Chapter Seventy-Four – The Ember’s Whisper

Chapter Seventy-Four – The Ember’s Whisper
Arthur’s world shattered the instant her eyes turned gold.

Angelica writhed in his arms, silver fire sparking and twisting with streaks of molten gold. Her scream tore through the camp, a sound so raw that wolves stumbled back in terror, their ears pressed flat.

“Angelica!” Arthur’s voice cracked, desperate. He clutched her tighter, his shadow wrapping around her trembling form. “Stay with me. Don’t you dare leave me now.”

But when her lips parted, the voice that spilled out wasn’t hers.

“You can clutch her as tightly as you want,” Seraphine hissed, her words slipping like smoke. “But I am already inside. She burns with me. She breathes with me. She is mine.”

Arthur’s chest split with rage. His claws dug into the earth, his wolf snarling. “No. She is not yours. She will never be yours. She is mine and I am hers.”

For a heartbeat, silver flickered in her eyes, fighting the gold. Her voice slipped through, faint and shaking. Arthur…

His breath hitched. He pressed his forehead to hers, his tears falling hot. I’m here, love. Hold on. Always.

The gold blazed brighter, drowning her voice. Seraphine’s laughter echoed. “Always is nothing. Always burns. Always dies.”

Arthur roared, his shadow flaring, his love and fear surging like a tide. “Not ours , Ours endures because she chose me and I chose her,  every breath,  every scar always.”

The bond-space tore open around them, dragging Arthur inside again.

Silver threads snapped and twisted, golden cracks splitting through their weave. Angelica’s form was bound in fire, her wolf snarling but shackled by golden chains.

Arthur staggered forward, his amber eyes blazing. “Let her go.”

Seraphine’s golden wolf loomed, claws sunk deep into Angelica’s chest, fire pouring through her veins. “Why should I? She carries me willingly now. I am part of her. I am the ember she cannot quench.”

Arthur’s heart lurched. He dropped to his knees before Angelica, cupping her face, ignoring the searing heat. “Look at me, Angelica. Not her. Me.”

Her silver eyes flickered faint under the gold, her voice trembling. Arthur I can’t she’s too strong.

His voice broke. Then lean on me. Take everything I have left. Take me. Burn me if you must, but don’t give her an inch.

Her tears slipped, sizzling in the golden fire. You’ll burn out.

Then I burn with you. Always.

Seraphine snarled, her claws digging deeper. “Pathetic. You think vows make you strong? Love is a shackle. Love is how I break you.”

Arthur’s fury surged. He pulled Angelica against his chest, his shadow wrapping her, his voice raw. “No. Love is how we survive you. Love is how we burn brighter than you ever can.”

Silver fire burst from Angelica’s heart, colliding with Arthur’s shadow, twining tighter. The chains cracked, sparks flying. Angelica gasped, her voice cutting through Seraphine’s roar. Always!

The blaze surged, searing through the golden chains, forcing Seraphine back.

She screamed, her golden form cracking. But even as she staggered, she hissed, “I will not leave. I am etched into her. Into you. Kill me, and you kill her too.”

Arthur froze, his chest heaving. His hands trembled against Angelica’s skin.

Her silver eyes lifted to his, wet but fierce. “Then don’t kill her. Outshine her. Burn brighter than she ever could.”

Arthur’s throat closed. He kissed her, desperate, pouring everything into it every fear, every vow, every shred of love. Their wolves howled as one, silver and black storming together, consuming the cracks.

Seraphine shrieked, her body dissolving into smoke but her voice lingered, a whisper. You cannot erase me. I am the scar you carry. I am the ember you cannot smother.

The void snapped shut.

Arthur gasped awake, his arms still around Angelica’s trembling body. Her silver eyes blinked open, wet with tears, her chest heaving.

“Arthur…” she whispered.

He clutched her closer, burying his face in her neck, his voice breaking. “Gods, I thought I’d lost you again.”

Her hand tangled in his hair, weak but sure. “You won’t lose me. Not while you keep calling me back.”

He pulled back, searching her eyes. They were silver again  but deep within, faint golden sparks flickered.

Arthur’s stomach twisted. “She’s still there.”

Angelica’s smile wavered, her lips trembling. “I know.”

The camp had fallen silent around them. Wolves watched with wide eyes, their bodies tense, their whispers sharp.

“She still carries it.”
“The gold lingers.”
“What if she turns?”

Arthur bared his teeth, snarling. “Say another word against her, and you’ll regret it.”

But Angelica touched his arm, her voice soft but steady. “Let them fear. We’ll prove ourselves again. As many times as it takes.”

He looked at her, his chest aching at her strength even when she trembled. “You shouldn’t have to keep proving yourself.”

Her silver eyes met his fierceness. “Maybe not. But I will. Because I choose us.”

That night, when the camp quieted, Arthur lay awake with her in his arms. His thumb stroked circles over her knuckles, his heart thundering. He wanted to believe the danger was over, but every faint flicker of gold in her fire made his wolf bristle.

Angelica stirred, her voice soft. “You’re still awake.”

He kissed her hair. “I’m afraid to sleep. Afraid she’ll take you while I close my eyes.”

Her hand pressed weakly to his chest. “Then don’t fear. Because I’ll be here when you wake. Always.”

His tears slipped, silent. He kissed her temple, whispering against her skin, “Always.”

But deep in the bond, the ember pulsed once  faint, quiet. Waiting.
