Chapter Eighty-Two: The Weight of Hope
The war room was suffocating. Maps and screens covered every surface, but no one was really looking at them.
Everyone looked exhausted, crushed under the weight of everything falling apart.
Fiona burst through the door, her face pale as milk. "The attacks in the city have gotten worse. Three more incidents since last night. More creatures, stronger ones."
She paused, swallowing hard. "People are dying. A lot of people."
Grants slammed his fist on the table so hard the screens flickered. "Then we have to defeat Baki now before this spirals completely out of control." His teeth were clenched so tight his jaw hurt.
Prince let out a hollow laugh, sinking into a chair like all his bones had turned to water. "How? Tell me. How are we supposed to do that?"
He gestured vaguely toward the hallway…toward the room where Aiden floated in his glass prison, dying by inches.
"My best friend is down there. Critical. Aldrich can't even think straight because his mate is fading away upstairs, and Baki? Baki is stronger now. He has Aiden's power and has that giant golem."
Prince's voice cracked. "This seems impossible. It is impossible."
Grants stood up straight. His jaw was set, his eyes blazing with something Prince hadn't seen in days…determination. "Then we try anyway."
"TRY WHAT?" Prince shot back at his lover, frustration and fear making his voice sharp.
"We've been leaning on Aldrich and Aiden for so long we forgot how to stand on our own! Look at us, Grants! We're lost without them!"
"Then it's time we remembered ." Grants' voice was firm, cutting through the tension like a blade.
"We've put too much on them for too long. Aldrich has carried this pack on his back. Aiden has saved us more times than I can count. Now it's our turn."
He looked around the room..at Fiona, at Merrick, at Prince. His eyes didn't beg but they demanded instead.
"We plan. We find a way and we do this ourselves if we have to."
Merrick nodded slowly, pushing off the wall he'd been leaning on.
"He's right. Aiden's down there fighting for his life and his baby. The least we can do is handle the monster while he's busy."
He paused. "We owe him that much."
Fiona pulled out a chair and sat, her expression hardening into something fierce. "Then let's plan."
Aldrich hadn't moved from his spot on the floor in what felt like years. His hand was still pressed to the glass, his forehead resting against the cool surface.
He looked broken and crushed under the weight of worry and something worse…guilt.
Inside the cylinder, Aiden's eyes fluttered open. It took everything he had just to turn his head, but he did it.
Slowly, painfully and when he found Aldrich, a small smile touched his pale, cracked lips.
"You're still here," Aiden whispered. The speaker carried his voice, thin and fragile like paper.
Aldrich looked up. His eyes were red and swollen. He hadn't slept. Hadn't eaten.
"I'm not leaving," he said, his voice hoarse. "I'm never leaving."
"You have to." Aiden's voice was barely there, a whisper of a whisper.
"The baby... we have to bring the baby early. Elliot said... two weeks. Maybe less."
Aldrich shook his head slowly. "I know. I know, and I'm terrified."
Aiden's eyes searched his face, and even through the glass and the golden liquid, Aldrich felt seen. "Have you been eating?"
Aldrich blinked. He genuinely looked confused, like the question made no sense. "What?"
"Eating. Sleeping." Aiden's smile grew, just a little. It was weak, but it was real. "Taking care of yourself. You look worse than I do."
A broken laugh escaped Aldrich, wet and painful. "You're floating in a glass tube, fighting for your life, and you're worried about me?"
"Always." Aiden's hand pressed harder against the glass. "I'm always worried about you."
Aldrich leaned closer, his forehead pressing harder against the barrier between them. His voice cracked open. "I failed you. I promised to protect you, and I let that monster…"
"Stop." Aiden's voice was soft but firm. It still carried weight, even now. "You didn't fail me. You came for me. You always come for me."
He paused, his eyes drifting for a moment as exhaustion pulled at him. Then they focused again, locking onto Aldrich's.
"You should know by now... I've always been strong. Stronger than I look."
"I know." Aldrich's tears dripped onto the floor, silent and endless. "I know you are."
Aiden tilted his head slightly. "So shouldn't you be figuring out how to defeat Baki? Instead of sitting here watching me sleep?"
Aldrich's jaw tightened. The fire sparked in his chest again. "I will destroy him. I swear it. For what he did to you and for what he tried to take from us."
Aiden's eyes softened. "Good. That's my Alpha."
A long pause lingered in the air. Then, quieter: "I'm so tired, Aldrich. All the time now. So tired and so weak."
His hand drifted to his stomach, to the small swell that held their child. "Even hearing the Alpha Prime... it's hard now. His voice is so far away."
A tear slid from his eye, disappearing into the golden liquid.
"But I guess... I'll be seeing our baby soon. That's something, right?"
Aldrich pressed his forehead harder against the glass. "You'll see our baby. And then you'll HOLD our baby. And then you'll come back to me. All of you."
His voice broke completely. "Promise me."
