Chapter Seventy-Two – The Wolf She Cannot Break
Chapter Seventy-Two – The Wolf She Cannot Break
Arthur’s arms locked around Angelica as her body convulsed, silver fire sparking wildly against a sudden golden blaze. Her eyes burned bright, not the soft silver he knew, but molten gold, cruel and cold.
When she spoke, it wasn’t her voice.
“You cannot cage me,” Seraphine hissed, her words pouring through Angelica’s lips. “You burned me, but I live. I live in her. I live in you. I am the fire you cannot quench.”
Arthur’s heart split. His wolf raged, his hands trembling as he cupped Angelica’s face. “No. You don’t live in her. She is not yours, she is mine.”
Her body thrashed, her claws scraping the ground. Silver fire clashed against the gold, flaring and sparking, the air thick with heat. Wolves in the distance cried out, pulling back, their fear ringing through the night.
Arthur didn’t let go. Couldn’t. His shadow surged, wrapping around her, his voice pouring through the bond, fierce and trembling. Angelica, hear me. Fight her. Come back to me.
For a moment, the gold flickered. Her lips parted, and faintly faintly her voice slipped through. Arthur…
He gasped, clutching her tighter. Yes, love. Hold on. I’m right here. Always.
But Seraphine’s laughter ripped through, cruel and sharp. “She cannot hear you. She is drowning. And when she falls, she falls with me.”
Arthur snarled, pressing his forehead to Angelica’s, his tears spilling hot. “No. I won’t let you take her. I don’t care if I burn with her. You will not have her.”
The bond-space tore open around them again.
Arthur was pulled inside, dragged into the silver-black threads, but they weren’t steady anymore; they were shredded, glowing with golden cracks, sparks flying in every direction.
Angelica was there, her form tangled in light and shadow, her body writhing as gold fire snaked around her limbs. Her silver wolf thrashed, snarling, but the golden chains held tight.
Seraphine towered behind her, her golden wolf blazing, her claws sunk deep into the threads. “Look at her,” she sneered. “Even now, she bends beneath me.”
Arthur’s chest heaved, fury and fear flooding him. He moved forward, shadow surging, but Seraphine’s fire lashed out, searing his skin, throwing him back.
Angelica cried out, her voice hoarse. Arthur don’t.
He staggered, but his amber eyes never left hers. “Don’t tell me not to fight for you. I will fight until my last breath. You are mine, Angelica. And I am yours.”
Her silver eyes flickered, faint through the gold strangling her. Always…
Seraphine snarled, pressing harder, her claws tearing deeper into the bond. “Pathetic. You cling to words like they are weapons. But love cannot save you. Love makes you weak.”
Arthur straightened, his shadow rising tall, his voice breaking but sharp. “Then let me be weak. Let me bleed. Because weakness with her is stronger than eternity without her.”
He threw himself forward, his wolf howling, shadow wrapping Angelica. Golden fire burned his skin, tore at his bones, but he didn’t care. He pressed his arms around her, pulling her into his chest, shielding her with every shred of himself.
Seraphine shrieked, her fire flaring. “You will both fall”
Arthur’s voice thundered through the void, raw and unyielding. Then we fall together. Always.
Silver fire burst from Angelica’s chest, answering him. Their wolves twined, fire and shadow merging, burning against the golden chains.
Angelica gasped, her eyes snapping open, silver light blazing through the gold. Her voice roared with his, fierce and raw. Always!
The chains shattered.
The bond-space erupted.
Silver and black stormed together, ripping through Seraphine’s golden blaze. She screamed, her claws ripped from the threads, her wolf staggering back. Cracks split across her fire, pieces breaking, shattering into sparks.
Arthur and Angelica stood together, their hands clasped, their wolves pressed as one, the blaze around them brighter than anything the void had ever held.
Seraphine snarled, her body trembling, her voice sharp. “You think you’ve won? You think this ends here? I will never leave you. I am in the cracks, in the scars, in the blood you spill. Every shadow will carry me. Every flame will echo me.”
Her golden wolf dissolved, vanishing into the void with a final shriek.
Silence followed.
Angelica collapsed, her fire dimming. Arthur caught her instantly, his arms wrapping her tight. He pressed his forehead to hers, sobbing into her skin.
“You came back to me,” he whispered, shaking. “Gods, Angelica, I thought I’d lost you.”
Her eyes fluttered open, silver again, soft and wet. “I heard you. Even in the dark, I heard you. You never stopped calling me home.”
He kissed her, desperate and trembling, pouring every ounce of love into it. “And I never will. Always.”
Her lips curved faintly. “Always.”
When the void dissolved, they were back on the battlefield, collapsed together on the stone. Wolves stood in silence, watching, some trembling, some whispering, none daring to step forward.
Arthur pulled her closer, glaring at them all, his voice rough. “She is alive. She is ours. And no one touches her but me.”
The packs bowed their heads, not in fear, but in reverence. They had seen the fire, the shadow, the bond that even Seraphine could not break.
But Arthur didn’t care about them. His world was only her.
Angelica breathed against his chest, her fire faint but steady, her silver eyes soft as they lifted to him. “We’re still here.”
He kissed her temple, whispering, “And as long as you’re breathing, love, that’s enough for me.”
But deep inside the bond, in the cracks left behind, a faint golden ember pulsed, quiet, Waiting.
