Chapter 27
Chapter 28
Lila's POV.
“What's going on?” I jump up in panic at the screams echoing as Isabella barges into my room frantically.
“We're under attack! Rogues. They've come for us.” She cries, and my heart falls to the pit of my stomach.
No. No, no!
'I don't feel so good.' Neela says to me, and I groan, crouching over at the wave of heat that hits my abdomen.
A maid had just left about a minute ago, running off to go tell Kael that I had gone into heat.
And now Isabella was bursting in here with this news?
“Where's the alpha? Where's Alec? What's happening outside?” I gasp, my legs threatening to give out as I lean against the bed's wood for support.
She locks the door shut behind her, hurrying over to my side.
“You don't look good. You need herbs and a cold bath, something to help with your heat.” She tries to help me to sit, but I shake my head.
How could I rest when we were under attack?
“I can't do that, Isabella– I have to go outside; try helping some way. I can manage with the heat.” I try to convince her.
On cue, another wave hits me, and I'm forced to sit down on the bed as my wolf and I cry out in pain.
My body craved physical contact with my mate– the pick between my fated mate and husband felt hard.
I just knew for sure that I needed hands on me– whatever it took to ease the pain – it didn't matter whether it would be Kael or Alec at this point.
“There's guards stationed outside your door. The Alpha would definitely have my head if I let you out into danger.” She places a soothing hand on my back.
“The females, elderly, and the pups are already being rushed into the heavily guarded bunkers… I have to hurry now and join them.” Her voice is shaky, hands trembling as she gives me a small smile.
Goosebumps painted my skin, my throat feeling terribly parched as every gulp of saliva felt like a tear.
Would we survive this?
The rogues had attacked earlier than predicted and caught us all off guard.
What if they hadn't been prepared enough?
“Please be safe; you don't want anything to happen to you.” I state sincerely, my voice heavy with nerves.
“Thank you, Luna. I trust our warriors; they're very capable.” With one last reassuring squeeze of my hand, Isabella hurries out, and I lock the door once more.
'We have to pull ourselves together; we can't stay here and not do anything.' I say to Neela as I try to be strong.
'Please bear with me; let's try to be strong for each other." She agrees as I struggle to walk over to the shower.
I'd definitely feel better after a cold shower– then, I'd find my way out of the room.
The guards stationed outside weren't my problem– I wasn't bothered they'd be affected by the pull of my heat and loss of control.
But I knew for sure they wouldn't let me leave following Kael's instructions.
Once I'm done with my shower, I quickly change into something casual, feeling much better.
As I glance around my room, my eyes fall on my window, and my mind begins to work.
I had to get out of here– there must've been a reason why I had seen all those in my dreams that day.
With my mind made up, I quietly push open the window and slip outside stealthily.
The moon casts a hazy glow around the dark grounds, crickets, and other little insects making sounds around.
The air smelt metallic, horrific screams cutting through the usually quiet night sky.
Cries and wails sent chills down my spine, my whole body trembling with nerves as I tried to sneak my way unseen, conscious in case I ran into anyone– worse– the enemy rogues.
As I take the next corner, walking along the walks to stay under the cover of the night– pain– something is rammed against the back of my head.
I groan, lifting my hand to the back of my head, feeling the liquid there– blood.
My world blurs. Once. Twice. I stagger, trying to grip onto anything for support.
“Who– why–” I feel myself hit the ground before I can try to get a look at who has just hit me.
And then everything goes blank.
KAEL'S POV
“We're losing countless warriors.” I growl as my beta states the obvious for the hundredth time now.
My wolf howls as mind links of more casualties come in.
We hadn't been prepared enough.
So many warriors were dropping dead on the front line– the rogues had come fully prepared.
The women, elderly, and children had all been moved safely to the bunkers.
Now all that stood between the rogues and complete destruction of my pack were the warriors and I.
I snarl, heading back to the battlefront, leaving the strategising to Alec as I shift into my wolf mid-run.
'We can't let them win,' my wolf growls, and I couldn't agree more as I tear through the first rogue that steps in my way.
Red. All I see is red as I rip him apart, limb by limb– blood splattering across the already blood-soaked battlefield.
The last time rogues had attacked– I had lost so much– myself and a much bigger part of my life I could never regain.
Now, a lot more was at stake– Lila– a good number of pack members relying on me. I couldn't let them down.
“Alpha”. My beta's mind link cuts through my focus, and I channel my thoughts to listen to what he has to say.
“It's the Luna–” he hesitates, and dread settles in my chest. Whatever he was going to say next couldn't be good– I just knew it.
“We went to check in on her at her room– she's gone.”