Aiden's eyes fluttered closed, exhaustion finally pulling him under but his lips moved one more time, forming words that Aldrich would hold onto forever.
"I promise... to love my baby... with everything I have left..."
Three days later, the war room was alive with strategy. Not desperate scrambling….real, solid planning.
Fiona pointed at a holographic map of Mount Obsidian, her finger tracing glowing lines.
"The Seer and I have been working on this nonstop. The mountain has weak points…places where the magical barrier is thinner.”
“If we can breach here and here simultaneously, we can create a diversion while the main team goes straight for Baki."
The Seer nodded, her ancient eyes gleaming with knowledge. "The Baki draws power from the volcano itself. Cut him off from the mountain, and he weakens. But doing so requires precision timing and…"
"And a lot of magic," Grants finished. "Which we barely have. Barely."
Aldrich stood at the head of the table, arms crossed. He looked better than he had…more focused, more present.
Aiden's words had done something to him. Rebuilt something broken.
"Aiden told me to fight," he said quietly. Everyone stopped to listen.
"He told me to stop sitting by his glass and do what I was born to do. So that's what I'm going to do."
He looked up, and there was fire in his eyes again. Real fire. The fire that made him Alpha.
"We end this. For him. For my child. For everyone those monsters have hurt."
Elliot raised a hand from the corner, looking nervous but steady. "I'll stay behind. Obviously. The machine needs constant monitoring, and if anything goes wrong with Aiden…"
"You stay." Aldrich's voice was firm, leaving no room for argument. "You keep him alive. That's your mission. The most important one."
Gabriella stepped forward, River pressed close to her side. "We'll help Elliot. Aiden won't be alone."
River nodded, his young face serious beyond his years. "I'll protect him too. I promise."
Aldrich crouched down to River's level, looking the boy in the eyes. "I know you will. You're stronger than you know, little dragon."
He stood and faced the team, his voice rising with command. "We leave at dawn. Dragons will get us there faster. We hit hard, we hit fast, and we come back."
"Together," Fiona added softly.
"Together," they all echoed.
The flight to Mount Obsidian was short but tense. The dragons landed silently at the mountain's base, and the team moved toward the entrance….the same archway where Aldrich had fought the Sentinel what felt like a lifetime ago.
This time, there was no guardian. Just an open, waiting darkness that seemed to breathe.
"This feels wrong," Merrick muttered, his eyes scanning the shadows. "Too easy."
"Stay sharp," Aldrich commanded, his sword already in hand. "We don't know what's waiting."
They descended into the tunnels. The heat grew with every step, until sweat dripped down their faces and the air itself felt heavy.
Finally, they reached the massive cavern.
The Primordial Forge.
And there stood Baki, waiting for them like he'd known they were coming. A terrible smile stretched his cracked, glowing face.
Behind him, the giant golem loomed. Its one open eye fixed on them with hungry recognition, pulsing with that sickly silver-gold light…Aiden's light that has been stolen.
"You came back," Baki crooned, his voice like grinding stone. "How predictable. How FOOLISH."
Grants stepped forward, magic crackling at his fingertips. "We're not leaving without your head, rock-face."
Baki laughed, the sound echoing off the cavern walls and rattling in their chests.
"Brave little flames. But where is your Moon Child? Where is the light that burns so bright?"
He pretended to look around, a mockery of searching. "Oh, that's right. He's dying and soon, so will you."
Aldrich's sword blazed to life…still carrying the echo of Aiden's fire, still burning with the love that fueled it. "We'll see."
Far away, in the mansion, chaos erupted.
Aiden's eyes snapped open inside the glass cylinder.
But they weren't his normal eyes anymore.
They were white. Blazing white, like the heart of a star, like something ancient and powerful had finally woken up.
The golden liquid around him churned and boiled. The machines monitoring his vitals screamed, lights flashing red, alarms blaring so loud they hurt.
Gabriella ran to Elliot, grabbing his arm. "WHAT'S HAPPENING?! WHAT'S WRONG WITH HIM?!"
Elliot stared at the readings, his hands flying across controls that did absolutely nothing. "I DON'T KNOW! The readings are off the scale! His energy levels just…they spiked! They're higher than they've ever been!"
River pressed his face against the glass, watching Aiden's body tremble. "Is he okay? IS HE OKAY?!" Tears streamed down the boy's face.
Aiden's lips moved. No sound came through the glass, no words reached their ears.
But his eyes…those burning, blazing WHITE eyes…were fixed on something none of them could see. Something far away. Something that needed him.
Deep in the darkness of Mount Obsidian, Aldrich suddenly stopped.
His hand went to his chest. His heart was pounding, but not from fear. It was something else. Something he couldn't explain.
Then…
A bright WHITE light suddenly appeared beside him.
It blazed out of nowhere, so bright everyone had to shield their eyes.
So bright it pushed back the cavern's darkness…So bright it carried warmth…Aiden's warmth.
And when it faded, someone was standing there.
Someone who shouldn't have been able to stand at all.
