Chapter 16
Chapter 16
Logan's pov
I rushed into my uncle's office with a sense of urgency. I learned that Don Jack had one way or the other gotten involved with George Conners, and I knew this would be a serious threat against our family business and reputation.
"Logan, what's going on?" My uncle, Marcus King, asked after looking up from the papers and putting a question mark on his face.
Taking a deep breath, I started the story, "I just found out that George Conners is involved with Don Jack," I said. "I have no idea what they're planning, but I've got this feeling it is not good for our family."
Marcus's expression turned serious, and his eyes narrowed. "That's not good," he said. "Don Jack is a ruthless businessman, and if he's got anything to do with George Conners, they are probably planning some big stuff."
I nodded ambiguously. "I know," I said. "That's why I came to you to find out what they're planning and stop it before it's too late."
Marcus's nod had a serious face. "I agree," he said. "Let's put our heads together on this. I'll start making some calls, seeing if I can dig up any information on what George Conners and Don Jack are planning."
And I nodded. Relief spread over me, for I knew that with my uncle on the case we would surely get to the bottom of this in no time and would save everything our family stood for.
Leaving my uncle's office, I couldn't shake the sense of foreboding that surrounded me. What were George Conners and Don Jack planning? And how could we stop them before it became too late?
I intended to do my own digging at least to find out what these two were up to. So I got my first step-a few calls, talking to people in the business community who might have some think of what was going on.
The more I spoke with people, the more a disturbing image began to form. On the face of it, George Conners and Don Jack seemed to be planning a very extensive business deal that might potentially put them in control of a great chunk of the economy in the city.
I was overwhelmed with a sense of anger and concern. Was it really possible that George Conners and Don Jack were that selfish, reckless not to care about the effect of their actions on the city and its people?
Something needed to be done; George Conners and Don Jack had to be stopped before things were too far gone. I was heading back to my uncle's office to tell him what I had discovered and figure out a plan to stop George Conners and Don Jack.
As I walked into my uncle's office, I saw that he was already busy on the phone with someone, talking in low urgent tones. So I had to wait until he was done to see him free. My mind raced with what we could do to stop George Conners and Don Jack.
Finally, my uncle hung up the phone and turned to me. "Logan, I've got some bad news," he said. "I just got a call from one of my sources, and it seems that George Conners and Don Jack are planning to make their move soon. We need to act fast if we're going to stop them.”
I walked into the coffee shop, scanning the room for Brianna. It had been weeks since I tried to get close to her, and now I would finally make progress.
She was sitting alone at a corner table, sipping a latte. I walked toward her, feeling a little confident and charming.
"Brianna, mind if I join you?" I asked, flashing her a smile.
She looked up at me, a hint of surprise in her eyes. "Logan, I didn't expect to see you here," she said.
I sat across from her, my heart pumping with anxiety and anticipation."It's exactly what I should tell you," I replied. "But I'm glad to see you. How have you been?"
Brianna shrugged, drinking a little of her latte. "Okay, I think. Busy and just focusing on my own things, that's all."
I nodded; it felt like he was somehow related to the way I understood him. "I know it, yeah," I said. "It's as if the world is moving, and you are holding back to keep pace."
Brianna looked at me, a small surprise floating in her eyes between us. "You're really perceptive, Logan," she said. "I kind of didn't expect that from you."
It came as a smile of pride and satisfaction: "Yes, there's so much more to this person than meets the eye, Brianna," I said. "It's all not just the rich playboy end of the spectrum, who doesn't care about anything happening outside of himself."
Brianna looked at me, a hint of curiosity in her eyes. "I'm starting to realize that," she said. "You're not as one-dimensional as I thought you were."
Excitement pooled somewhere in my chest knowing I'm finally starting to break through to Brianna. I leant closer to her, feeling as though we were cocooned in intimacy.
"It's nice to know that you're coming to see me differently, Brianna," I told her. "But I have to say, I really am enjoying getting to know you better. You are razor sharp, funny, and beautiful. What more could a guy ask for?"
"I think you're charmingly said, Logan," Brianna looked at me, the hint of a smile hanging at the edge of her lips. "But I'm not sure if I can trust you yet."
That made sense to me as well. "I can't blame you, Brianna," I said. "I messed up a long time ago, and I'm ready to do anything and everything to make it right. May I ask you something?"
Brianna just nodded that she was curious about me. "What is it?" she asked.
Feeling nervous and expectant, I let out a good breath.I put my question across, "Want to go out with me sometimes? Maybe dinner or a movie-I promise to be at my best."
Brianna gave me a look with a little smile. "I would like that very much, Logan," she said. "However, don't think for a second that I'll drop my defenses around you. I'm still watching you, and I'm still waiting to see if you're really the man you say you are."
I could grin as I felt excitement building in the mind. "Wouldn't want it any other way, Brianna," I said. "I'm looking forward to proving myself to you.”
