Chapter 46

Chapter 46
Nyra's POV

I left early, took time off from work with the excuse of an important skin appointment and made sure I was on my way to the hospital around some minutes after noon, exactly when I had booked the appointment. I tried not to be too early or late or dwell on the fact that I might be betraying Fiona by going behind her back to see Ethan.

Nevertheless, he did give me the leverage of seeing him. So, I used it.

The hospital was big enough to be mistaken for a hotel, which made me question just how much progress he had made since he had been here in the human world.

I stepped inside and walked over to the receptionist; the place was filled with people, but one could barely notice since there was someone attending to another.

“Good day," I gave the receptionist a very warm smile, which she returned.

“Good day to you miss”

“Um, well, I have an appointment today with Doctor Ethan.”

I said.

“Really?” Scrolling through the computer for authentication. “What is your name, Miss?”

“Jane”

There was no way Ethan would love to see my name on his list of assigned patients.

“Oh, right Jane”, she turned back to me.

“He wants to see you right now.”

“That's great," I smiled.

“The office is just along this hallway, and then you turn to your right and take the first door you see.”

I nodded.

“Thank you so much.”

“Good, you're welcome.”

I felt pity for the heartwarming humans that worked for him. What an irony that a wolf was their boss.

I found the door, which was not hard to go unnoticed since his name was boldly printed on it. I knocked once before stepping into the office.

Sanderwood everywhere.

He had his back against the door as it seemed like he flipped through the pages of a book he might need.

“Jane Adams," he said as he turned around to meet my eyes. Ethan frowned and was taken aback by my presence. He really did hope not to see me again.

“What are you doing here?” he said firmly, in a calm tone.

I clutched my handbag and took a seat uninvited, which made him arch his brow.

“You said that I would be invited to your hospital anytime.”

I reminded as he walked over to the other end of his huge sanderwood-scented office, he dropped the book on the shelf and started walking back.

“That is not what I said," he resorted.

“Over dinner, I can't remember clearly, but I knew with the way you sounded, I was getting free check-ups." I squinted my eyes at him, but he didn't flinch.

“If that was the case, then you wouldn't have faked your name.”

Now he was seated as well and with a valid point.

“Well,” I started to explain. “I need this to be as discrete as possible…. Something is happening to me and I want a diagnosis.”

“I treat humans, not werewolves. If you need a doctor for whatever you're feeling, I suggest going back to your pack.

This was why I couldn't help but act too tough on him. He was clearly rude and full of himself, I scoffed inwardly. Maybe if I owned a hospital in a human world then I would understand how fast his ego grew.

“Well, that felt dismissive, and towards someone that's going to bless the union between you and Fiona…”

He smirked then scoffed,

“Does Fiona know you're here?”

“Does she know you're a wolf?” I shot back, but Ethan frowned slightly, it was obvious he didn't like that I played around with the word ‘wolf’ or how I said it so casually and how oblivious I was to the possibility that someone might be listening to us.

But he didn't say all that, instead he fixed his expression and shook his head.

“I don't even think you might last here enough to witness any union whatsoever.”

Oh please, I bet this whole hospital didn't take more than a year to build since you are the current owner.

Are all wolves vicious to you?

I've been suppressing my wolf with suppressants. It's been out for more than ten years.

“Well,” I started to say. “Something is happening to me; I need you to figure it out...”

“You want me to do that? How?” he cut in.

“With your witchy power, of course, it's driving me insane and if you feel like you don't owe me anything, then when I'm caught after losing control of this, then I'll drag you down with me as well…. Tell everyone that you are what you are.”

I wanted him to know it was a threat.

“I guess I never really had the choice," he said.

“You didn't," I replied.

There was a small sigh escaping from his lips.

“Look, I really want to get you off my tail. It honestly feels like dating Fiona came with a price.”

I rolled my eyes. “Is that a yes?”

He sighed.

“Come to my lab”, he rose and walked through a door in his office. I stood up as well and hurried after him.

He offered me a chair while searching for pills.

“State your symptoms,” he ordered.

I tried recalling exactly how I felt on the day the pain started. I tried to think of why I had started to feel that way, but I decided to tell him about the office episode first.

“Yesterday I felt really weird, my claws suddenly came out of my teeth, that's never happened to me…. And there's this uncontrollable urge.”

I had shivers just at the thought of it.

“Come with me then," he said after a brief pause of thought.

“To where?” I stood up and attempted to follow behind him.

“Didn't you say I can use my witch spells on you? So, stand up”, his voice was stern, and he seemed in haste.

I gulped as my heart skipped a beat, but the look in his eyes wasn’t just urgency; it was something darker, something that made my wolf stir, a warning that whatever lay beyond that door could either save me… or end me.
