Chapter 39 Chapter 39: Did It Work?
Leila Ryker's POV:

"You have to do exactly what I'm doing," Klay said as he took another step closer to me.

I wanted to take another step back at this point, but I chose not to. I wanted to try to figure out how to get this over and done with. If this was the only way to do that, then so be it.

"All right, fine," I said as I raised my hands up to my sides and spread my fingers, just as Klay had done already.

"Very good, now you have to place your hands against mine," Klay said in that instance as I turned my head slightly to the side and gave him a disapproving look. "It's not gonna work, and less we're touching each other."

"Fine," I said in a bit of a grumpy tone as I took another step closer and placed my fingers right against Klay's.

Just as our palms came in contact, I could feel the heat radiating from his hands directly into mine. It was almost electric in a way, which I couldn't help but feel whenever I pulled my hands back upon feeling that right in that moment. Klay narrowed his eyes at me when I withdrew my hands.

"What?" I asked him in that moment as I took a step closer to him and again placed my hands against his.

The feeling was something... It was unique, I have to say.

"Very good," Klay complimented me in that moment as I narrowed my eyes at him before looking at him in a normal manner.

"Now what?" I asked him once again.

"You have to close your eyes," Klay said as he took a step closer, and our toes were almost touching at this point.

Our hands were now out to the sides and almost flat in line with my shoulders.

"Are you going to try to kiss me again?" I asked Klay in that moment, which caused him to pull his head back slightly in shock.

"Well..." Klay said as he broke eye contact for the first time before looking back at me. "That was what I was going to say we had to do next."

"Are you serious?" I asked him without withdrawing my hands this time.

"How else are we going to be able to break the bond?" Klay asked me in return. "I already know you don't like it that I have the ability to read your thoughts."

I swallowed hard at that statement he made. I looked down, not realizing I was looking at his chest as I thought about what he had just said. He was right. He did have the ability to read my thoughts. He called it a bond. A bond that I had no idea how to explain.

"Then let's do it," I told him in that moment.

I could feel it as Klay moved his torso closer to my body. I could feel the heat radiating from his close and in through my work shirt. As he moved closer, he closed his eyes, but I made sure to keep mine open.

I looked at his dark brown hair. How it lightly fell over to the side and partly covered his forehead. I looked at the way his ears were positioned on the sides of his head. I looked at how his nose looked. His jaw looked fierce and yet relaxed at the same time. Then my eyes focused on his lips.

The first time I kissed him, it was a mere accident. Plain and simple. He caught me in the locker room, and we spun until I landed on top of his chest.

"You have to come the last 10%," Klay spoke up, cutting into my thoughts in that moment.

"Oh," I said as his eyes were still closed.

Our hands were still touching, and he was just as patient. At first I thought him to be arrogant and uncaring. But as time passed, that arrogance seemed to wash away. I could see his more caring side. He did come to my rescue outside the Copper Café that one evening that lowlife tried to jump me.

"I'm still waiting," Klay said right then.

"All right... all right," I told him as I continued to look at his lips.

I positioned my head closer as I closed my eyes, recalling exactly where his face was positioned in front of mine. I slowly leaned forward until our lips touched.

When the sensitive skin on my lips came in contact with his, it was like a magnet that pulled me closer. If it weren't for the fact that my hands were pressed hard up against Klay's, I would've guessed that he would've wrapped his arms around me in that moment just to pull me even closer than I already was.

He turned his head slightly to the side as I turned my head in the opposite direction. I felt the electricity between us, but nothing had happened. Nothing happened other than that.

Was I missing something?

He finally broke the kiss, pulling his head back and opening his eyes, causing me to do the same.

"Did it work?" I couldn't help but ask as I took a step back, pulling my hands away from his.

He seemed a bit reluctant whenever I pulled my hands away, but I placed my hands in front of my chest, crossing my arms. I swallowed as I waited for his response.

"I'm not sure," Klay said in that moment. Try to think about something?"

"Like what, to be exact?" I asked as I narrowed my eyes at him.

"I don't know," Klay spoke up as he turned to look away.

In the distance, there was a small group of individuals playing with a Frisbee.

"Here, let's try this," Klay said, turning back to face me as he pointed with one hand toward the group playing their game. "Think about them. Say something within your mind and let me see if I can hear it."

"Ummm... Okay," I said as I turned to face the group off in the distance.

I tried to think about what I would say about them.

'Well, I do seem to be a bit far,' I thought to myself within my own head, and then I turned to look at Klay as he looked directly at me. Briefly before he looked back at them.

Then, Klay spoke when he asked, They're not all that far if you think about it."

Suddenly, the both of us looked at each other with a serious look.

"You heard that?" I asked with intensity.

Klay actually looked visually defeated, drooping his shoulders as he looked back at me.

"I guess it didn't work," Klay said as I reached down and picked up my bag.

I pulled out my phone and realized that I needed to get to work so that I wasn't late.

"Guess we'll just have to try to come up with something else," I said as I started to walk off past him.

"Hey, where are you going?" Klay called after me.

"I have to get to work, remember," I told him before walking off completely.
