Chapter 12: Caught Staring

The afternoon sun filtered through the trees, casting dappled light across the cabin’s front porch where Eliza sat, her eyes following Alex as he worked at the edge of the yard. He was chopping wood for the fireplace, his movements strong and rhythmic, each strike of the axe echoing through the clearing. She wasn’t even sure how long she’d been watching him, mesmerized by the ease with which he moved, the way his muscles tensed with each swing. It was a mundane task, but to her, there was something captivating about it.

She felt a pang of guilt but couldn’t tear her eyes away. Everything about this trip had been stirring up emotions she didn’t understand, and her feelings for Alex were at the center of it all. What had once been a comfortable, sibling-like bond now felt charged with something else—something confusing and inappropriate. Eliza found herself analyzing every glance, every touch, as if searching for signs that he felt the same confusing pull she did.

Just as she was lost in thought, a voice broke through her reverie.

“Eliza.”

She startled, her heart lurching in her chest. Sarah was standing at the door to the porch, her arms crossed and a knowing look on her face. Eliza quickly turned her gaze away from Alex, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. Had Sarah seen her staring?

Sarah stepped forward, her footsteps soft against the wooden floorboards as she moved to sit beside Eliza on the porch swing. The air between them felt thick with unspoken tension. Eliza tried to act casual, focusing her eyes anywhere but where Alex stood, though she could still hear the steady rhythm of the axe hitting the wood.

“You’ve been awfully quiet this weekend,” Sarah said after a long pause. Her tone was light, but there was an edge to it—something pointed, as if she knew exactly what had been on Eliza’s mind.

Eliza swallowed, forcing a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “Just… thinking, I guess.”

Sarah leaned back, her eyes scanning Eliza’s face. “Thinking or watching?”

Eliza froze, her stomach twisting with guilt. She didn’t know how to respond, but Sarah’s gaze didn’t waver, and the silence stretched on for what felt like an eternity. Finally, Eliza let out a shaky breath, dropping her gaze to her hands. “It’s not what you think.”

Sarah raised an eyebrow, her lips curving into a sad smile. “Isn’t it?”

Eliza’s heart raced. How could she explain the knot of confusion inside her, the way her feelings for Alex had shifted in a way that terrified her? She could feel Sarah’s eyes on her, patient but unyielding, waiting for her to admit something Eliza wasn’t even sure she understood herself.

“Sarah, it’s complicated,” Eliza whispered, her voice barely audible. “I don’t know what’s going on with me.”

Sarah’s expression softened, but there was still a hint of concern in her eyes. She leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees as she looked out toward Alex, who was still focused on his task, unaware of the conversation happening on the porch.

“Eliza,” Sarah began, her voice gentle but firm, “I’m not here to judge you. I know things can get… messy when it comes to family, especially with step-siblings. But you need to be careful.” She paused, her eyes meeting Eliza’s. “You need to think about boundaries. For your sake and for Alex’s.”

Eliza felt her heart sink at the word boundaries. She knew Sarah was right—she knew she was treading dangerous ground. But the feelings stirring inside her didn’t feel like something she could control. “I don’t want things to be weird between us,” she admitted, her voice strained. “I don’t even know why I’m feeling this way. It’s like everything changed all of a sudden, and I don’t know how to make it stop.”

Sarah sighed, leaning back again and studying Eliza with a look of empathy. “Feelings don’t always make sense, especially when it comes to family dynamics. But Eliza, you have to ask yourself if what you’re feeling is real, or if it’s just the closeness, the familiarity of being around someone like Alex. Sometimes, we confuse affection or comfort for something more.”

Eliza blinked back the sting of tears that threatened to well up. She wasn’t sure if Sarah was right or if her emotions were real, but either way, the weight of them was suffocating. “What if I can’t figure it out?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper. “What if I ruin everything?”

