Chapter 121 Chapter 121
Chapter 121 Chapter 121
For days, I kept following every wanted poster of Daisy that I could see. The more I searched, the more the need to find her increased. Judging by the posters, I was sure she was somewhere around, I just need to find out where. On the fourth day after I saw the first poster, I resumed driving around, following the trail of posters until I arrived at poster number thirty.
The poster was on a mailbox in front of a small, homely looking apartment and a man reading a newspaper was sitting on the porch. His eyes started following me from the moment I parked my car and climbed out of it. As if reading my mind, his eyes traveled to the mailbox then back to me and I could see the curiosity in them. I could tell that the mailbox was his, but I went ahead to rip the poster from it anyway. He jumped to his feet immediately after that happened.
"Hey!"
I threw a glance in his direction then I decided to ignore him and walked back to my car. Then, on second thought, I turned back and approached the front of the house. As I did that, I found myself staring down the barrel of a gun. "Don't move any closer," he warned, aiming the gun at my heart.
Holding my hands up defensively, I said, “I just want to talk. I have a few questions to ask you about this." I raised the hand holding the poster higher than the other one. "I can assure you that I mean no harm. Please."
The man didn't look convinced and he said, “ask your questions but remain where you're standing.”
That was all I needed.
I held the poster in both hands and stretched it so he could see it clearly from where he was standing. “Have you seen this woman?" I asked him.
"No, I haven't," he answered immediately. “Is that all?”
“Are you sure? Take a closer look," I urged, taking three steps forward. He cocked his gun immediately.
"Step back!" I said, "step back!"
As much as a part of me would have loved to disarm him and let him know that his gun couldn't protect him against me, I decided to let him have the power instead and do as he said. "Please, I just need to find her."
"She's a criminal. She's wanted by the cops," the man fired at me.
"No, she's not. It's probably just a misunderstanding,” I replied.
“Sure. Whatever. You can take your leave now. I have nothing to tell you,” the man said, gesturing his gun towards my car. Realizing that I was wasting my time there, I lowered my arms slowly, turned around and returned to my car. The man's eyes followed me until I couldn't see him anymore, his gun still aimed at my car.
Four days without making any progress, I decided I'd had enough. None of the people I'd talked to were able to give me any useful information concerning Daisy's whereabouts and they all seemed convinced that she'd committed the crimes she was wanted for. That was something I still didn't want to believe.
After asking a few more people I decided that I needed to take a break. Fuck Daisy for making me have to go through this amount of stress because I was looking for her.
I kept my eyes out as I was driving and when I spotted a bar down the road, I slowed down until I came to a stop in front of it. The bar was a big one and it had two bouncers mounted at the front. They barely acknowledged me as I made my way in and once I was inside the bar, soft music hit my ears. It was way different from anything you would expect to hear inside a bar that looked like that. The place was half-filled and the bartender was engaged in a conversation with another man at the counter.
He looked up at me as I approached and when I got to the counter, I sat on the stool in front of it and placed my hands over it. The conversation between the two men stopped immediately.
"What would you like to drink, sir?” The bartender asked, gliding over to my front.
My eyes scanned the collection of drinks behind him for a few seconds before I pointed to a bottle of tequila. "Mix it with club soda, if you have that," I instructed him as his eyes followed my finger.
"Of course, we do," he replied proudly before moving to grab the bottle. A shot glass miraculously appeared in his and he placed it beside the bottle. As he was mixing the drink, I could feel a pair of eyes on me and I turned my head sideways to see the man the bartender had been in conversation with staring at me. He had a strange look in his eyes and at first, I thought he might have a grudge with me or something.
"Is there a problem?" I asked him, raising an eyebrow.
He shook his head slowly and in a low drawl, he said, “not at all. I only think you look familiar but I'm not so sure." “I'm sure I'm not. You have me confused with someone else," I stated and turned my attention back to the mixture the bartender had placed in front of me. Everything was dumped into my throat in two seconds.
Stretching my hand out to him, I said, "give me the whole bottle."
"What?" The bartender asked, looking perplexed as he stared at the bottle in his hand before returning his gaze to my face.
"Give me the damn bottle,” I said and lunged at him but he stepped backward swiftly and I missed. Due to his sudden movement, his hand collided with the edge of the shelf where the drinks were stacked and the bottle dropped to the floor, shattering on impact.
He flashed me a look of irritation before bending down to attend to the broken bottle. While he was doing that, I heard fast approaching footsteps and a door opened and a man suddenly appeared next to the counter.
The first thing that caught his attention was the bartender crouched on the floor and the sound of pieces of broken glass scraping on the floor.
“Oh, for fuck's sake,” the man said, slamming his palm on the counter in anger. "Could you do without breaking anything for one day?"
The bartender returned to full height immediately. "It wasn't my fault," he protested in anger. "This man here—” “Save it,” the man cut him off. “Clean that shit up and come to my office. You're always giving me reason to believe that Daisy's stay was worth it. I'm starting to believe that she's far more efficient than you can ever be.”
My hand froze with the shot glass on my lips as I heard that. The man had disappeared behind the door he'd appeared from before I could process what he'd said.
Daisy had worked here? What a surprise!
