Chapter 33: It Wasn't My First Pregnancy That Got Terminated
Sophie
“I have always loved Romano.”
Just by what I said, it infuriated Nathan so much that he let go of my wrist and gripped my jaw.
“You are out of your fucking mind! Why!” He yelled.
“Why the fuck can't just just accept me!”
“Because Romano is still out there!” I pushed him off me and caught him off guard. He stumbled back, he was now a few steps away from me and then just glared at me.
“If I can't have you then no one else will.” He firmly gripped his gun and pointed it at me.
“No, no, Nathan!” My mother yelled.
“Maria?” He called out.
“Your daughter really asked for this and I must do it. Now you just have to watch what I do in one second.”
My eyes widened as it bounced between them, I gulped so hard that I began to loosen my body because of how frightened I was.
“Nathan, no.. plea…”
A loud gunshot was heard as well as my mother's scream.
It was an excruciating burning sensation I felt in my abdomen a few seconds after the bullet was fired. My mind came to a stop when the bullet came in contact with my skin, my brain switched off and I couldn't hear anything. I looked down at my stomach to feel the hot blood pouring out of my wound, my eyes teared at how much pain I felt. My eyes shifted to my hands and they were covered in nothing but blood. My chest felt very heavy as I was desperate for air, I really couldn't sense anything at all. I hadn't realized how I collapsed to the ground and was now staring at the clouds. The pain was so heavy in one place that the rest of my body felt so numb.
“Sophie!” I opened my eyes only to see my mother in my blurry vision, she was close enough to me. I grabbed her arms and began to groan.
“Oh my gosh, Sophie. Please stay awake, dear. Stay with me, keep your eyes open.”
“M..mother…it hurts.” I began to cry.
“Mother…”
Just as I was able to call out for her again, I lost it. I blinked a couple times until darkness took over my vision.
I looked up to see the most beautiful smile I have ever seen in my entire life, the echoes of our voice spread through the field as we sat on the grass right by each other. I closed my eyes when he kissed me like I was his and my heart fluttered crazily in my chest. I know I was in love, so much love.
'I love you, Sophie.’
My lips stopped moving against his as I registered his exact words into my brain. I have never heard them leave his lips before and to hear it now really caught me off guard. I pulled away from him and stared right at him as I licked my lips.
'What?’ I whispered.
Romano let go of my hand and sat back before he sighed.
'It is true, I love you, Sophie. I love you like how I have never loved anyone in my life before.’
I furrowed my brows as my fingers grazed his lips, he turned his eyes back at me and watched me with a tender look. I lightly shook my head and bit my lips.
'Romano, that is not true. You have loved this much before in your life. You are just overwhelmed.’ I said as I pecked his lips.
'No, Sophie. I am speaking the truth, I feel like I have a different connection with you and it is a connection I actually can't live without. The thought of being away from you intimidates me because I don't want to face the idea of being alone. I want to wake up everyday to you, to hold you and kiss you and tell you how much I love you for the rest of life.’
My lips were firmly sealed as I watched this man tell me something I have never known but honestly, it was the sweetest thing I have ever heard. My heart flutter as I feel my lips just frowning because I knew I was going to cry but it was all happy tears. I watched him for a couple of seconds before I wrapped my arms around him. He fell backwards so I was laying on his chest while my arms were still locked around his neck.
'Oh my goodness, Romano.” I shuttered.
'I..I love you too.’ he chuckled as he wrapped his arms around me and planted a kiss on my head. I snuggled deep next to his chest and closed my eyes, I can be here all day.
'That was the kindest thing you have ever said to me.’
'Of course, I do truly love you.’
I smiled widely against his chest and hummed as I closed my eyes and began to picture a future that I imagined to have with him. It is going to be perfect, it will always be perfect.
'Everyday that goes by, it is like a dream.’ I murmured as my face was buried into his chest.
'Yes, a dream come true.’ he replied.
'For a short time.’
My smile faded and my brows furrowed.
'Which is why you have to wake up now.’
I furrowed my brows against his chest as I began to realize what he was talking about.. I feel the drop in my stomach when I sit up from his chest.
'W..what?’
'Wake up, it is time for you to wake up.. to the real world.’ he replied with a tender smile.
'What? What is the real world? No..’
“Wake up, Sophie!” I started hearing voices from a distance.
“Please, wake up, Sophie.” The voice pierced through my ears again.
My body stiffened as a rock, I felt the agonizing pain slowly making its way through my body as I regained consciousness. I opened my eyes to be welcomed with the right amount of light just entering the room. From the corner of my eyes, I was able to see my mother sitting beside the bed with his head resting on it. I reached for her head and stroked it.
“Mother,” I croaked out.
She sat up quickly as her tired eyes began to roam around the bed, however, once they landed on me, a huge smile spread across her lips as she began to cry.
“Oh my, thank goodness you are awake.” She said as she grabbed my hand and kissed it.
“I thought I lost you,” she cried out.
I closed my eyes and tried to sit up with her help, I groaned a little and pulled away from her.
“I am fine, mother. Everything is going to be alright.” I growled in frustration.
Instantly, I regretted it because it was not her fault that I feel like this, I feel as if I have been beaten until I am unable to feel my legs. So now, I feel useless. The thought of putting everything at risk was so overwhelming yet traumatic. I needed a lot of time to get my head around what happened, anything could have happened. A lot happened and I was ready to face the things I have lost.
“Nothing is alright, Sophie, because your baby…” she said.
“It is gone.” She sobbed on top of me while on the other hand laid still on the bed. My body was stiff as a rock and my face hardened.
I felt myself quiver on the bed as I blinked away the tears that spread out on my eyes. I felt nothing because I was so numb yet again, I couldn't find the word to say about this situation, I felt so guilty. I felt guilty because I knew it would come to something like this yet I did nothing about it. I let it happen and now, I have lost something that should have been so precious to me.
“He killed your child, Sophie. That monster took it all away.” I blinked once again and turned to my mother who was completely distraught.
“It wasn't my first pregnancy that was terminated.” I blurted out.
“What?”
I glanced down at my fingers as they were tangled, avoiding her perplexed glare at all cost because truth be told, I couldn't face her right now. I couldn't face her for so many reasons and one of the few was that I didn't tell her anything when I should have.
“Sophie?” She called out with a stern voice. I flinched and looked up at her as she cleaned her jaws and flared her nostrils.
“What does that mean?” Her voice was much deeper and demanding.
My heart hammered against my chest, I was going to tell her something I didn't tell her when she was supposed to be the first one to know. I was also scared at the disappointment she might portray because I was a bit young at the time that I thought this would work.
