Chapter 11: Family Tensions

Eliza sat in the backseat of her father’s SUV, her eyes fixed on the rolling hills that lined the highway. They were en route to the family cabin, a rustic getaway nestled deep in the woods, where the outside world seemed to fall away. It was supposed to be a peaceful, relaxing weekend, but Eliza’s stomach twisted with anxiety. She wasn’t sure how she was going to get through this trip, especially with Alex sitting in the front seat, close but distant, both physically and emotionally.

Her father was behind the wheel, humming to the tune of a song playing softly on the radio. Sarah, her stepmother, sat beside him, flipping through a magazine. From the outside, everything seemed normal, even serene, but Eliza felt anything but. Her thoughts were a tangled mess, caught between her confusing feelings for Alex and the persistent pull of her connection to Professor James.

She glanced at Alex from the corner of her eye. His face was illuminated by the glow of his phone as he scrolled through messages or maybe some social media feed. He hadn’t said much since they left the city, and the silence between them was deafening. It was strange, how close they had been just days ago, and yet now, there was an invisible wall between them. A tension she couldn’t quite name but felt deeply.

“Eliza, honey, how’s school going?” Sarah’s voice cut through the quiet, pulling Eliza from her thoughts.

She turned to her stepmother, forcing a smile. “It’s fine. Just, you know, busy.”

Sarah nodded, her eyes kind but probing. “You’ve seemed a little distracted lately. Is everything okay?”

Eliza’s heart skipped a beat, but she quickly nodded. “Yeah, everything’s fine.”

She could feel Alex’s gaze shift in her direction for a brief moment before he returned his attention to his phone. The knot in her stomach tightened. Did he sense it too? The awkwardness between them had grown since their last movie night, when their easy closeness had started to feel complicated. Eliza wasn’t sure if it was just in her head or if Alex was feeling it too.

The cabin appeared in the distance, a familiar sight that should have brought comfort. Instead, Eliza felt a wave of uncertainty. She wasn’t sure how she was going to survive an entire weekend with Alex, not with these confusing emotions swirling inside her.

As they pulled up the long gravel driveway, the cabin came into full view, its wooden structure blending seamlessly with the surrounding trees. Eliza climbed out of the car and stretched, the crisp mountain air filling her lungs. The sky was a deep shade of blue, and the golden autumn leaves crunched underfoot as she walked toward the porch.

“Come on, El. Grab your stuff,” Alex called from behind her, his voice casual, but it sent a jolt through her.

She turned to see him already unloading their bags from the trunk. His familiar, easygoing smile was gone, replaced with something more guarded. Eliza forced herself to walk over, her hands trembling slightly as she grabbed her duffel bag.

“Thanks,” she mumbled, avoiding his eyes.

“Yeah,” he replied, his tone clipped.

They made their way inside the cabin, where her father and Sarah were already unpacking groceries and settling into the kitchen. The place was cozy, with its warm wooden walls and stone fireplace, but the tension in the air was palpable.

“I’ll take the room upstairs,” Alex said, his voice carrying an edge that Eliza wasn’t used to.

“I’ll be in the one down the hall,” Eliza replied, her voice quieter than usual.

They split off in different directions, and Eliza felt a strange mix of relief and regret. She needed space, time to think. Maybe this weekend would give her the distance she needed to sort through her feelings, to figure out why things with Alex suddenly felt so confusing.

After settling into her room, Eliza found herself standing at the window, looking out at the dense forest that surrounded the cabin. The trees swayed gently in the breeze, and for a brief moment, she allowed herself to relax. But then her phone buzzed in her pocket.

She pulled it out and saw a message from Professor James. Her heart leaped in her chest.

Professor James: Hope you're enjoying your weekend, Eliza. Your last essay was exceptional. Keep up the great work.

Eliza’s breath caught. She knew it was a simple, professional message, but the praise felt loaded. Her fingers hovered over the screen as she debated whether or not to respond. Part of her wanted to reply immediately, to keep that connection alive. But another part of her—the part that was haunted by Sarah’s warning—knew that this was dangerous.

Before she could decide, there was a knock at her door. Alex stood in the doorway, his expression unreadable.

“Can we talk?” he asked, his voice low.

Eliza’s heart skipped a beat. She nodded and gestured for him to come in. He closed the door behind him, leaning against it for a moment before crossing the room to sit on the edge of the bed. Eliza sat down beside him, the tension between them heavy and uncomfortable.

“What’s going on with you?” Alex asked, his voice soft but insistent. “You’ve been… different.”

Eliza swallowed hard, her throat tightening. She didn’t know how to explain what she was feeling, didn’t know how to make sense of it herself. “I don’t know,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “Everything just feels… complicated.”

“Complicated how?” Alex’s eyes searched her face, his expression filled with concern. “Is it me?”

Eliza felt her heart race. Was it him? Or was it her? She didn’t even know anymore. She shook her head, unable to meet his gaze. “It’s not just you,” she said softly. “It’s everything.”

Alex was quiet for a moment, his gaze lingering on her. Then he sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I don’t want things to be weird between us, El. We’ve always been close. But lately… it feels like there’s this wall between us.”

Eliza’s chest tightened. He was right. There was a wall, but it wasn’t just between them—it was inside her, a barrier she didn’t know how to break down. “I don’t want things to be weird either,” she said, her voice shaky.

“Then talk to me,” Alex urged, his eyes pleading. “What’s going on? Why are you pulling away?”

Eliza closed her eyes, her mind spinning. She wanted to tell him everything, to explain the confusion she felt, the emotions she couldn’t untangle. But how could she admit that part of her was drawn to him in a way that wasn’t entirely appropriate? How could she explain the strange, intense connection she felt with Professor James, a man she knew she shouldn’t be thinking about like this?

“I don’t know how to explain it,” she whispered, her voice breaking.

Alex reached out, his hand brushing against hers. The touch was warm, familiar, and it made her heart ache. “Eliza,” he said softly, his voice filled with concern. “You know I’m always here for you, right?”

Eliza opened her eyes, meeting his gaze. She saw the sincerity in his eyes, the care, and it made her feel even worse. She didn’t deserve his kindness, not when her feelings were such a mess.

“I know,” she whispered, her throat tight with emotion. “I just… I need some time to figure things out.”

Alex nodded, though the hurt in his eyes was unmistakable. He stood, his movements slow and deliberate. “Okay,” he said quietly. “Take all the time you need. Just… don’t shut me out completely, okay?”

Eliza nodded, her heart heavy with guilt and confusion. She watched as he left the room, closing the door softly behind him. As soon as he was gone, she collapsed onto the bed, burying her face in her hands.

How had things gotten so complicated? How had she let herself get caught between two impossible situations?

She knew she couldn’t keep running from her feelings forever. Sooner or later, she would have to confront them. She just wasn’t sure how much longer she could keep juggling everything without breaking.
