained patient, his support unwavering, even when he felt helpless and frustrated.

One evening, after a particularly difficult day, Ava sat on the balcony, looking out at the city lights. Dominic joined her, wrapping a blanket around her shoulders. "Do you want to talk about it?" he asked gently.

Ava shook her head, her eyes filled with tears. "I don't know what to say. Some days, it just feels like too much."

Dominic sat beside her, taking her hand in his. "I know it's hard, Ava. But you're making progress, even if it doesn't feel like it. And I'll be here, no matter what."

Ava leaned her head on his shoulder, drawing comfort from his presence. "Thank you," she whispered. "For everything."
