Chapter Seventy-Three – Scars That Glow
Chapter Seventy-Three – Scars That Glow
The dawn came gray and heavy.
Ash clung to the cliffs, blood darkened the stone, and the air stank of smoke and grief. Wolves moved slowly across the battlefield, dragging the dead to be mourned, tending wounds with low murmurs and bowed heads.
But Arthur saw none of it.
He only saw her.
Angelica lay cradled in his lap, her silver hair tangled, her face pale, her breath shallow but steady. His fingers never stopped moving brushing strands from her cheek, tracing the curve of her jaw, gripping her hand so tight his knuckles burned.
Every time her chest rose, his lungs eased. Every time it fell, his heart clenched in terror.
She stirred faintly, her lashes trembling. “Arthur?”
His voice cracked. “I’m here.”
Her eyes fluttered open, silver soft but clouded with exhaustion. She blinked up at him, then tried to smile. “You look like you haven’t breathed all night.”
He laughed, broken and wet. “I haven’t. Not until you opened your eyes again.”
Around them, the packs whispered.
“She survived.”
“The bond held.”
“Or something else holds them now…”
Arthur ignored them. Let them murmur. Let them wonder. Their awe, their fear, their questions none of it mattered. Only she mattered.
He pressed his forehead to hers, his voice low so no one else could hear. “You scared me worse than any battle, Angelica. I thought I’d lost you in that void.”
Her hand twitched weakly, finding his cheek. “You didn’t lose me. You called me back. Always.”
He closed his eyes, kissing her palm, letting the word anchor him. “Always.”
By midday, the wounded were gathered in tents, the dead honored with flames. The Stonefang Alpha approached, his expression carved from stone.
“You fought like no wolf has ever fought,” he said, his voice carrying. “The packs have seen you burn, and they will not forget it. But they whisper of the gold. They whisper of corruption.”
Arthur bared his teeth, his arms tightening around Angelica. “They whisper because they’re afraid. She saved them. And if they can’t see that, they’re fools.”
But Angelica’s voice, soft and raw, broke through. “Let them whisper. Fear will fade. Time will show them I am theirs as much as I am yours.”
The Alpha studied her, then bowed his head. “Then let time be your weapon.”
When he left, Arthur kissed her hair, whispering fiercely, “You don’t owe them anything.”
Her eyes closed, her voice faint. “Maybe not. But I owe myself peace. And fear is a heavy chain unless I break it.”
He held her tighter, aching at the strength in her even when she trembled.
That night, when the camp quieted and the fires burned low, Arthur finally let his mask slip.
He curled against her, his arms wrapped tight, his forehead pressed to her shoulder. His voice was hoarse, almost a whisper.
“I was so afraid,” he confessed. “When she had you, when your eyes glowed gold. I thought I’d already lost you. And I… I don’t know who I am without you anymore.”
Angelica’s eyes opened, tears slipping down her cheeks. She turned, cupping his face in her shaking hands. “Arthur”
He shook his head, his words tumbling raw. “I know I should be strong. I should be steady for you. But gods, I’m terrified of waking up one day and finding you gone. I’ve lost too much already. If I lose you, I won’t survive it.”
Her heart cracked. She pulled him closer, kissing his temple, whispering fiercely. “Arthur, listen to me. You are not weak for needing me. And I am not leaving you. Even if the bond shatters, even if the world burns I will find you again. Always.”
His tears soaked her skin. “Always?”
She smiled through her own tears. “Always.”
But later, when his breathing finally slowed into uneasy rest, Angelica lay awake.
Inside her chest, beneath the silver fire of her wolf, a faint golden ember pulsed. Quiet. Subtle. But present.
Every beat of her heart brushed against it, every breath stirred its glow. She closed her eyes, shivering and faintly she heard it.
You cannot keep me buried forever.
Her breath hitched, her body stiffening. She turned her head, staring at Arthur’s sleeping face, his features soft despite exhaustion, his hand still gripping hers even in sleep.
Her tears welled. She wanted to wake him, wanted to whisper what she felt. But he’d finally found rest, and she couldn’t steal it from him.
So she held the secret in her chest, trembling, whispering to herself, “Always.”
By dawn, her strength returned enough to stand. Arthur hovered at her side, every step she took shadowed by his steady presence. Wolves bowed as she passed, some out of respect, some out of fear. She carried herself tall despite the ache in her bones, her hand never leaving Arthur’s.
But inside, the ember pulsed. Each beat is a reminder.
Arthur noticed the way her fingers trembled in his. The way her smile faltered when no one was looking. He said nothing, but his wolf growled low, sensing what she would not say.
That night, when he pulled her into his arms again, his amber eyes searched hers, sharp and tender. “There’s something you’re not telling me.”
Her lips parted but before she could answer, pain ripped through her chest.
She gasped, convulsing, her body arching, silver fire sparking violently. Arthur caught her, panic flooding his veins. “Angelica!”
Her eyes snapped open and for a heartbeat, they glowed gold.
Seraphine’s laughter whispered faint through her lips. Did you think you were free? Did you think love alone could cage me? I am in her now, in you both and I am patient.
Arthur roared, clutching her tighter, his wolf rising, his voice breaking. “You’ll never take her from me. Never!”
Angelica’s silver fire surged, clashing against the gold, her scream ripping through the night.
