Chapter 26

Chapter 29
LILA'S POV

“Someone get her to the doctor.” Kael speaks up, referring to Josephine.

She's immediately rushed away, and I can swear she has a small smirk on her face.

“Follow me.” He doesn't wait for me as he turns and begins to storm off.

“What happened? I apologise for leaving you alone; I didn't realise that she would –” Isabella, who had returned, tries to apologise, but I cut her off.

She didn't have anything to apologise for; it wasn't her fault, and neither was it mine.

Josephine was just acting crazy.

It didn't matter if no one had been around to witness it all because I knew that I was innocent.

“You don't need to be sorry; everything will be fine.” I state confidently, giving her a smile before hurrying off after Kael.

We get to his office, and he waits for me to go in first before following and slamming the door shut, locking us in.

“Why?” He throws at me immediately.

I frown, confused, not knowing what to say.

Why what? I didn't do anything!

“Don't give me that look like you don't know what I'm talking about! I'm trying my best, Lila; I'm giving it my all, and yet, you continue to make it hard for me!” He screams at me, and I flinch at the volume of his voice.

“I didn't do anything! She cut herself.” I reply, my voice rising too.

“Don't push me to the wall, Lila. Just because you're my wife doesn't mean you get to disrespect me! I'm still your alpha!” He snaps back.

“There's no reason as to why Josephine would do something like that. I'm going to forgive this time, assuming that this is some aftereffect of what happened to you the other day… Leave.” And then he dismisses me like that was it.

Tears brimming in my eyes in disbelief and heartbreak at his action, I storm out of his office, slamming the door loudly behind me.

If he wasn't going to give me the chance to explain myself, I wasn't going to bother.

I return to my room, my appetite lost for the day and wanting nothing more but to just sleep my annoyance off.

My body was beginning to feel warmer than ever, and Neela had gotten even more restless.

My heat was fast approaching, as I had gotten more emotional and snappy these past days.

I step into my room to see a surprise in the form of a food tray waiting for me.

A small piece of paper was placed on it, and it was read.

'I noticed you didn't have breakfast; enjoy…" It was signed 'Kael'; he must've sent this before the whole knife situation with Josephine.

My tummy grumbles at the pleasant aromas.

I might be angry at Kael, but I was too hungry to say no to food.

And so I settle down, appetite regained, and finish the contents of the tray before going to bed.

KAEL'S POV

I ran away from Lila's room like a coward because staying a second longer would escalate things.

What if she couldn't survive too, like the others, and died?

The thought alone killed me, and so I left her room to go busy myself with something else until Josephine's screams got to me.

Lila's mood being off and the sudden outbursts were expected with the coming heat; she just wasn't willing to accept it.

I didn't believe she'd cut Josephine just like that; it may have been an unexpected reaction caused by her heat.

I still had many things to figure out about my wife.

And that's why I had paid the pack's seer a visit in secret yesterday without telling either Kael or Lila.

I had gone to meet him for answers as to why my wife was suddenly having premonitions and if it was indeed going to come through.

He had confirmed that the rogues would indeed attack in the stipulated number of days, and we were to prepare very well, as many lives would be lost.

He couldn't provide answers to Lila's situation, though, claiming that the moon goddess hadn't permitted him to see to that extent yet.

“Have the guards that have been specially trained to retain self-control while protecting a female in heat move to Lila's wing.” I instruct my beta, sending him off.

We had a particular group of guards that specialised in that area.

Staying away from a she-wolf in heat was a battle, and if one couldn't control oneself enough, it could lead to an illicit affair.

I, too, was going to try staying away from Lila for the next few days because I still stood by the thought that she wasn't ready to be marked yet.

A few days have gone by, and the tension around the pack has gotten heavier.

With the D-Day of the rogue's attack just around the corner, everyone was on alert and edge.

I hadn't seen much of Lila, which, inasmuch as it made my wolf unhappy and bugged me, was for the best.

The more I had her around, the less I'd focus on the trouble ahead.

“How prepared are the warriors?” I ask Alec, who has been unavailable mostly these days.

“They're ready.” He replies curtly.

“Have the bonkers prepared for the women and the children to be protected in.” I say to him, and he looks up at me, eyes darkening.

“And what about Lila? Where will she be while the attack goes on? Why have you refused her from leaving her room?” He growls at me, anger evident in his body posture.

“That's none of your concern –” I'm interrupted halfway as my beta rushes into the office.

“They're here!” He announces, and we don't have to ask who, telling from the panic in his eyes and his wolf just at the surface.

He was talking about the rogues.

“Alert the warriors—” Alec begins to speak only to have another person barge into the office once more, looking more panicked than my beta was.

“Lila! Alpha Kael, Lila has gone into heat." Isabella is panting and sweating from probably running here.

Not only have the rogues pounced in on my pack, but now my wife has gone into heat at the same moment?