Sarah’s face softened, her eyes filled with concern. “You won’t ruin everything. But you need to be honest with yourself about what you want and whether it’s worth risking the relationships you have. And you have to talk to Alex—about whatever it is that’s between you two.”

Eliza’s stomach churned at the thought of confronting Alex, of admitting how conflicted she felt. “I can’t. I don’t even know what to say to him.”

Sarah gave her a sympathetic smile, reaching out to place a gentle hand on Eliza’s arm. “I know it feels impossible right now, but you can’t avoid it forever. If you don’t address it, it’s only going to get more complicated.”

Eliza nodded, her throat tight with unshed tears. “I just don’t want to lose him,” she said quietly.

“You won’t,” Sarah assured her. “But if you don’t set some boundaries, you might end up in a situation that hurts both of you.”

Eliza looked down at her hands, her mind racing. She knew Sarah was right, but the idea of pulling back from Alex, of keeping her distance, felt like an impossible task. How could she just switch off these emotions when they seemed to take over every time she was near him?

Before Eliza could respond, the sound of Alex’s footsteps approaching made her heart leap. He appeared at the bottom of the porch steps, wiping the sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand. He glanced up at the two of them, his usual easygoing smile faltering when he saw the serious expressions on their faces.

“Everything okay?” he asked, his tone cautious.

Sarah gave him a small smile, though there was a knowing look in her eyes. “We were just having a little chat. Eliza and I don’t get enough time to talk these days.”

Eliza forced a smile, her heart pounding in her chest. “Yeah, just catching up.”

Alex’s gaze flickered between them, a hint of suspicion crossing his face, but he didn’t press the issue. Instead, he leaned against the porch railing, his eyes resting on Eliza for a moment longer than usual. The silence that settled between them was thick with unspoken words, with everything Eliza wanted to say but couldn’t find the courage to.

Sarah stood up, brushing off her jeans. “I’ll leave you two to it,” she said, her voice light but her eyes serious as she glanced at Eliza one last time. “Remember what we talked about, okay?”

Eliza nodded, her throat too tight to speak. Sarah gave her a small, encouraging smile before heading inside, leaving Eliza and Alex alone on the porch.

Alex watched her go, then turned to Eliza, a frown creasing his brow. “What was that about?”

Eliza swallowed hard, her heart racing. She knew this was her chance to say something, to address the tension that had been building between them, but the words felt stuck in her throat. She looked at him, her emotions swirling in a confusing mix of affection, guilt, and something she wasn’t ready to name.

“Just… stuff,” she said lamely, avoiding his gaze.

Alex didn’t seem convinced, but he didn’t push. Instead, he sat down beside her, the weight of his presence making her pulse quicken. “You’ve been weird lately,” he said after a long pause, his voice soft but direct. “Did I do something wrong?”

Eliza’s heart twisted. She shook her head quickly. “No, it’s not you. It’s me. I’m just… I don’t know. I’m confused.”

Alex’s frown deepened, concern flickering in his eyes. “Confused about what?”

Eliza opened her mouth to speak but found herself at a loss for words. How could she explain the mess of emotions inside her, the way her feelings for him had shifted in ways she couldn’t control? Instead, she just shook her head again, her chest tight with the weight of everything left unsaid.

Alex sighed, running a hand through his hair. “El, you know you can talk to me, right? About anything.”

Eliza bit her lip, her eyes stinging with unshed tears. She wanted to tell him everything, but she wasn’t ready. Not yet. Instead, she nodded, her voice barely above a whisper. “I know. I just… I need some time.”

Alex studied her for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Finally, he nodded, though the worry in his eyes remained. “Okay. Take whatever time you need. I’ll be here when you’re ready.”

Eliza nodded, grateful for his understanding, even though it only made her feel worse. As they sat there in silence, the tension between them unspoken but palpable, Eliza couldn’t help but wonder if things would ever go back to the way they were—or if she had already crossed a line she couldn’t uncross.
