Chapter 34

Chapter 34
Ronan's POV

My curiosity had gotten the better of me that time around as I was following Lucan’s trail. I really wanted to know why he was so concerned about that little pest I had gotten rid of. It would be so hard for me to live with myself if I ended up realizing that I had thrown away such a valuable possession so easily.

But there was only one way to find out and that was having a word with Lucan. I could only hope that he was ready to discuss even after the other alphas had gotten on his nerves.

I really wanted to find out what was going on as it looked like the opportunity I had been waiting for all my life to finally take what was mine. Rowan would surely not know what hit him by the time I was done.

For the first time, I found myself hating the structure of our building as it was keeping me from getting to Lucan on time. So many corridors kept me from reaching the exit and I hoped Lucan hadn't disappeared like he had just appeared into our space.

“Come on…” I exhaled heavily as I was finally outside, and I could catch a glimpse of Lucan and the scared guards around him.

Without hesitation, I ran towards him, hoping that he would be in the mood to discuss for a moment before making his dramatic exit. He didn't look like the kind who liked being interrupted.

“Alpha Lucan…” I made him stop at once as he turned around and looked at me with those eyes that could make anyone melt. But I wasn't just anyone. “I apologize for the interruption.”

I walked carefully towards him as I hoped he didn't mistake me for my brother. That would simply be messed up if he actually did.

“You are his twin brother, aren't you?” Lucan said with no excitement at all, as he was now facing me directly. “What errand did your twin brother send you on?”

That delivered a terrible pinch to my pride, but I was willing to let it slide as long as we were on the same page.

“Unfortunately, this is not an errand from my brother.” I made sure to keep a composed smile on my face as I spoke to him in spite of his intimidating aura. “I came by myself to see you. And I hope you have just a few seconds to spare.”

“I really don't like conversations with people without ranks in their pack. But then I will be lenient because I am in your territory. What do you want?” Lucan’s icy eyes hit me with search intensity that made it feel like he was looking at me for the first time. “I don't have all day so can you be fast about it, kid?”

“Not to pry, I just really wanted to know why you were stressing over the girl. I just wanted to be sure what kind of trouble my brother might be getting himself in.” I was doubtful about my choice of words as that was going to blow my cover instantly as one who was up to something.

Lucan said nothing as he stood staring at me with that case that could make anyone tremble. It looks like he was intentionally trying to create some sort of intimidation, but I wasn't going to let him have his way so easily.

“You know, I have a very great intolerance for people who don't know how to stay out of my business.” Lucan’s reply wasn't encouraging at all. But at least he wasn't ripping out my throat yet. “The only way I can make room for such people is if they make a good contribution to what I'm looking for. So, if you don't have any of that, I would advise you to step out of the way.”

He stepped forward to walk away and that prompted me to make use of my last desperation move available.

“What if I tell you I was one of the last people who saw her?” I made him stop dead in his tracks with that, as I clearly had his attention now. It was hard for me to figure out what the heck I was going to follow up with, but then I was sure I could do something as long as I had this attention. “She was actually here…”

He stopped and looked at me carefully like he was scanning my entire body for any signs of deception. With the calmness I had on the outside, I wasn't sure he would be able to find anything in me.

“If this turns out to be a bluff, I will kill you. Besides nosy people, the other thing I hate the most is people who get my hopes up for nothing.” Lucan was beginning to close the distance between me and him and that made me quite scared. “I did not want to hear who the last person who saw her was. I want the girl right now.”

“But why are you so interested in her?” I just couldn't hold back my curiosity anymore, even though it seemed like it could possibly cost me everything I had been working so hard to achieve in that conversation. “She's a wolfless omega maid from what I know. Why would she interest an Alpha like you?”

“That's none of your business. If you are not going to be helpful in finding her then I think it's about time we ended this conversation.” Lucan was ready to turn around and leave, forcing me to pull out another wild card.

“I do need something in return if I can find her and bring her to you.” I really wasn't sure how I was going to make that happen, but I was ready to do whatever I could to get my hands on the key to my victory.

Too bad I had to go through all of that regal to get to it. But none of it was going to matter when I finally had that artifact.

“You seem ready to play.” Lucan finally smiled and that meant we were in business. “So, tell me, what exactly are you willing to risk for what you want in return?”
